'Time’ to return Elgin Marbles to Greece: Piers Morgan

Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan says the debate about whether the Elgin Marbles should leave or remain at the British Museum is almost as old as the marbles themselves.
“Those who want them to stay in the British Museum are worried it will open the floodgates,” Mr Morgan said.
“They say countries around the world will begin demanding the return of all our colonial treasures."
Mr Morgan said he sympathised with this opinion in the past but ultimately came down to an argument from the Greek Prime Minister who said it was a matter of where they can best be appreciated.
“The British Museum could still own the marbles but also loan them back to Greece as it does with many thousands of other artefacts every single year.”

By all means call them the Parthenon Marbles but Greece was never a colony of the UK and they weren't stolen, Elgin having obtained a permission from the Ottomans (the colonist). The Ottomans cared little for the Parthenon and three quarters of the Parthenon Marbles were destroyed following a explosion (the Parthenon being used as an ammunition dump). Lord Elgin's want for the Marbles was not entirely honourable but by some strange quirk of fate he saved them from total destruction. I support the return of the Marbles to Greece but don't use emotive language which is untrue to support your argument.

@@athenarockabilly6245 I don't think you read my post. I agree they should be returned. However, the Ottomans who had occupied your country for 350 years or there abouts had no interest in preserving the Parthenon, in fact they were using it for target practice following the explosion. A lot of what was recovered was lying in the rubble surrounding the building. As I said previously, Lord Elgin by accident almost certainly saved the remainder of the Marbles from being lost in their entirety. As for your comment about the Romans, I'm quite sure they took parts of our heritage and sold them on but there are no records to confirm or deny this.

what we Greeks are trying to explain is the fact that these sculptures belong to the Parthenon's frieze (the upper part of the monument) in which the procession of the Athenians in the great festival of the goddess Athena (Panathenaia) is depicted on all 4 sides. There are hoplites (192 hoplites, as many as were killed in the battle of Marathon), ancient chariots, priestesses who carry Athena's veil to the Parthenon, which was dedicated to her. In other words, it is a representation with a beginning, a middle and an end, and the sculptures, which are missing, stop/interrupt the narrative, which is why we say that it is an integral part of the temple and the narrative.

The British government has the moral obligation to return the Marbles of Parthenon to Greece and demonstrate to the World that they respect the history of other Countries. In other words, Imperialism and Colonialism are things of the past. The number of missing sculptures in the Museum’s reconstruction of the magnificent Parthenon frieze is dramatically noticeable, and a sad reminder of all the invasions, occupations and theft that robbed Greece of her glorious past. It would be a virtuous gesture by England, a nation that prides herself on being noble and honourable, to return the Parthenon Marbles to their rightful home in the new Acropolis Museum in Athens.

The marbles are only here because one man in the empire cared so much about them he spent in equivalent 5million today of his own money to take and preserve them, the partheneon was used as target practice by the Venetians in 1687 when it was blew up, the locals were defacing it and stealing from it after it was left in disarray so there’s an argument the locals didn’t care about them then, the man went straight to the ottomans and had it legally done that he could take them to preserve them, the British empire did not take them it was one individual, but it begs the question if he hadn’t intervened would anyone today even be able to see them, and for anyone wondering about how the state got them the guy had a very expensive divorce it’s not even a joke he had to sell them to the state and the British state did enquire about the legality of it when they acquired them and were given the green light. So it’s not the old black and white case of ol colonial England stealing stuff off people as some would like to believe.

If Elgin hadn't taken them, in all likelihood they would still be in their original place. i.e on the Parthenon frieze. Whether he cared more than the Greeks of that time is irrelevant. Greeks were uneducated peasants under Ottoman rule at the time. They had very little say on the matter. What Elgin's actions, and other similar ones, do show is that the British view the world in a very selfish and self absorbed way. Everything revolves around Britain and everything is expendable as long as it's for Britain's gain. Well guess what, Britain is not an empire anymore. You need to start dealing with that reality.

I fully understand that Israel is apartheid, but at the same time they've been under frequent attack from Palestine for decades which is why those restrictions have been put in place. Would you continue to have friendly relations with people who actively want to slaughter you? Israel are willing to co-exist but Hamas openly admit they want nothing less than the destruction of Israel and the death of every Jew on that land. Neither side is innocent in this, but the actions of Israel are generally in response to the acts of aggression from Palestine, not the other way around. The ones who have broken the most ceasefires and initiated almost every attack during their multi-decade long conflict is Palestine. They've rejected every attempt at peace that Israel has offered, or accepted simply to give them enough time to prepare to launch their next attack, and Hamas openly admit that their only thought of peace with this ends with the destruction of Israel and the death of every Jew on that land. underground

I find the argument based on ownership to be a useless one because it always bogs down in legalisms. The simple argument is that the marbles, whatever you call them, were an iintegral part of the Parthenon and are best seen in their original context. They are not like paintings which get bought and sold an end up in a museum somewhere in the world which you can visit, if you have the money. They were part of a great building that people visit only to discover they have to go somewhere far away to see the rest if it. They deserve to be reunited and most people know it, even if they do not want to admit it. I love the British Museum and would love it even more if they simply did the right thing and sent them back to Greece. They could call it a gift. I would be fine with that. Museums are filled with art labelled as a gift of so and so. I would be just fine with a sign that said they were a gift from the British Museum. Or call it a permanent loan from the British Museum. Whatever, just get them back to their mother in Greece. The godess Athena herself would be most grateful to have them back.

Since when artifacts are named after the person that showed them no respect rather agreed in the butchering of a world heritage monument by the Ottoman Empire? Instead of using his political position to oppose to the vandalism by the Turks, not only he did not do anything to protect the monument but he took advantage of the enslavement of Greece by the Turks. This act is an embarrassment to the Brits. If they fully understood the circumstances under which the marbles were extracted from the Parthenon, I am certain that most of them would agree they should be returned where they belong to.

The thing I find ironic is that the Greek PM uses the example of an artefact that is itself the subject of ownership controversy to make his argument. After all what is an Italian masterpiece doing stuck in a French museum? But I’m sure the ML we see in the Louvre is in fact a duplicate with the original tucked away in a secure vault somewhere. Nobody is any the wiser; and so it is with the duplicates that are now on display in Athens. You don’t need the original to appreciate its artistry.

ALL artifacts should be returned immediately. Laws should be established that no such artifacts be posessed, aquired, bought or sold by anyone including elected officials of a principal or destination entity or country. Only a nation's people themselves should have that right. By direct agreement and not by proxy. Distribution of any proceeds should also be decided by the people themselves. All nations should demand the return of their historical works, period. A global class action by all plundered nations and societies, big and small, sounds about right here. Greece should not only demand the return of their legacy but should also demand that payment be made for all the revenue generated from the possesion of these works. A rent or percentage or proceeds should be remited from the benefit and premium charged for such possessions. It is ultimately a form of grave robbing regardless of buyer or seller (thief or fence). Copyrights should also apply. Fees should be charged for any facsemilies and other reproductions and may be offered by the principal countries. The question of penalties should also be explored for past and future violations of these rights. And yes Mr. Sunak, you CAN "change laws" in order to serve justice. Novel idea?

Did he say ‘our marbles’? I don’t think that any British had anything to do with the making of them, nor funding them. That's factually incorrect, it was the Venetians that destroyed the greatest Greek monument which was being used as an ammunition store.by the Ottomans. Elgin rescued a lot of Marbles from the rubble. I notice you're not asking the Venetians for the Marbles they stole, why's that? Probably because those were ground to make flooring that now decorates a home. At least Elgin took care of them and there is something to return to Greece which will rightly happen in due course.
