Tim Wright Fine Violins: Giovanni Paolo Maggini

This stunning violin was made in Brescia circa 1600. That's OLD! In this video, we explore some music and history from the period to help get our heads around exactly how old the violin really is!
We had a lot of fun trying to think of a piece of music for this video, given that the violin pre-dates all of our usual repertoire... In the end, Tim arranged Orlando Gibbons' madrigal, 'The Silver Swan', for violin. This piece was first published in 1612 so it's pretty close to the same age as the instrument!

Wow. Stunning. Just curious how many Maggini violins are there still in existence? Must be one of the rarest violins, up there with Gasparo Bertolotti 'da Salò', C. Bergonzi, etc. I've heard there still may be some more Rogeri violins that have been attributed and certified as P. Maggini.
