    The advanced settings are great when there is an intersection with trams. When a tram is waiting move to the next, and when no tram is waiting also move to the next. Set min waiting time for the phase of the trams to 2 and the one befor max at double the min of that phase.

    That's the secret to analysis of complex systems. If it's too much to take in, break it down into sub-systems, until each subsystem is graspable, then treat each subsystem as a unit in the next up level.

    This is bonkers, I'm an architecture student and I play this game to get my creative juices flowing so I'm pretty good when it comes to aesthetics and flow and separating areas by purpose blablabla, but more IMPORTANT technical stuff like this-- EXACTLY these are my weakness, I just plonk down roundabouts and go on with my day but I do want more realistic intersections and interchanges but I'm basically a chimp with a hammer with these and suddenly I get it now, this 20min video alone felt like I had a class lecture at university today, great help, amazing production quality too!

    Agreed. I WISH we had college/university teachers that taught half as well as these videos. Would make school so much fun. I love learning new things, but public schools hammer it in more than they actually teach, so it's just painful and boring. Quick tip on pedestrians. You can alwas add a quick dedicated phase to them, when they all cross the road in all the directions while all the cars are waiting. For CS peds a couple of seconds would be enough, but it would ease the flow of the cars on the other phases.

    Hey there! I'm a traffic engineer and I wanted to give you props for your videos! This just happened to be the one where i left this comment on, but I am a big fan of all your videos and can't wait to see more! Your basic timed traffic light is based on the American RBC (Ring barrier controlled) method I believe. Should you be interested in learning how we manage our traffic lights in the Netherlands then hit me up! Same goes for making turbo-roundabouts, (the poorly translated) yield-plaza's, turbo-plaza's, with or without timed traffic lights and how to set them up to be monsters for throughput with contemporary design philosophy (durable, safe and future proof). In addition, let me know if you want to discuss the 'new' Dutch cities of Almere and Lelystad. These cities have been planned from the ground up and are entirely different from historical cities and American cities in how they function and are built up. Basically they started out with a complete public transport system and cycling system first, with the road system added later on. Since they are very new cities, a lot of fresh design concepts are used for them. I have sources accessible through the internet as well to show you how these cities have coped with their tremendous growth over the last few years as well. Very interesting to see entire sections of highway change in a year or two, have entirely new complexes pop out of the ground between two google maps streetview photo's. Just a quick rambling above. If you are interested, I can try making a 'response' video of sorts a lá KZread in the 2000's in which the above concepts are further explained and better structured.

    Interesting how traffic lights work in the US (i assume). Here in Austria the straight and right hand turn are green at the same time as the oposit street. Than straight and right turn red and left gets green. that 90° rotation to the other two streets. But maybe that all depends if the main flow is going straight or makes a turn. Anyways great video, really understandable.

    its nice how you describe the timed traffic lights in a row, we have the same in Vienna too, there is the big road dividing inner and outer city which is called the "Gürtel" in english "belt", its a 15 km long road in the middle of the city with a ton of traffic lights, and -of course - during daytime always busy there, but if you manage to go abit over 50 km/h like 53, you can go trough all the traffic lights in one rush. Its impossible during daytime but in night hours knowing this fact, it is the quickest way trough the city. Its called the "green wave". Have tried to implement this in my cities in cities skylines too, with timed traffic lights, but never managed to do it right ;) after more than 3 traffic lights it starts to get asynchron

    Very interesting presentation, as always. Your presentation style is very relaxing. First of all, for "conjunction"?, if anything, "con" would be a prefix to the base ford "junction". I've been meaning to watch this vid for a while. I spent the vast majority of my driving career in California. California allows Right On Red. Here in Germany, it's mixed. In the former East, RoR I've been told is routine. Here in the Rhineland, it's occasional. I suggest allowing RoR, it can help traffic flow a bunch, particularly with lane management, and there are prototypical examples in Real World.

    The intersections both turning at the same time works if the time to cross the overpass is about the time it takes cycle all the phases. You could also have the intersections doing the opposite thing with each phase being longer than the time it takes to cross the overpass which I think should require less fine tuning of timing

  • @YUMBL

    OMG, proper lane use and ditching the vanilla all lanes do all things mechanic is so critical! I've had a few cases where traffic jams started forming in my city, and almost invariably I'd end up tracking the source of that traffic jam to some lane I'd forgotten to fix was doing left and straight or straight and right or something like that and ALL of the traffic would congest up in just ONE lane of a 6 freaking lane road! That means that multi purpose lane default was causing that road to basically lose 2/3 of it's capacity! As soon as I'd get the dedicated turning and straight on lanes, that traffic jam would start clearing up and not come back. Of course, if you have only 1 or 2 lanes each way to work with, you can't avoid having multi purpose lanes, for a standard 4 way intersection. Traffic needs to go on 3 different directions from there and with only 1 or 2 lanes to work with, something needs to get doubled up. If you have them, asymmetric roads leading into busy intersections can fix that problem by adding an extra lane into the intersection to better spread out and specialize your lanes.

