Tim has just acquired a new toy - a Tesla Coil!
It produces high voltages at low currents, and it will discharge into the air, producing amazing sparks.
You can play special square wave music from your mobile phone, and it will spark in time with the music.
And if you hold the two wires from an LED close to the sparking, you will see the LED light up!
Not quite magic, but nearly!
Lots of information about Tesla Coils on Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_coil
PS This is an item from Tim's collection. It is not an item we sell.

Tim is electrifying as usual.
I love how Tim being so quiet in this gives us a sense of just how loud that thing is.

Pretty sure the mic picks up the electrical sound better than voice, might be some electrical interference going on too. I could be wrong, but I dont think I am.

@@snoosh00 its not really either but it isn't as black and white as the coil being that much louder either, whats going on is that the compressor they have on his lavalier mic has a longer release time, so the amount of time it takes to turn the volume back up after turning it down in respond to a loud noise isn't instant. Its not as extreme in this video, probably because the abundance of loud noises would make it really jarring, but in various Grand Illusions videos you can more easily hear tim's voice smoothly go from quiet to normal volume after a sudden loud noise i could also be wrong but i work in a recording studio so i hope for my own sake that im not lol
I'd never heard the two-verse version of the Happy Birthday song before, in which (as in this case) the first verse doesn't end on the tonic, so that you are led to expect another verse.

@@topherthe11th23 although disputed, Sisters Patty & Mildred Hill are credited as composers of the song in 1893. Somehow Warner Chappell Music had the copyright until 2015 and meticulously guarded over any use in the public space with numerous lawsuits until it fell in public domain, so for these reasons little variations may have been added

@FenceThis I sincerely doubt that where the use of the verse as I know it would get slapped down by a copyright claim, that you could add a preceding verse and change only a note or two, followed by the entire copyrighted verse, and that that would then prevent the copyright claim. But thank you for your fuller explanation that's not just "for copyright reasons".
Such a pleasant surprise to find out that this is NOT about cars.

So could they use Tesla arcs in public theaters to detect if anyone hasn't turned off their phone? Or at least jam them so that they do not work?
Lovely performance! That must have been a pain to all recording equipment in the vicinity ;-)
Very well Mr Tim.

Well, teslas labatory came up with it, he took the credit because he was the head of the department, more credit should have been given to Elihu Thomson, the actual inventor

Not sure Tesla's lavatory was the place for this sort of experimental device, Elihu Thomson (British Thomson Huston Co) was an inventive chap and like Edison and Tesla 'shared' idea's. He is not written about much but then again few knew of Tesla twenty years ago. As to who invented the Tesla coil well that was Tesla, Elihu had his own whilst Marconi put others inventions into boxes the user must not open. Thanks for reminding us of Elihu. PS Tim it looks like you have an arc developing in your sparky box electronics.

@@WOFFY-qc9te actually I think the original inventor was Henry Rowland, the device as it stands now is largely thanks to Elihu 🙈 thanks for spotting the typo!

@@phonotical Interesting I will look him up, as for who invented what I think it is more who could understand and make good use of resonant induction and tuned circuits, Tesla understood tuning. Marconi did as well but also knew who would build kit. Hertz however understood be did not seem to build much. I think I would enjoy a dinner with these chaps, Edison can stay at home.
See how the serfs work the ground…
Lets hear it for Tim and Tesla the first brings us free fun the other wanted to give the world free electricity.
