Timeline of Chancellors of Germany - Bismarck to Scholz

The chancellor of Germany is the political leader of Germany and the head of the federal government. The office holder is responsible for selecting all other members of the government and chairing cabinet meetings.
The office was created in the North German Confederation in 1867, when Otto von Bismarck became the first chancellor. With the unification of Germany and establishment of the German Empire in 1871, the Confederation evolved into a German nation-state and its leader became known as the chancellor of Germany. Originally, the chancellor was only responsible to the emperor. This changed with the constitutional reform in 1918, when the Parliament was given the right to dismiss the chancellor. Under the 1919 Weimar Constitution the chancellors were appointed by the directly elected president, but were responsible to Parliament. The constitution was set aside during the 1933-1945 Nazi dictatorship. During Allied occupation, no independent German government and no chancellor existed; and the office was not reconstituted in East Germany, thus the head of government of East Germany was chairman of the Council of Ministers. The 1949 Basic Law made the chancellor the most important office in West Germany, while diminishing the role of the president.
This is a chronologically ordered list of Chancellors of Germany.

    In Germany we count seperated in the states we had. In the ,,Kaiserreich" was Bismarck the longest serving Chancellor. The weimarer Republik had a turbulent time where noone has ruled a long period of time. In the ,,dritten Reich" Hitler ,,served" 12 terrible years and after that there Was a period we call it Nachkriegszeit in which the allied ruled the splitted germany. In the time after that the exist two states, one survived until now, the other one was annected. The state with the chancellors is the federal republic of germany. Merkel and Kohl ruled oure Country respectivily for 16 years. Kohl some Days more.

    Some Funfacts: Konrad Adenauer was the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Even though Germany was at its knees in 1955 by the end of his term it was a European power again. His foreign policy was something which made him unique, instead of begging the allies to do something for him, he’d wait until the allies would beg him. The best example was NATO. He first joined the observers of NATO, triggering a fuse of discussion in NATO if Germany would be allowed to join. When Churchill and Eisenhower started begging Adenauer to join, he agreed. This made it possible for him to also set up the Bundeswehr, the new German army. Despite his achievements as economics minister, Ludwig Erhardt oversaw post-war Germany’s first economic crisis as chancellor. He totally mismanaged the situation and only made things worse. He’s (factually!) regarded as post-war Germany’s worst Chancellor. Willy Brandt is considered to be the German JFK. He was very charismatic, down to earth and pragmatistic and helped to settle down the tensions in the cold war. Kurt-Georg Kiesinger was in the Nazi party before the War ended. He allegedly never agreed to the party’s policies and wanted to “change them from within”. Although this sounds suspicious, several letters of him from 1937-1944 may back this up. But his involvement in the Nazi party was heavily discussed amongst the public and his image was ruined when he was slapped by a woman during a party conference. Helmut Schmidt is considered to be the best chancellor in the FRG’s history. His charismatic yet brutally honest speeches earned him the nickname “Schmidt Schnauze” (Schmidt Snout). Helmut Kohl is famous for reuniting Germany but what many don’t know is that he wanted the pre-WW2 territories back. He once referred back to a speech from Konrad Adenauer who said: “One day my dear friends (Silesians), the time will come for you return to your homes! Then it will be your Silesia again, a beautiful, German Silesia!” This never went anywhere though since the allies (and Poland) weren’t...amused to say the least. Gerhard Schröder is famous for his open, humorous but also midly arrogant way. During an autograph signing, he famously said: „Bring me a bottle of beer now or else I‘ll strike and won‘t sign anything anymore!“ His arrogance also was his downfall when he triggered a reelection (he basically asked the parliament if they still trust them and they didn‘t). Merkel recently got a lot of media attention when she requested that the leading Music band of the Bundeswehr would play her two songs during her military send-off. The Punk song „Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen“ (You‘ve forgotten the colour film!) and „Für mich solls rote Rosen regnen!“ (It shall rain red roses for me). Olaf Scholz is often referred to as Scholz-O-Mat by the German public since his quiet, emotionless and almost stiff attitude make him look like a robot.