    The flow slider is very powerful and helps to squeeze out as much traffic as possible from an intersection that's very busy but not equally from every side and/or with inconsistent approach and turning behaviors. With it you can set min times as low as 1 and as high as 4 with little reason to increase beyond that. Maximum times can be any number since the signaling will be controlled by the flow calculations. A note: flow is set to 0.3 on auto-generated lights while it's 0.8 when starting from the blank template. A 0.5 difference might not seem like much given how far the meter goes, but it makes an enormous difference in terms of when the light changes when comparing moving traffic to waiting traffic.

    Really great explanation of how timed traffic lights work. But I wish you would have gone a bit deeper into the more difficult stuff. For example, how to offset the timer to get a green wave for 2, 3 or more connected intersections. Or those advanced settings, which you mention at 9:18. I've been looking for information on those for so long. But there's no one out there who tells you how they work. Well...maybe that's something for another video. :) Thanks for your great work.

    I’m flattered that you think I’m that good. I can set up a decent junction, but I don’t generally do more than two lights. Getting a green wave down a major stretch would require lots of planning on my part, so you and I may be in the same boat! Thank you for watching :)

    I have several lights in my current city that cover 2 or 3 intersections with a common 'program.' I even had one program running lights at 6 intersections at one point. That was fun. It gets very complicated very fast and requires a lot of preplanning but when done right it is so helpful to traffic flow. I only do this however when lights are really close together. I also use the advanced options about traffic flow vs wait and the weight slider all the time. I have learned so much about traffic engineering just by playing the game with this mod. Maybe I should make a video.... although I have no idea how my machine would handle recording while playing.... I should test that....

    I literally, right now, am in game messing with a busy intersection and discovered that Timed Traffic Lights completely fixed the issue of two opposing turn lanes having green lights, thus cars turning across each other, stopping traffic as one waits for the other. Creating timed lights with phases manually seems a bit too comprehensive for me so ctrl+clicking to auto setup one is enough for me, though I have noticed that the auto setup light gives all lanes in one direction their own turn, so traffic in one direction backs up waiting for their turn in the cycle.

    The relationship between "junction" and "conjunction" didn't happen in English but rather in Latin before both were adopted into French and then into English. In VERY rough terms you can think of them as deriving from the word for "join" as a root conjugated with a suffix roughly equivalent to "-ing" (present participle) in English and one has a prefix meaning "with". So "junction" means "joining" and "conjunction" means "joining with" which is kind of redundant since joining is inherently "with" something even when that something is itself, which is why "junction" and "conjunction" are often used interchangeably. If you really want to think about it as a compound in English then "junction" would be the root and "con-" would be a prefix.

    “junction” is actually the root word in “conjunction,” with “con-“ being a prefix. Junction is a borrowing from Latin literally meaning “joining,” and the prefix “con-“ is also from Latin, an assimilated version of the preposition “cum,” meaning “with” (and pronounced “koom”) when used as a prefix. So a traffic junction is a “joining place” and a linguistic conjunction is a “word that joins one phrase WITH another”. Each word is used in a wide variety of other contexts too, all related to joining.

Avoid forcing people to merge lanes on a crossing or intersection. It's better to apply "lane mathematics" and make sure there is a node before or after the crossing/intersection where they can change lanes. C:S drivers like their options on intersections to be limited. They are very capable of planning ahead, as opposed to drivers in real life ;-).

    I put a timed light on a DDI the other night and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. The cycles were right, I could see the lights changing, but the traffic wasn't responding. Turned out that the timed light didn't override the vanilla light that had been there. So I had two lights on each intersection. Toggled the vanilla lights off and everything worked as expected. Thus I learned to always toggle lights off before adding a timed light.

    at 18:36 it looks like that's an asymmetric 2+1 lane highway being used. with the 2 lanes coming into the city street. Since all traffic at that intersection must turn right and will probably be set up, if they haven't been already, to merge into the outside lane on the city street, there really doesn't need to be 2 lanes there. If the lanes were reversed so the 2 lane side were for the traffic entering the highway, then those turning right could be allowed a permanent green as the left turns and right turns would each have their own separate lane to use and would never cross each other's paths. Then only the left turns and the straight on lanes who cross each other's paths would ever need to be stopped at any time.

  • @YUMBL

    @YUMBL

    This is a partial cloverleaf. I didnt invent it and its a fairly standard design. The reason I went with two lanes is to give traffic somewhere to stack up, and give them an option to enter into whatever lane they want. Options for vehicles that want to leave the intersection on the left basically.

  • @Seriously_Unserious

    @Seriously_Unserious

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@YUMBL For sure. Just sharing different options on how to handle it. If you have a single lane, they really don't need to stack up though, as they'll have a permanent green and can just keep going. The other way also has less need for red lights as only those turning left onto this the entrance ramp need and the lanes they're crossing ever need to be stopped, as those right turning onto the exit ramp, if both have their own separate lanes, never cross each other's paths, with proper lane control. Just the analyst in me looking at a design and asking "how could we tweak this to get more flow?"
