The King Ellery and his two knights. All are once in a lifetime players, and us at Wigan got to see all three within a decade. We was spoiled. Ellery is by far the best player I've ever seen.

Absolutely spot on, I saw ellery live at Leichardt oval for the tigers as a kid and he was electrifying ! I’ve only seen the hill at Leichardt on their feet for the entire game once for ellery and the king Wally Lewis.

Ellery was the best I’ve seen in the British game in 40 years. His secret was his unbelievable preparation to be the best at everything he did including his fitness, strength, skill and unwavering belief. I heard a recent podcast and it wasn’t just how he played on the field he’s basically lived his life the same way…doesn’t drink, smoke and never done drugs.

I spoke to ellery after a game at parramatta stadium 1997, what a humble down to earth bloke, would speak with anyway, I couldn’t believe I was talking to him great memory.

Great video, thanks a lot. Ellery - the finest rugby player I have ever seen supported by two others who run him close. We were blessed at Wigan.

Saints fan here: that Wigan team of that era, as much as it wasn’t good for the domestic game ( pro v semi pro) , they carried the British RL game. Me and my dad were at the Manly game in our Saints tops shouting for Wigan (it was GB v AUS for us) and I remember Wigan fans looking at us as if…what! The game of RL needed Wigan at that time. That said, we got all teams going full time after that. The test is history,. COYS!

I'd give Wally the edge because of his kicking game and his distribution, it meant that if a team marked him effectively he'd just get the ball somewhere else it needed to be. But Ellery's fitness and athleticism were something else, as was his reading of the game - you don't score that many tries without knowing where you need to be. Both were in their pomp when I first got interested in this wonderful game.

Ellery is, an was the epitome of professionalism, his whole approach is about being great. I always got the impression when he got the sack as the Saints coach it was because he wanted the players to be as professional as he was.

Think he called the board of directors dinosaur’s they couldn’t wait to get rid of him. They were the ones that weren’t up to his standard. The season they won the Grand Final in 1999 there had already been a big fall out but the players loved him and played for him. After a bad start to the following season the Saints board couldn’t wait to sack him. There was rumours though he wanted to replace Cunningham and Martyn for Pachnuik and Holroyd…no idea if it was true but it would have been a poor swap !

As a Leeds fan throughout this period of wigan dominence it was hard to take the continual mauling that the Loiners were subjected to, whether at Central Park or Headingley. Funny thing was we always lived in hope. Never saw Leeds beat Wigan away during this time (or Hull for that matter) but we always thought we had a chance. Rather like soccer now and the likes of Man City who have money to burn, the lop sided nature of the top and bottom of the league can be gauged by money. However, it still requires a coach or manager to make the most expensive players gell and Wigan undoubtably recruited the best in order to orchestrate their success. Great period for the game.

Ellery Hanley: the greatest player ever. Martin Offiah: the greatest winger ever. Shaun Edwards: the greatest signing ever. And, even though Hanley played for Bradford and Leeds, it's obvious where his love really is.
