Tim Wise: On White Privilege (Clip)

www.MediaEd.org
From the DVD:
The Pathology of Privilege
Racism, White Denial & the Costs of Inequality
For years, acclaimed author and speaker Tim Wise has been electrifying audiences on the college lecture circuit with his deeply personal take on whiteness and white privilege. In this spellbinding lecture, the author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son offers a unique, inside-out view of race and racism in America. Expertly overcoming the defensiveness that often surrounds these issues, Wise provides a non-confrontational explanation of white privilege and the damage it does not only to people of color, but to white people as well. This is an invaluable classroom resource: an ideal introduction to the social construction of racial identities, and a critical new tool for exploring the often invoked - but seldom explained - concept of white privilege.

@Bane7212 I really think the majority of individuals right and left are racist or have in-group bias. White liberals seem to have a strong out-group bias. Those biases are racist in nature. Your value or worth as an individual is defined by your race depending on the bias the individual has. Most often giving those with whom look like them preference or some loyalty to. All Tim Wise is doing here is saying white individuals are worthy of guilt and shaming for it. Which is itself a form of racism. No different than WWII bad guys demonizing and dehumanizing certain groups. We self-segregate and we tend to feel more comfortable around our own group. All human beings tend to be like this regardless of race or ethnicity. Racism will never solve racism. Only encourage tribalism, feed resentment between different groups and finally create the main byproduct of dehumanization. Which is...

As a homeless white male, who hasn't been able to find so much as a dishwashing job since graduating from a big 10 university a year and a half ago, having attended classes while living in my car for most of the time I was there, who gets looked at as if I'm a bodybuilder asking an old woman to help me lift something if I say anything about how difficult it's been to stay above water without any support from friends or family, I can testify to the power of my white privilege. It's like a cloak of power that allows people to view whatever my circumstances are, no matter how hard I've tried to change them, as a result of my own laziness and nothing else. As someone who has been to social workers and outreach programs and shelters and found that none of them are remotely intended to help me, the last five years of my life have been a gorgeous thrill-ride through my male privilege and white privilege. The homeless guys on the street too, I know for a fact they're enjoying the shit out of their male privilege. I say "homeless guys" because they are literally all fucking men.

IMHO one thing I noticed is we have a tendency to take a general conversation and make it about ourselves. I am sorry for your experiences and I can relate, a little. I too spent about 2 years homeless with a child and 9 years moving place to place until I could finally build a foundation. If you listen to the video, the history he outlines is interesting and it is not about individual circumstances because we can all fall victim to it. It is about the elite using these illusions to continue to gain for themselves. Donald Trump talks about closing the border and making the poor immigrants the villain. While he chants it and his base, predominantly white and male support him. He is supporting policies that benefit him and other wealthy people. He applied for H1-B visas to have foreigners work at Maralago. He supported a tax plan giving the lion's share of the benefits to corporations and the wealthy claiming it would trickle down and all we have witnessed is more companies leaving, people losing their jobs etc. They don't care because they can find poor people to do the work based on the conditions they offer. So this is not about your unique challenges although I understand it is sad, deplorable, frightening and beyond challenging. It is about a small percentage people using the ancient game of divide and conquer that contributes to keeping you in the circumstances you are in because they don't care about you or anyone else. They simply use you / us to main divide and conquer.

I just listened to him give a speech live tonight at my school and he made a really amazing comment that: if you fit in what society considers the “norm” group you have the ability of ignoring the issues of what society considers the “non-normative” groups around you because you don’t have to deal with the everyday issues they do. So for example if someone has a disability, it’s obvious there are things in the world that could be changed to better help people with disabilities and as a person without disabilities you have the ability to ignore these problems and go about your life because you don’t have to live with the difficulty of having a disability. You don’t have to think about “wow how can we make easier access for people with disabilities” or “wow how could we help people with disabilities get resources they need”, that may not necessarily be beneficial to you, but more than not someone with a disability will think about those things because they are real issues they have to live with everyday. Same with being colored, or having different sexual identities, if you aren’t in those groups and if you don’t have to live with it yourself, you have the ability to ignore it. And THAT is what the problem is.

