Tim Wise on Race, Crime, and the Politics of Fear in America

Colorado Black Women for Political Action hosted Tim Wise at the University of Denver on November 9, 2017. The capacity audience was presented with a straight-forward discussion on Race, Crime and the Politics of Fear in America.
Wise is among the most prominent anti-racist writers and educators in the United States. He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states, on over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the country.

You have only tap danced upon the tip of the iceberg with this presentation. You have no idea how yours is the typical response from those who swear they have "got it" after a drop of bitter medicine. Yet you are actually no where near "it". The historical context of 'Whiteness', which did not exist prior to 1861, is imperative for you to understand if you merely want to just scratch at the surface of this perverse insanity of 'White' supremacy. It is great that you have approached the door and cracked it. Yet deep emotional and Spiritual work will be required for you to open the door and step through upon the Path. Blessings and good luck to you going forward.

It's interesting how a group of people can be racist, hateful since the 1600s and can say to there victims we've done unthinkable things to your people for years and years But now that there are Blacks who hate us for what we've done that makes your 13% of the population so much more racist then we ever were!!! In case one hasn't noticed lying in today's society is done as easily as taking a breath. People continuing to pretend like racism is gone isn't living in reality But in fact this generation is continuing the race hate onto the next generation and I have no doubts the generation after that one.

Well it depends on how you wish to define the term "race". Ashkenazim almost certainly have different genes that account for their higher average IQ (verbal and mathematical). They (around 2% of the population) are the most over represented ethnic group in the West. I myself probably wouldn't see the logic in classifying them as a distinct "race". So more like .... "overwhelmingly white", but something aint quite right

Yeshua (Jesus) was a Jew, too. Are you disavowing him? Tell me exactly what "being white" means? It really has no cachet outside of places where there are majority whites. Which goes a long way in explaining why whites feel so uncomfortable around people when they're not in the majority. So I know that you don't even believe your own bullshit, because if you did, you wouldn't have that fear. But yet you do. It's the same fear that causes a white cop to shoot a Black man even when he's unarmed; the same fear that motivates lynch mobs to murder Black men, women and children, pose in pictures with the burned and charred corpses but too cowardly to admit the same when confronted about it. I know who you are, and worse yet, YOU know who you are, too.

  • @jankow815

Dr. Wise raises some interesting points and I generally agree with his broad themes of seeking ways in increase social and cultural equity and to find solutions to re-enfranchise groups that have been marginalized historically. However, his arguments seem to push a bit toward the old "colonialist" mindset in two disturbing ways. First, this speech, while much tongue in cheek, is incredibly patronizing to many white communities. It portrays the general American white populous as a dichotomy of the ideologically pure white community and the impure white community, the later being those who are unable to grapple with simple truths and continually hold the system back. This feels very akin to the European view of the African continent in the 1600s through 1900s. Perhaps the goal is shock value as there is a lot of truth in the fact that a history of lower rights do leave victimized groups in a lower socio-economic rung and thus limit mobility for generations. The tone just seems far more condescending than necessary. But second, and perhaps more troubling for me, is placing the onus for change on the white community. While there is an important truth in majority groups being useful in restructuring systems, I think the thought leaders of this restructure should be from communities that experience or feel pressure from these inequities. I also have a few more minor issues with stats that are used without proper context and with pre-packaged conclusions. For example, the point about wealth disparities between races uses a univariant analysis (10:04). This a poor practice from a social science perspective as there are other contributing factors, such as socio-economic class, that tend to be more explanatory when considering wealth distribution. Of course, this does not mean there isn't an issue or that black families make up a disproportionate share of the lower socio-economic class due largely to historic racial treatment. But this drastically reduces the picture and potential overlooks the best policy option. Further it seems academically unwise to posit that higher rates of white "despair" indicators (alcohol, drug abuse, self abuse, etc 55:58) are due to skin color perspectives through a lens of oppression. This may be part of the issue, but it seems to leave out other contributing factors like socio-economic status or continual rhetoric that (justly) fights for the rights of other groups but might leave a working-class group feeling marginalized. Even if marginalization is only a perception, that will not make it any less true to the group feeling it. Please comment if you believe I misunderstood any of these points, and I would love suggestions of other thinkers who might articulate these ideas in a different manner.

Well said! I agree he "places the onus for change on the White community", and that's disturbing AND demeaning. I have many White friends, but I don't need some wannabe-White-savior like Tim Wise. I prefer the quote, "There is no fate but what we make." Certainly I've experienced racism, but ultimately my life is MINE. And I've lived in enough horrible places to be grateful that I'm an American citizen. America obviously isn't perfect, but it's a free country where a woman like me has the same legal rights as any White man. I know an elderly Black woman who marched with Martin Luther King in the Civil Rights marches of the 1960s, and she gave me a button that was popular back then: _LOVE SEES NO COLOR_ Nowadays, ironically, that's considered "racist" or "race erasure". And women like me are called "marginalized" and "victims" by Marxist collectivists like Tim Wise, who can't see beyond my skin color, who can't see my character because he's too blinded by his Grievance Glasses through which _EVERYTHING_ is a Soviet-style battle between The Oppressors and The Oppressed. It's really sad, it's like we've gone backwards in progress. Harvard even held a segregated graduation ceremony for Black students; and many universities are creating increasingly segregated study spaces where only certain races are allowed. I want people to judge me for who I am, for my character, not just look at me and think I'm some hapless, helpless "marginalized victim of White supremacy". Until people can look beyond race and can judge people by character and ethics, racism will continue to divide nations and curtail progress. We should be working together on making the world better in whatever ways we can, not splitting people apart along color lines.

Third verse of The National Anthem: And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion A home and a Country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I was raised to believe people were generally good to others. The process of realizing the truth nearly killed me. Would it have been better if I had been raised to believe people are generally bad? I'm not sure. Are we sure these "deaths of despair" didn't already exist in the black community, and the great recession simply couldn't increase what was already there?

The difference between Colin and Tim Wise and those who of us who disagree with them is that we love this country and are willing to sacrifice what it takes to climb the social ladder. Enough with the excuses and anecdotal evidence, blacks and my Hispanic people need to stop complaining and whatever they they do, stay away from this victimhood mentality sold by Tim.

I used to really enjoy hearing this guy speak. But now it seems like he's trying to be belligerent and sniping at anything he can to put white people down and hold them accountable for everything that happens. He acts like he's trying to identify with a very specific left wing group and the message im hearing from him these days is if you're not in agreement with everything he says then you're the bad guy. He has some great points and does a great deal to wake people up to the reality of our social situation. He's doing more attacking than trying to sway people to the light of our situation. He didn't do that back in the day. He was more aware of the importance of meeting people on respectful and neutral ground and focusing on talking and teaching people. If you attack people they will never listen. So basically at this point he had become lazy. His messages are now intended for the people that have already set their minds in the same direction. I'll still listen to him but id love to hear more of the way he used to be. He was very inspiring to me.

Free black men had to do slave patrol as well. I can get behind a lot of what this man is saying. However he shouldn't just give out some info without giving out the rest. Let's not tell half truths here. If your going to tell it then tell the whole. This is the problem we have today. We tell half truths without telling people the rest of the story. And people jump all over the half truth like it's gospel. Then when another person tells them the whole truth, that person must be a liar.
