Time may be running out for Big Ben

London's Big Ben has been chiming out the hours for 156 years. But it turns out the ancient clockwork - a charming example of Victorian engineering - is a bit temperamental, and problems with accuracy (last summer it was a whole six seconds out of whack) have prompted calls to shut down and rebuild the clock, a process that could take years. Mark Phillips reports.

I miss that clock, here in England, its very hard to say goodbye to it for 4 years, I'm used to it ringing everyday that i go to work, its been there since i was a baby, and i really was annoyed by it when i would go to school, but i learned to love it, i really wish it would be fixed this year, I miss my favorite clock!!

xXShargiaArtsXx Indeed, London, it's Palace, Tower, Bridge and Cathedral of Westminster, as well as all it's other great historical buildings and Landmarks need to be Cherished! The bell known as Big Ben, is the largest ever cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in it's considerably long history of over 500 years, it's the oldest business in England. They've closed the doors on the original location and have planned to relocate, but the good thing about the Grade listing process of buildings is that once given Grade I or Grade II status such as the Foundry has been granted, it means that the building cannot be demolished or destroyed or modified by modernisation, so beautifully retains its original features and appearance and prominence in history and that's something no one can put a price on, regardless of nationality. I'd like to think that many Americans, have a pride in historical status and the sanctity thereof, and appreciate the beauty of the landscape, the monuments, ruins, great buildings, stately homes, castles, palaces, of England and Great Britain. There's plenty of them still, and many organisations, individuals (myself included) and charities dedicated to maintaining and preserving them for all time. And of course discovering the remains and locations of those that are lost.

the Elizabeth tower and big ben are so much to us Brits. look! it even survived the blitz! even if it didn't work anymore, our future generations wouldn't have the same spirit.you have a real surge of excitement when your stuck in boring traffic and you hear it go off. I'm only 11 but I know for sure that it's something special. I go to London a lot and I'm in love with its history. so many things to learn about it! it would be a real shame if it went. I was really excited because i saw it when I went to the houses of parliament a few years back with a few people i did a marathon with. (the view was spectacular) we heard it every hour and we were so excited. I've always been a true Brit and proud of it.

Excuse me, but I just choked at the blasé tone of the American presenter saying that it'd be a pity if Big Ben wasn't there or the Tower itself. What a cheek! Sound like he was downplaying and disrespecting the importance and marvel of the wonderful Bell, clock and architecture of the tower in which it's housed. I'm Proud of London, proud of the Palace and Tower of Westminster, and the Cathedral of course, proud of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry that cast the Great Bell we all lovingly know as Big Ben. Londoners, tourists and people from all over the world love the tower, the clock and the beautiful bells that chime within. Sure it may be a few seconds slow, and need regular monitoring, but it's kept time since 1859 so it's not going to stop anytime soon is it? Too much money and effort would be put into keeping it running and in repair and the tower too!

Theres two things that I've read about Elizabeth Tower, I was recently looking up its history because I'm a huge fan of clock towers/chimes! #1, I read that 11 years ago back in May of 05 it froze at 10:07pm possibly due to hot weather! It continued but it froze again 13 minutes later at 10:20pm, supposedly it was due to unseasonably warm temperatures 90 degrees! I don't get how hot weather can stop a clock from running, it happened on May 27th, 2005! Usually in late May just before June is when the weather starts getting warm, unless its different in the UK! I'm from Long Island, been here all my life! And #2 many years ago on the night of June 3rd into the morning of June 4th the clock stopped at 10:13pm due to someone dropping a hammer into the works and it wasn't reactivated until the following morning at 10:13am, thats another thing that made me scratch my head! Why would you stop a clock for a full 12 hours for something that sounded relatively simple? But then again, they have their reasons! But Big Ben (the chimes) has always been fascinating to hear, Elizabeth Tower is a beautiful building! Like I said, I'm a huge fan of clock towers/chimes! I really hope to make it out to the UK one day to see Elizabeth Tower and hear the chimes in person, that wold be a smashing good experience!

DavetGames 'Elizabeth Tower' in your words, was never called Big Ben in the first place. It's called Westminster clock tower. Big Ben is the bell inside the tower

That would prove too dangerous ⚠️ It would cause hearing loss and the Big Ben Bell in the Bell tower is 13.5 tonnes and has a sound level of 118 decibels (118 decibels is 3 decibels beyond the threshold for the human ears which cannot handle sound louder than 115 decibels so it would cause physical pain too)

Big Ben is the name of the bell..I was born and bred in London.but not within sight or sound of the bell or tower, but I'm so familiar with it and we see and hear it on the news every single night,it's become part of the national conscious, most Londoners would agree indeed even most English people would agree,we love Big Ben and the Tower he's the Old Man of London..and the whole Nation

I don’t even live in London, haven’t even been. I want to go VERY bad just to see this clock. We have phones, and many many many many many other clocks around there. Oh no, it was 6 seconds off! We need to rebuild it!!! Stupid. I don’t care how off it is, you can still tell time. It is an antique and it should be kept that way.

I know it is 5 years old, but the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben is just the bell, and not the clock or the tower) has been undergoing massive restoration works for several years now, and has never been under any real threat. That's a few minutes of my life Ill never get back.