Duke Dune yeah, I didn't see the part where he threatened white kids either. I do however see that the type of factual history lessons Wise presents threatens everyone who believes the narrative of meritocracy. Every speaker Ive ever heard who tells the TRUTH about the history of blacks, or Indians, or any people of color are HATED by those who rely on fear and ignorance to PERPETUATE their own beliefs and standing in America. They try to find something about the speaker that they feel is a flaw, so that he can be discounted. They say, "oh he's a damn jew, so what he say is mesningless". You can replace jew with virtually any religion other than christianity or any race other than white. Its funny... and TRAGIC: they discount and degrade anyone who knows the history that points at the issues this country overlooks, and tells people of color, who developed under a system of oppression (since the birth of our nation) to forget the historical seeds planted that created the inequities, were all equal now, so know you're PLACE.... Similar to what women live under. Some have even fed in and decades later, they truly believe systematic racism isn't real... Fear and ignorance keeps them locked in a belief system that defends our NATIONAL MISEDUCATION.....Home of the brave, huh? Yeah....

@@chrystalamber7521 First off, that's a really bold claim to be making. You're basing it on him being white, which you have no evidence of, other than your preconceived notion that only a white person would say that. Believing that is pretty racist in itself. But, regarding your comment, that's not an example of white privilege at all. It's just pointing out that white people didn't start the slave trade. It doesn't make it ok. It doesn't make whites superior. And very few people believe whites saved them. But the fact of the matter is, you can't blame white people for partaking in a system that was already in place. Especially because the slave trade is still going on in many African nations today and illegal in every predominantly white country.

As a minority in a foreign country I guess these people should be living poorly on the streets do to "Black Privilege", am I right? Well, too bad cause that's not so. The white people there are the same as any other person. Whites are not persecuted, or considered criminals or illegal immigrants based on their skin tone. Based on your knowledge this fact shouldn't be true, well news flash! This "Black Privilege" you speak of doesn't exist. The same goes for Mexico. In my short time there I saw no persecution of the white race, and I went there with 20 white classmates. Based on how the true results panned out for these bullshit allegations you through out of that thing you call brain, I think it wouldn't be a stretch to say white people are persecuted in Japan by the Japanese. I told him that it has already been established that people of color cannot be equal unless we force white society to let them come and live with them. He then said: "So non-whites can't be equal unless they get to live around whites...yet when they do you complain about white privilege?" I said: "Exactly!" He then laughed at me and as I couldn't think of any catchy hashtag slogans at the time to respond with, my liberal instincts kicked in and I called him a racist Nazi bastard and said I refused to continue the conversation with such a hateful bigot, walked away, and posted his name and personal info on the internet in hopes that some poor oppressed person of color would deal with him. But I've been carefully watching Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, and The Young Turks trying to find a counter argument that I could repeat like it was my own idea if that situation ever came up again...but to no avail.

"Talk of world peace is heard today only among the White peoples, and not among the much more numerous colored races. This is a perilous state of affairs. When individual thinkers and idealists talk of peace, as they have done since time immemorial, the effect is always negligible. But when whole peoples become pacifistic it is a symptom of senility. Strong and unspent races are not pacifistic. To adopt such a position is to abandon the future, for the pacifist ideal is a static, terminal condition that is contrary to the basic facts of existence." - Oswald Spengler

A second had, third rate rant sourced directly out of Henry Ford's colon.... And guess what, when Ford's DEARBORN INDEPENDENT continued to print hogwash like you are spouting; Czarist BS about the PROTOCOLS OF THE ELDERS OF ZION; and inflammatory, libelous screeds, he was sued, made to back up his bullshit in a court of law, compelled to issue a formal apology, fold his newspaper, and pay a substantial cash settlement, which the litigant in question gave in its entirety to CHARITY. Bon appetite Reinhard Heydrich, to you and your Geek Chorus of Gutless Grifters, high fiving each other while cowering behind the digital wall of a chat room, exchanging ANTIFA conspiracy theories, listening to Alex Jones--as talking this brand of dungfuck smack to any carbon based life form in the real world (Jewish or otherwise), would garner a punch in the nose. May you, like Heydrich, and other cowards and bullies, meet a similar fate.

The thing I hate is that as a white guy born in the 1980's, I personally had nothing to do with slavery or even the civil rights movement, yet I still receive scorn or at the least, mistrust from other people who were affected (or again at the least, their parents/grandparents were). Why must I (or anyone else from my generation) have to contend with the negativity that is rightly deserved for the people of the past who committed these attrocities?

Because there’s still people who hate us because of the color of our skin and our background. Most white people still reap the benefits of colored peoples work and suffering. You probably will never truly know what it’s like to be a person of color in America. Always having to work twice as hard to get a slice of the pie. And that is why POC have resentment towards white people especially to those who are ignorant to our issues because why care if it doesn’t affect you right?

