    I just love the way Kathy looks at Tim. This took place literally weeks before he went to see Jesus, and Kathy is so poised and full of God’s presence comforting and supporting Tim. What an insightful finding on Resurrection by Kathy! Yes, resurrection is verifiable and we sure will see Tim again. Thank you Kathy for being a such a model of a spouse who truly plays the Jesus role. My prayers will never stop for you.

    I worked for a time on the newsletter with Kathy back in the earlier days of Redeemer. A treasured memory is having pizza one afternoon with Tim and Kathy and talking about cinema. Two of the smartest thinkers in the Faith I've had the good fortune to know. Tim passing is a temporary victory for the darkness. To make such headway in NYC in the last decades is an extraordinary accomplishment. RIP Tim. And bless Kathy in her sorrow.

    Until I began hearing the love and nature of God and the cost of having His Son crucified for me, I was hopeless. After hearing Tim over many years I experienced Jesus’ resurrection in my own life. I experienced my own dying with Him on the Cross to a new birth. Through His Sacrificial Grace I had to look deeply into my soul, which I did, and I knew it had to be Jesus alone. As Paul proclaimed, “Wretched man.” Tim, praying for you and Kathy and thank you giving me over many years His living Word toward the empty tomb so I could get in and experience life out of it- life with Jesus rich gift-Himself. Looking forward to more richness of your messages after your treatment ✝️🙏🙏

    With deep respect, I would humbly suggest that the title might be a tiny bit misleading. Tim is not suggesting that if you cannot historically verify things that our faith is meaningless. There will always be a Bart Ehrman or someone lofting theories that the resurrection did not occur. In those moments, I would encourage my brothers and sisters, not to lose faith. There is objective truth, and God can show you this, even if you don’t have a particular book on hand to refute some historical theory.

    Sorry to say this but the title of this video has not been put right. The resurrection as historically true and historically verifiable are two different things. So putting historical verification of the resurrection should not been put into the level of whether our faith is meaningless if one cannot prove it. One can still believe in Christ when one is not able to historically prove the resurrection, because Christ's resurrection is historically true.

    However the stone being rolled away was 100% evidence for the disciples. God in His wisdom and compassion revealed the resurrection this way to the disciples as they needed to know, beyond a shadow of doubt, that Jesus was indeed alive. They were dejected, confused and living in fear of the Roman authorities and the political forces that crucified Jesus at that time in history.

  • @ca7998

    @ca7998

    Works don't save. Faith doesn't save. Jesus saves. It's when we embrace, by faith/wholehearted trust, the One who lived the life we should've lived, died the death we should've died, and rose from the grave authenticating He is who He said He was, that we are saved. This faith/wholehearted trust is what brings us INTO relationship with Christ and the life we live afterwards flows OUT OF that relationship. Our changed lives are merely fruit, not the root. An apple tree is an apple tree because of what it is, not because of what it produces. Nevertheless, we would be right to suspect something is wrong if the apple tree never produces apples. This is what James is getting at when he writes that faith without works is dead. The works don't make the faith come alive, they demonstrate that the faith we profess is true and living faith in our true and living Savior. Jesus tells us that, if we love Him, we will keep His commandments, not that we must keep His commandments in order to love Him. Likewise, Paul tells us to work OUT our salvation, not work FOR our salvation, and goes on to say that it is God who is at work within us to help combat the sinful notion that we can take any credit.

    @@JohnMark61355 I'm afraid you have an axe to grind that I don't. I stand in full agreement with the five solas of the Reformation. We are saved by grace alone (hence my last sentence which combats the mistaken notion that we can take any credit for our salvation), through faith alone (hence my emphasis on faith/wholehearted trust), in Christ alone (our union with Him is where our salvation is and can only be found), and it's all to the glory of God alone, according to Scripture alone. I literally never engage in comment sections for this very reason. You want to play a game of "gotcha" instead of letting the Scriptures (all of them) speak for themselves. If this comment doesn't help you see where I'm coming from, I'll gladly delete both.