Given that the system could be easily trolled due to constitutional weakpoints, it's quite remarkeable that there were only 9 elections. Unless you know: Chlodwig is a very old Frankish name from the Merovingian dynasty, even before Charlemagne. And for the Germans, they are just as much a successor state of the Frankish Empire as France. Normally, however, the German name of Charlemagne (Karl) was taken much more often for children. The name "von Hohenlohe" (since the 12th century) comes from a castle in the German duchy of Franconia (formed in the 10th century), which then as now is called the same as the tribe of Charlemagne and Chlodwig, at least in German... called Franken. Schillingsfürst also comes from an (old) castle in this area, even if this addition came much later ( in the 17th century). So they went full frankish... P.S. it's not even the longest family name of this house.

  • @NicolaW72

    @NicolaW72

    During the Holy Roman Empire the Princes of Hohenlohe in their different lines (Schillingsfürst was only one of them) were ruling their own Principalities. In the early 19th century they were annexed during the rulership of Napoleon and later not restored. Franz Joseph Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1787 - 1841), the father of Chlodwig, was the last ruling Prince, which territory Napoleon gave then partially to Bavaria and partially to Württemberg. There still exists a District of Hohenlohe today in the State of Baden-Württemberg. Chlodwig Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst was indeed Prime Minister of Bavaria from 1866 until 1870 before he became the first Roman-Catholic German Chancellor in 1894. Btw. his younger brother Gustav Adolf Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1823 - 1896) was a Cardinal of the Roman-Catholic Church and an influential Church Politician under Pope Leo XIII.

    @@Dave_Albright Not really, because I'm not particularly interested in it, it's too often the subject... while I, as a Franconian, am definitely interested in Franconian history. But according to German Wikipedia: Hitler is a spelling variant of the family name "Hiedler" of Hitler's ancestors, first used by Adolf Hitler's father Alois Hitler. "Hiedler" is derived from "Hiedl", a word from the Bavarian dialect for an underground water spring or river. Btw. The family history of Hitler is a little bit more chaotic... And for Adolf... it is a mixture of "noble" (in german "edel") and "wolf" (same word in german), those who know the series "Vikings" will also know the British variant "Æthelwulf" of it... which is apparently linguistically even closer to the origin.

    I think it was a sign of the nobilitiy. You can also see how in the beginning of the „Weimarer Republik“ (1919) the chancellors from the centre party which were mostly nobles or descendants from nobles had longer mustaches while the chancellors from the social democratic party where mostly from the working class and had shorter mustaches. You can also see it in their names: „von“ means from and it means they are nobles.

    Some facts about the older chancellors: -Bismarck, well known for his efforts to unite the german states and balance-of-power diplomacy, became quite unpopular for his policies in internal affairs. He started to fight catholic influences (e.g. introduced the civil marriage) which angered german catholics, and he also started the "Schutzzollpolitik" (protective tariffs policy), which angered the Liberals. He also disrusted the newly formed Social Democratic Party (which he declared illegal) and implemented the first welfare state to shrink their popularity. His negative attidute towards the working class cost him his job however, when the new emperor WIlhelm II refused to continue the anti-socialist policies. -Leo von Caprivi tried to reform the state in several aspects. He declared his policies as a new course ("Neuer Kurs"). He tried to end the conflict with the catholics, solve issues of the working class (Wilhelm II was also very keen to have a positive relationship with the workers) and abolished the protectionist trade policies which transformed germany to an export-focussed economy. He was also a supporter of the colonial movement. All these new approaches lead to his downfall, when he had lost his majority in parliament. -Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst was basically a placeholder. He had no dedication to force through anything and did not have any own policies. He was dominated by Wilhelm´s decisions. -Bernhard von Bülow was like his 2 predecessors not capable of rejecting the emperor and even agreed on his policies. He continued to worsen the german diplomatic position in europe, and when and interview with Wilhelm II was published in the UK (Daily-Telegraph-Affair), which lead to an extreme worsening of relations between the 2 countries, Bülow was fired since he was responsible for public relations of the emperor. -Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg tried to to improve UK-german relations to maintain peace in europe by trying to settle the naval arms race. He even managed increase relations with Russia. In internal affairs, many saw him as a progressive politician, even the Social Democrats supported him sometimes. Still, he was adament in increasing the budget for the Army. He played an important role during the July-crisis, which lead to WW1. While stating several times, that war is not an option, he hoped a conflict could stay localized. However, he was not successful in preventing the emperor to declare germany as an austrian ally (at any cost), or the outbreak of the war. -Georg Michaelis had very little power. Germany became a de facto military dictatorship during the war lead by Hindenburg and Ludendorff (Chiefs of Staff of the military). In his period, the Reichstag began to propose peace negotiations and a more democratic controlled executive. Both initiatives were ignored. -Georg von Hertling was also limited in his power. He was confronted with the same issues as Michaelis, but had to accept reforms towards a democratization. -Max von Baden was only chancellor for a few weeks, but in this time, the mentioned reforms came to a conclusion. It is often forgotten but really interesting, how the political system would have changed if these reforms were actually applied. The main parts were the introduction of a proportional election law and an alteration in the position of the chancellor, who now has to rely on a parliament majority. All in all, this would have led to a political system almost identical to the UK, with a strong parliament and a weak monarch. These reforms however became obsolete as the November-Revolution began.

