Timing Belt Tips On A 2006 Lexus RX330 And On All Cars

Фильм және анимация

This is a general tip on doing timing belts. I do this on all timing belts I install to make sure they are on right.
This video was made as a demonstration how to repair things and should not be done with out the proper training and safety equipment. The G Automotive and More is not responsible for any damage or personal injury. Please if you don't have the ability to do these demonstrations, don't try and get a professional to do it for you.

    Every car is different. I try to see if the marking are on the old belt and put it that way. Sometimes the instructions in the kit will tell you. Thanks for watching

    Thanks for making the effort to post this. Could you do this operation without the car on a lift? How high up would you need to raise the car to do this comfortably, and how long does it take when you're not stopping to film it? :)

    You need to take off the passenger front wheel and I would get it at least a foot off the ground so you can go from the top to the bottom to work. Then when you take off the water pump it a mess. I try to catch all the coolant so your not kneeling in all the coolant. I take my time and do not like to be pulled away when I am doing one. It takes me a good 5 to 6 hours to do one of these. I know other people that can do it faster but I do not want to mess up and ruin a motor. Thanks for watching.

    I just installed a timing belt kit on my 2002 Lexus ES300 and it's timed perfectly but I'm curious to know why it is that when you line up all the marks then rotate the crankshaft two times the lines on the belt don't line up with the timimg marks on the camshafts or crankshaft? Just like it says in the video @8:31.

    I don't have an answer for that, but I know if you keep turning it over the marks will line back up eventually.

    It's because when he did two revolutions of the crank the belt only traveled twice the circumference of the crank pulley/sprocket (whatever those are called). C=pi * D. So if the pulley was 4 in. diameter then 4*3.14 = 12.56" per revolution. With a belt that long, you can see you'll need a few more turns on the crank to get the marks back around to where you started from.

    EricTheCarGuy has a good answer for this. The timing belt and pullys are designed so that each tooth of the belt will mate with a diffent tooth of the pullys on each revolution, I guess so the teeth of the belt wear more evenly, particularly if one pully tooth has a slight imperfection. I think this is acheived by the pullys having an even number of teeth and the timing belt an odd number of teeth (or vise-versa) In ETCG's video, he rotated the timing belt around 40-something turns until the marks lined back up with the marks on the pully.

    I have a question about the timing belt cover, I understand it has some kind of gasket on the cover to help keep dirt out. But of all the timing belt replacement videos, I never hear anyone mention anything about the gasket on the cover. Is that something that should maybe be replaced with new gasket material when doing this job?

  • @TheGAutomotiveAndMore

    @TheGAutomotiveAndMore

    Yes there is a dust gasket on the plastic timing cover. As long as the car has no oil leaks behind the cover that gasket is reusable. Oil will swell that gasket on most cars.