White Slaves, African Masters Reviews have praised White Slaves, African Masters: An Anthology of American Barbary Captivity Narratives, a book that has revealed the slavery of North American colonists by Barbary privateers. "Some of the most popular stories in nineteenth-century America were sensational tales of whites captured and enslaved in North Africa. White Slaves, African Masters for the first time gathers together a selection of these Barbary captivity narratives, which significantly influenced early American attitudes toward race, slavery, and nationalism. Though Barbary privateers began to seize North American colonists as early as 1625, Barbary captivity narratives did not begin to flourish until after the American Revolution. During these years, stories of Barbary captivity forced the U.S. government to pay humiliating tributes to African rulers, stimulated the drive to create the U.S. Navy, and brought on America's first post-revolutionary war. These tales also were used both to justify and to vilify slavery."

Visser .Three I agree with Visser. Thee. Everyone has a dark history. My people have almost no recorded history dating back before the 18th century. We were slaughtered, raped, and our leaders were silenced. Hmong people migrated south to Laos and became highlanders only to be ruled over by the French people. (this is why a chunk Hmong people have hazel eyes and blonde hair). in 1965 a war broke out between America and North Vietnam over communism and the Americans got us involved. When the Americans lost the war, Hmong people were targeted for genocide. Women and female children were raped and killed, and men and male children were tortured and fed to the pigs. We're just like the Jewish people in history. What's also kind of a coincidence is that our culture now is very influenced by the Jewish people. I know right? crazy.

His entire message is a benefit to both the black and white working class. Seriously, he’s not blaming you for being part of the “privileged”. He’s saying that your inclusion in that group is basically pittance for what you could actually be earning if you’d only recognize that you have far more in common with working blacks than elite whites. The attacks on him however are predictably par for the course; angry poor individualistic whites who think they’re only a few steps away from being the next Trump. Enjoy that privilege because without a labor revolution, it’s the only real wealth you’re ever going to obtain. Peace.

I agree with Wise’s position that poor and working class whites share some common political interests with poor and working class minorities. Because Tim Wise in his film Wise explained the white privilege damages not only people of color but also white people. In addition to that he discussed the process providing an accessible, and powerful of introduction to the social construction of racial identities and how is the racial identities Is it a societal and institutional. Which is related to my reading and how the poor and working class whites share some common experience and similarity of disadvantage and inequality from dominate groups, dispute both groups have different of conditions, experience of prejudice and likely to suffer to effects from the discrimination and racism .

Recently I was debating a right wing conservative nutjob on this subject and he caught me off guard by saying: "Well if non-whites just stayed away from white people, wouldn't that end all white privilege?" I told him that it has already been established that people of color cannot be equal unless we force white society to let them come and live with them. I believe that every objection to someone's personal belief or ideology should be cemented in Foundation to give the reader a proper understanding and context to why the individual writing the comment is objecting to this individual's ideology or personal opinion or even their fact. So let me set a foundation. Since the moment that I was able to understand and comprehend everything around me whether that would be something basic intermediate or very complex I have always found ways to give a fair audience and understanding to quite literally anything on the basis of using what I would call critical thinking or in other words or to Simply put it or simply explain a way to think for myself and do my own proper analysis of what is presented. To put all this in simple words since I was able to understand anything and everything my father and my mother have always taught me one basic rule of life and they taught me that this one rule of life allows you to live a happier humble life. " treat all people as you would like to be treated and treat those that you admire better than you would treat yourself" Under this very simple basic understanding I have lived my life to the fullest and was always able to show True empathy and compassion towards people like myself or people that were different than me. My whole life I've been driven by the idea of learning about the differences that people have based on simple things such as culture or things like ethnicity and even religion and race. I was always compelled to show someone and everyone that is different than me appreciation by wanting to learn more about who they are where they're from what culture they have what religion they practice and any other differences. This is how I was able to make such great companionship and friendship with many people and many of these people were very radically different than me. But that was the best part of meeting a new individual that was very different than you yourself. That has always been the best part of the conversation learning about someone that is so different than you and learning about those very different differences. For the most part appreciating and loving everyone and treating everyone as an equal or even treating other people there are different than you better than you would treat yourself has always made me live a much happier life. Here's the very strange thing I have always hungered to learn about people that are different than me I would always ask questions because it was so amazing to learn about other people from different walks of life. And at the end the one thing that I would tell anyone that has been a victim of anything that includes racism Prejudice or bigotry, " don't let the ignorance of other people ever slow you down from achieving anything at all in this world, even if you need to climb a mountain but you were at a crawl and even if you slide back down a few times never give up and climb your way up to the top" I have always understood the injustice too many people across the world and I have always wished for the best for these people but the difference between me and Tim Wise is the fact that much rather unify and Unite with people through empathy and compassion and obviously understanding over Tim Wise trying to divide people with his belligerent ignorant speeches that do nothing more than divide people on top of that he makes a tremendous amount of money out of creating a divide between people. Here's an example of how I view an individual and how Tim Wise views an individual and this is the icing on the cake the cherry on top this is what proves that I'm a better man than he is. When I'm walking down the street and I see a black man walking towards me all I see is another human being walking towards me and many times I'm compelled to say hello and spark a conversation impossibly making you friend for that day. Tim Wise on the other hand if he was walking down the street and saw a black man walking towards him he sees another victim and it's very quickly finds a means of trying to express the ideology of victimhood to this individual to corrupt them to make them angry and to make life more difficult off that individual all in the same time finding ways to make money off that individual by creating that victimhood mentality in that individual's mind. See it's very simple