  • @JohnMark61355

    @JohnMark61355

    @@ca7998 I am not playing anything. I am genuinely curious about this matter. Many Christians now, and virtually all Christians before the Reformation, did not belief that “faith alone” saves. There are many passages in Scripture that support “faith alone,” but many do not. It seems to me, and I thought this is what you were saying, that faith is not faith unless it manifests in obedience to God’s will and Jesus’ example through our actions. We can never be saved by our works, but as James said, Faith without works is dead.

  • @ca7998

    @ca7998

    Жыл бұрын

    @@JohnMark61355 I apologize if I misunderstood your intentions. I am clearly jaded when it comes to how most comment sections devolve so quickly. If I were to want to be more precise in articulating my understanding of what James says, I would say that James in no way contradicts Paul or Jesus or any other teaching of Scripture. He is making the point that saving faith (the faith I mentioned in my first reply that puts its wholehearted trust in Christ's finished work on behalf of His people and unites us to Him) is a faith which will inevitably produce works. It seems that these conversations hit a roadblock when this is missed. The works are not the faith that unites us to Christ. The works are the evidence/fruit of the fact that we have been united to Christ by faith. It is not right to say that works are necessary to be saved, but I think it is right to say they are inevitable for those who are saved. Also, I think your sweeping generalization of all of Christendom is inaccurate, but regardless of where the church historically got it right or wrong is of secondary importance relative to what the whole counsel of God teaches. In my view (as stated in my last reply), the Reformation sought to bring together the teachings of Christ, the Apostles, and the Prophets in ways that many in the early church failed to. Even still, the Reformers did not bring anything new to the table, other than a willingness to submit to the teachings of Scripture as their ultimate authority, even if they made many missteps along the way. As a matter of courtesy, I want you to know I won't be responding any further, but I will leave my comments to give you or anyone else who might be interested an opportunity to consider them. You do not have to be reformed to be saved, but you do have to be united to Christ and the Scriptural path to such union is through faith. As the angel announced to Joseph, "You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."

    Historical evidence can be helpful for apologetics or other educational purposes, but it is never what our faith stands or falls on. God reveals the Good News through scripture to the elect, and no amount of logic or evidence will ever be enough to convince those outside the covenant.

    right, they never said that wasn't true. It seems you're holding scripture outside of the category of evidence by not seeing that it is historical documentation. All of scripture is both inspired and historical. Like Kathy said, it happened in space and time. If it didn't actually happen in space and time then it's like every other religion. God making it happen in space and time is the significance of it being historical evidence and helps believers to see it as true, when God reveals it to be true to them. Both/And.

    @@hewziheng I’m aware of the minimal facts argument and I find it to be a very robust proof for the crucifixion event…but I don’t see a pathway for the resurrection to be transplanted from the realm of belief to the realm of history via any sort of proof or mechanism of logical deduction. Why would we profess belief if we could go so far as to profess knowledge instead?

    This is so sad - don’t you understand the very simple fact that it is just not possible for one to conclude causes from the effects, or, to put it differently… one cannot infer a Universal (such as the Truth) from the particulars (or the ‘facts’) Please understand that there is a fundamental difference between what IS TRUE and what TRUTH IS! And it is only possible for us to ever know if anything is true if the Truth (with a capital ‘T’) discloses (or reveals) the verisimilitude of something to us! Whenever we insist upon trying to determine the verity of something (ANYTHING!) by interpreting the ‘facts’ (and the ‘facts’ are ALWAYS interpreted - the ‘facts’ never ‘speak for themselves’ - that commits the error of reification), necessarily implies that we presume an epistemic ‘authority’ that subordinates the Truth to something of lesser epistemic standing… As THE TRUTH (not merely true for any reason we may propose), God and His revelation provides us with the necessary preconditions of intelligibility… only by thy light are we able to know (actually know, with apodictic certainty) if anything is actually true - anything apart from God and His revelation (which speaks for itself and is not open to our subjective interpretation), always reduces to foolishness (Prv 26:4,5)

