Tim Ho Wan’s Dim Sum Is One of the Cheapest Michelin-Starred Meals in the World - Cult Following

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

When Tim Ho Wan opened in Manhattan last year, the lines were insane, often stretching around the block. Why the fuss? The original location of this Hong Kong-based dim sum chain was the cheapest restaurant in the world to win a Michelin Star - and it’s beloved across Asia.
Tim Ho Wan serves classics as well as less-familiar dishes, from chicken feet to har gow and lo mai gai. But unlike many NYC dim sum restaurants, at Tim Ho Wan, there are no servers wheeling carts of food. It’s menu ordering only.
In this episode of Cult Following, host Serena Dai picks up a friend and stops by the first New York City branch of this Chinese spot to see if these dumplings are worth the wait.
Eater is the one-stop-shop for food and restaurant obsessives across the country. With features, explainers, animations, recipes, and more - it’s the most indulgent food content around. So get hungry.

I wish they would have went more into detail, how much does the food cost, how does it taste like (ingredients etc), or just what is the texture of the food compared to other places. They just ate and said it was good without giving me any further information. Try to implement that next time and it should lift the quality of the video by alot atleast for me.

Thanks for the constructive criticism. A lot gets edited out because nobody wants to look at my fat face eat and talk for any length of time. Here are some short observations though: Over a month after eating it, the dish that I remember the most is the French Toast. I had no idea what to expect with such a strange name, but when I ate it I realized it was just a deep fried Dan Ta (egg custard tart)!! It was really good and I'd highly recommend it to anyone. The fried items in general are some of the best I've had at NYC dim sum. The texture is crisp yet light - a major benefit to an order-off-the-menu system vs the cart system. The shrimp inside the chang fun was firm and fresh, rather than soft or soggy as I've experienced at many other restaurants. Though the flavor was great, the outside rice noodle itself was not as plaint and freshly-steamed as I wished - perhaps because we waited too long to eat it? The meat inside the Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf was really juicy. I've eaten versions where the chicken is dried out or stringy...even then it's still one of my favorite dishes. Let me know if you had any more questions and I'd be happy to answer them!

First: sorry for the late reply Second: I think you couldnt be more wrong when you say people dont want to look at your 'fat face eat and talk' . These kind of food experience/informative videos live of a few key components. People want to see tasty or interesting food, which is a given since you look for that specifically before you even start filming, lets call that the core content. Now its all up to you to fill in the blanks, texture, consistency, taste, etc + by far the most important thing your personal experience. A video is a visual medium so you need to work their imagination and feed them the information they cant gain from watching alone, tell them the things you wrote in the comment above: how does it taste? why does it taste so good? is it crunchy or soggy? do you like it that way? and if you do tell them why. Let the viewers experience the food through you, share your excitment or disappointment . Doing this will give the video more liveliness and relatability and that is what makes a viewer hungry watching a yt video. So long story short , dont shy away from giving the episode more of an personal spin, you wont take away from the food on the contrary you will add alot more information and emotion to it. People will hate your 'fat face' ( your words not mine :P ) no matter what you do (its the internet) but if you give them a bit more of your personal touch the viewers that enjoy your content and love your opinion will grow at a much higher rate than the haters because nobody can actually hate on informative honest and authentic content/opinions. I hope i got my point across, im not a native speaker so i might have weird, wrong and overcomplicated sentence structures but that is my honest opinion, which is loosely based on my experience with food based video content on youtube (as a viewer) and their overall success over the last 1-2years.

@brozors The skin was tougher and chewier than other chicken feet I've had, but the cartilage and meat inside was tender enough to eat. Could have been cooked longer for softness. The flavor was really good though. Most chicken feet I've had are flavored with star anise, soy sauce and oyster sauce and take on a sweet and savory taste profile, but in this one the soy and sweetness were much more subtle and you could taste more of an herbal, almost marine, flavor. Honestly though it could have just been the claims of bao yu (abalone) sauce tricking my brain, so you'll have to try for yourself!

note: I'm a dim sum snob and as a former San Francisco food journalist living in Hong Kong for past 8 years 🇭🇰 i Went to original Tim ho wan in hk. Dim sum is nominal but their branding and back story is solid. Chef comes from big time five star hotel to open hole in the wall in hk. Few more side notes: hold the chopstick higher as a sign you're not a rookie. Also sign of good dim sum is temperate arriving piping hot as well as noticing knife skills. As for the review, try Lucas style which is describing the ambiance, flavours of each dish, and why you would go back or not. Thanks for the review either way. I'm Asianfoodnerd on Instagram.

I went to Tim Ho Wan in Hanoi, Vietnam and it was ridiculously expensive and portion size was small comparing to New York. I guess mainly because of the location. The food was alright comparing to other dim sum restaurant accross Asia. Howeverc the charsiu dumpling was extraordinary.

As someone that just went to Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong, it's definitely very good dim sum. I'm from Vancouver and if our best dim sum is a 8, Tim Ho Wan is a 9. Everything is good but nothing is mind blowing. The BBQ pork buns are amazing...but I also didn't have to line up. A 3-hour line would change my mind. Also, even some of the Chinesesiest of Chinese people have poor chopsticks skills.

Dim Sum/ Yum Cha is the best with the food carts. It is part of the experience. You simply point to what you think looks good. You eat with your eyes first. It's like going to a brazilian bbq, you have them cut the meat off the skewers in front of you. You do not place an order for it.

pbsing truthfully though food cart dim sum places are decreasing more and more, i went to Guangzhou this year and the majority of places i went to did dimsum to order. they don't have to pay as much staff to push the carts around it's more of a hold out of american cantonese communities and their banquet halls, which is interesting because now of you want to find super classic cantonese food, you go to san francisco (not that china doesn't have classic food, but their dimsuk and other food are becoming more modernized)

  • @bobabeast

To be honest, I really enjoy both experiences. When I have tourist friends come to town they always want to go to a cart place (for the experience, they say!!), and I find myself running around the whole restaurant grabbing whatever looks fresh and delicious because those items sometimes take too long to get to where I am seated (or don't make it at all). It's stressful, but also good because I can be my own quality control and determine the pacing of the food. Sometimes though, it's just nice to be able to sit back, order off the menu, and enjoy dim sum with your friends without worrying about the next cart coming around. To each their own!

Why did they eat chicken feet with their hands? We normally eat with chopsticks to avoid the mess from the sauce and stuff.

Go to Dim Sum Square in Sheung Wan next time you're in Hong Kong. Then you'll see what real delicious dim sum is. Tim Ho Wan doesn't even come close.

Sorry, you guys really didn't do your research on what made Tim Ho Wan popular. Freakin BBQ Pineapple Bun should have been one of the first dishes to try. And bad hosts being unknowledgeable about the food itself.

I've been to Tim Ho Wan in NYC. It's like other dim sum parlors where some dishes are good and some are meh. Mixed bag. The roast pork buns are a tad too sweet for me. Just my preference. Sui Mai's were too small, not the best that I have had. Law Mei Fan is also okay. I have had better Law Mei Fan in queens. Not worth hours of waiting.

Okay, to be perfectly clear, Tim Ho Wan does not have ANY MICHELIN STARS! Just because a restaurant was awarded a star doesn't mean any subsequent restaurants the owners open has that star. The fact that the NYC location they were in does not have a star, when NYC is evaluated by the Michelin guide is telling

Everyone hates her because she doesn't have the prettiest face. Her lips smirk and make it seem like she's disgusted or unhappy with the experience. I think people are subconsciously putting these negative feelings about her, not so much her research or her comments.
