Timber Frame Barn | RAISERS of the LOST ART

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A big repetitive frame out of oak really does show off what timber framing is all about.
Within the confines of a 5 minute video, the essence of a timber frame raising: the bent assembly, the manhandling and futzing to fit up, the excitement of the first bent going vertical. Dropping the posts over the hardware. Pulling timbers together and that audible/visible jolt when they finally fit together. The mud.

Watch out--timber framing is highly addictive. Seriously, congratulations and welcome to the best industry and people I've ever known.

If I knew someone doing this in my area, I might quit my job to do this... I miss being outside

Wow…that’s quite the crew! I can only imagine how much effort goes into that level of commitment and skill. I think I’m going to start with a post and beam doghouse first…for real. Love natural God made wood. Tiling sucks!

Recently saw this good quote about wood: “Wood, if you stop to think of it, has been man’s best friend in the world. It held him in his cradle, went to war as the gunstock in his hand, was the frame of the bed he came to rejoicing, the log upon his hearth when he was cold, and will make him his last long home. It was the murmuring bough above his childhood play, and the roof over the first house he called his own. It is the page he is reading at this moment; it is the forest where he seeks sanctuary from a stony world.” ― Donald Culross Peattie, American Heartwood

Are those Timberlinx A475s for the post bases? What material is that black square between the concrete and the post bottom?

  • @carolinatimberworks

Good eye! Yes, the post bases are A475s, and the square is a piece of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene.

@@carolinatimberworks Thanks, that method looks very neat and clean. I've looked at the Timberlinx product page but haven't seen many examples of implementation.

Thanks for asking. Red oak on the interior timber framing, and white oak on the exterior (for durability). When circle sawn (or rough sawn), it's hard to see the difference.