    This perfectly shows one of the biggest problems of the Weimar republic. It makes sense, that a population with nearly no democratic background (yes there were elections before, but the Reichstag was only allowed to set up the state budget and had no political power) isn't instantly democratic. But the changing governments literally killed every hope in the democracy. Apart from many cultural, economical, and political reasons the trust in the democracy had absolutely no time to develop before 1933.

    The main reason was the collapse of the currency, not the lack of democratic virtues. Between 1919 and 1923, the "Mark" disintegrated completely and a new currency, the "Reichsmark", was determined, which was partly based on the US-dollar. When in 1929/1930 this currency also collapsed because the world economic crisis forced the USA to withdraw its own money from abroad. Twice within 14 years, inflation destroyed the savings and financial assets of the middle class in particular, thereby weakening the position of the supporters of a liberal model of society.

    Helmut Kohl loved to be seen as the Father of the German Reunification, or "Einheit", as we say in Germany. But actually, he wasn't quite as much as he wanted to be. The Einheit was realized by Michail Gorbatschow, who wanted to get rid of Eastern Germany because the Soviet Union and the Satellite States were already going down, and George Bush senior, who promised himself better strategic options with a reunited Germany for future confrontations with the Russians. The other two Leaders of the Allied Nations by the way, Francois Mitterand and Margaret Thatcher, wanted to avoid a reunited Germany at all costs. Thatcher is believed to having said something like "just over my dead body!"

    So, it's seems like there's a never ending hope of repeating the succes of Herr Bismarck, as we see 4 figures in somewhat equal timespans. I personally like very much Herr Konrad Adenauer(and also Herr Bruno Kreisky) who made some genial things for rebuilding Germany(and so made Kreisky in Austria) after it was devastated. The ones who achieve success in hard times, are the ones who remain not forgotten, it doesn't matter the country, or even the field of leadership.

    He was originally part of the Papen-Cabinet as an independent Conservative, in fact being very close to the DNVP = Deutschnationale Volkspartei (German National People´s Party, a right wing conservative Party). He stayed in the capacity of the German Finance Minister from May of 1932 until May of 1945 - but from 1937 onwards HE WAS member of the NSDAP. Hitler made it obligatory in this year to be member of the NSDAP to be member of his Government. The only minister who left the Government because he don´t wanted to become a member of the NSDAP was Paul von Eltz-Rübenach, the Transport Minister and also a former independent conservative member of the Papen-Cabinet.

    No. He was Minister President/ Prime Minister of Prussia from 1862 until 1890. Most of the Chancellors during the German Empire runned both political positions similarly, but they were two different political positions! In the Weimar Republic and during the Nazi Time both political positions were seperated. Minister President of Prussia was most of the time from 1921 until 1933 Otto Braun from the Social Democratic Party and from 1933 until 1945 Hermann Göring from the NSDAP, while similarly during the Weimar Republic this whole bunch of Chancellors governed the "Reich" and, as commonly known, Adolf Hitler hold the position of the Chancellor between 1933 and 1945. The Allied Military Governments (and indeed: all four Allied Military Governments together, including the Soviet Union) abandoned the State of Prussia in 1947 and founded most of the current German States as its successors.