5:23 Wise tries to discredit that illegal immigration undermines wages. This is wrong. Illegal immigration does do so. Even Cesar Chavez himself opposed illegal immigration and supported the Wall. Certain studies have found that Mexican-Americans who have been in the USA for a prolonged period of time oppose illegal immigration the same way White Working Class do. Sure there are other reasons why workers may not be making money, but to ignore illegal immigration is a bad idea. In fact, Blacks are horribly affected by illegal immigration, probably more than Whites. Also, Obama deported more illegals than many other Presidents. It may be true that there were certain racial undertones which were there in the whole wall thing, but is it stopping any one from succeeding? No. Racism is not the cause of why Latinos and Blacks are lagging.

Hmm, this was actually, very interesting. I can see that a lot of people are taking away from this that Tim Wise is actually trying to drive a wedge, but if you get through the entire video, he is saying that the concept of white, not just white privilege, is driving a wedge between the two segregated communities. I've wondered about this myself. Why people in america identify, typically by their color and not their race. Seems odd to me as I come from an Irish family and we definitely identify as Irish first, and white second. Being I am irish and italian, I do the same. There's a Bob Dylan song that talks about this about Medger Evers: A South politician preaches to the poor white man "You got more than the blacks, don't complain You're better than them, you been born with white skin, " they explain And the Negro's name Is used, it is plain For the politician's gain As he rises to fame And the poor white remains On the caboose of the train But it ain't him to blame He's only a pawn in their game I don't necessarily know if everything Tim Wise said was true about time lines and motivations and the mention of Elites kind of gives away his motives, but there is some interesting ideas here if you are open minded enough to at least hear them. (doesn't mean you have to prescribe to them)

Someone who didn't stay out until 5 am doing sketchy shit with sketchy people. I made a change. It worked out. My friends (of all colors) are now dead, in jail, or homeless. This is no longer about color. This is about poverty. Because poverty does not discriminate. Stop building walls again to divide people. Start attacking the issue of poverty and I guarantee you these problems will be solved.

Therefore Tim Wise here has no right to call himself a white man, because he is of the Jewish race, which does not consider itself white.

I was leading a crew of people driving them a aircraft loader truck, mixing chemicals, and loading crop dusters, so yeah, it was worth more than minimum wage