    @@theojones2593 One of the many challenges we face in the church Theo, is the fact that, while those who profess Christ, believe IN God (and I’m really not sure what that even means), they do not believe God! In other words, their authority is not God and His revelation, but ‘historical evidence’ as interpreted by the individual - the individual now holds himself out as the measure of what is true and what is not! Now, philosophically, that’s a horribly self-refuting position to assume… Moreover, it really subordinates God and His revelation (what ought to serve as the Christian’s ultimate authority on ALL things, not only things of a religious nature, but on ALL things) to the judgement of man, when God is true and man is the Fool (Rom 3:4)…

    Even if the resurrection is verified, and it’s not it’s the opposite, it proves nothing because everything about Jesus violates God’s explicit word in the Hebrew Scriptures. God outlawed vicarious atonement, God outlawed human sacrifice, God outlawed any intermediary between him and humans, God is One - no trinity, God will never be a human, no human is divine or should be deified or worshipped, nothing except God and God alone is to be worshipped, God’s Torah is enteral, binding forever, never to be added to or taken away from, never expires, never “fulfilled”, never abrogated, is perfect, etc. Jesus and then Christianity is the inverse of God’s direct instructions and is nothing more than a false religion. Deut 13 defines false religion and give two steps for how false religions will operate: 1) sensational phenomena - dreams, visions, prophecies, signs, miracles, wonders; 2) those sensational phenomena are used to turn people away from the Torah and God’s specific instructions at Sinai. Step 1 is Jesus, step 2 is Paul the architect of Christianity.

    Unfortunately, the resurrection is not historically verifiable and it does not need to be proved. The Bible is our axiom and the Bible is only proof we need that the resurrection actually happened. Historiography is constantly changing. God's written word is forever the objective word of God. Psalm 119:89.

    They're talking about how all of scripture is both inspired and historical. Like Kathy said, it happened in space and time. If it didn't actually happen in space and time then it's like every other religion, you would believe in it based on either false truths or a subjective experience. God making it happen in space and time is the significance of it being historical evidence and helps believers to see it as true objectively, when God reveals it to be true to them subjectively. Both/And.

    @Cody Fish No. The Bible is an historical book. It stands alone as completely sufficient to tell us objective history, geography, etc. The idea that we need to provide e the Nible from ever changing historiography that is not I spired, inerrant or infallible is a capitulation to evidentialism and empiricism. The Bible is special revelation from God and needs no evidence to support it. We are happy when the Bie gets external support but it is not necessary whatsoever. The proof of the historical resurrection is the Bible.

    _"God worked it out so we didn't have to take the resurrection just on trust. He actually made it verifiable!"_ Uhm, no, he didn't. Not at all. All he gave us are stories that were written decades later, in another language, in another land, in another culture, by people who had never met Jesus. Their writings are not considered accurate history, in fact they weren't writing as historians at all, they were writing with the purpose of confirming the faith of fellow believers. So they sprinkled in a lot of unverifiable supernatural events to lend credence to the idea that Jesus was divine, and then had Jesus resurrect and pretty quickly disappear into the stratosphere, never to be seen again. If the "resurrected" Jesus had actually been God, then instead of ascending to heaven, a common claim made for famous people in those times, he would have stuck around, making the claim verifiable by his presence. Imagine how much better and more verifiable it would be if Jesus was still traveling the world 2,000 years later! Visiting different countries, writing his own Bible, preaching his own personalized message to the people, explaining what he really meant back in the day, showing that he had a magical body that could shape-shift, walk through walls, walk on water, heal the sick, raise the dead and solve world hunger with a few schoolchildren's lunches. _Then_ we could actually say it's verifiable. If he were really eternal, this wouldn't have cost him anything. "A thousand years is as one day, and one day is as a thousand years." Having him stick around for two more days doesn't seem much to ask for. But he didn't do that, so all we're left with is a bunch of far-fetched stories that a kindergartner can see through. Except for people who have already made up their minds and _want_ to believe---they naturally find the stories extremely "verifiable."