Hey Tim, When I was 33 i finished a 6 yr prison bid, (for trying to stick up a gas station with my finger and failing. Then being ID'd as I was the "Only one in the area") and moved into a studio apt. In Trenton. As i was starting from scratch, I followed the advice of some pamphlets that I was given before release date, and applied for social services/assistance. Getting the Food stamps was not a difficult process, other than swallowing my pride. But i also had applied for medicare, and i learned that there was an affordable auto insurance rate, a dollar a day, specifically set up for recipients of the benefits i received, to give them the opportunity to get a vehicle legal for the road, which i thought was pretty helpful, so i brought all my paperwork in to the state operated auto insurance place in downtown Trenton, and spoke with someone, waited in the lobby area, and spoke with some of the other people waiting for their appointments, and my spirits were raised, as they all told me that they were either already receiving their dollar a day insurance, and were either there to make a payment or discuss other matters that could be handled at that location. I was told to bring back copys of all my paperwork, following day i dud, and after 35 minutes talking with one of their employees and checking all the boxes, he went in the back, did some fax or something, came back, went on to his computer, looked up at me and said, yeahhh, sorry, but looks like you dont qualify. I kept my calm, explained that i had read up on this, and i was in the same programs as everyone else in the office that already were on this insurance. No matter what, I was not qualified, he assured me. I fell into a "category" Was the last phrase he said before i had heard enough and left before i lost my head. I was also on DOC program, had to go to meetings, check in, etc, if you been through NJ system and paroled , you know the drill, until you have a job that they approve of. While other excons in the program with me were given passes to go Metal scrapping with their uncle instead of coming to programs, I had bosses i had met that would literally call my Parole officer, speak on my behalf, and attempt to get them to give me permission to go to work. One boss went so far as to say he would personally call my PO everyday I was at work and give location's. No, this just wouldn't do, for whatever reason. I had to limit my work to what i could find at nights after programs, and continue to attend senseless classes during the day about, Interview skills, social skills, and job preparation skills, which were quite unnecessary, seeing as i had no problem getting work, just permission. These classes stuck to the gameplan for 5 or 10 mins tops, then deteriorated into war stories from prison or the past lives of the other "students" in the class. While other participants were given cart blanche to show up late, leave early, smell like a weed farm when they came in,and given a pat on the butt, i was drug tested twice a week, and penalized for misses even if i had hospital paperwork. After 2 months of this, I finally popped a dirty urine and was sent back. First time. I'm not a sex offender, arsonist, or any other type of weirdo crime. Just a fucked up attempted robbery i fled from, where no one was hurt. Did I mention that I'm a White Man, and in these stories, the only one 95 percent of the time? Now you tell me, where was my "White Privilege Card" when I was the one at the bottom fighting to get back up? Where the fuck was my "Rich Whitey rescue Team" that came to scoop me outta this situation? Yeah,Please enlighten me, I'd love to hear this rationalized in your articulate perspective, Mr. Wise. Meanwhile I'm going to get a snack, cause I like snacks.

Privilege is any advantage given to a particular group. Any racist in power can give this out. Getting hired rather than that black guy because your people aren't lazy is white privilege, not getting confronted by cops who got a call on you because black people steal is white privilege, Having your life viewed as more important because white's are leaders, is white privilege, going to school and not having others constantly remind you of your blackness, is white privilege. Acknowledging this or rather racism altogether is a step in helping stop it. If people would call out injustice when they see it instead of going along with it, we could make improvements. Imagine being judged for every stupid thing white people have ever done and that people have a preconceived notion of you based on that. Oh that white guy cant go to this school cause you know they like to shoot up places. Keep an eye on that white dude, they don't like paying taxes. It becomes tiresome having to prove yourself as not what everyone assumes you are. I don't expect for anyone to feel guilty for anything they haven't done, but if you see your brother getting mistreated, don't turn your head, stand with him. I've been with a black guy saying things about white people as a whole and that didn't sit right with me, and I let him know that.

There are zero legal rights for whites that blacks don't also have (but blacks do have legal rights that whites don't #blackprivilege ). "privilege - a special right, *advantage*, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people." Every race has advantages in certain circumstances so there would also be a black privilege and every other race too, why not just save the trouble and just treat people on a case by case basis? "privilege - a special right, advantage, or *immunity* granted or available only to a particular person or group of people." What are white people immune to? Bullets? Fire? Also could you please call out specifically what I said that was racist and explain why. Blacks can run fast. Asians are smart. Jews hoard all the worlds gold. Whites have privilege. How can you not get how this is racist? "Because I never said anything negative about white people and acknowledging the existence of racism doesn't make someone a racist." I have no problem acknowledging racism after all that is why i'm talking to you. Lastly, stop trying to move the goalpost by using white privilege interchangeably with racism in a retarded attempt to straw-man me. You and i both know that our disagreement is about the concept of white privilege not racism.

It's dead people's baggage... STOP CARRYING IT." My hope for the future of THE HUMAN RACE has been rattled. Divide and conquer, indeed. I understand what you are saying but young whites don't take criticism to white supremacy politics personal. Using fear and hate to divide and conquer the masses is as old as America itself. Young whites are idealistic, like people of color. All they see is a desire to put right over wrong. They like to see people put over corporate greed and want to push for freedom, equality and justice for all people. It will be young whites collaborating with people of color that will eventually take dark money out of politics so we can have a country that is of by and for the people. Politicians will have to win on ideas, not demonizing minorities to galvanize the white vote, only to hand the country over to Oligarchy rule.
