I don't think he was underrated. He was just a silent killer. He kept his head down and went straight to work on the court. No trash talk, no flashy moves, no flopping, no crying to official's. The one time my Knicks didn't have to worry about Jordan to reach the finals, Duncan and the Spurs obliterated them but gave them a pitty 1 game win that Allen Houston showed up like Jason Tatum this year playoffs and collapse in the finals.

@@Peakfreud I would accept that if I wasn't hearing for YEARS how Kawhi and Tim Duncan were products of the Spurs system. Kawhi did leave, but they had Derozan (a guy who conveniently was an all nba player the year after and the year before joining the Spurs) and Aldridge (a really talented under the radar PF). Popovich couldn't get them to win two games in the 1st rnd when they even made the playoffs. Tim Duncan and (2 a lesser degree) Kawhi were the Spurs system and its not a coincidence that after losing the Goat PF and a top 3 player at the time the Spurs immediately became mediocre.

Thank you Nick Wright, for your incredibly accurate analysis on Tim Duncan. -His scoring numbers are hurt by the fact that his prime came in perhaps the slowest paced era in NBA history, per 36 minutes he averages just 3 fewer points for his career than Wilt does, and his averages rise come playoff time in that department. -He’s one of the greatest rebounders ever. -He’s super underrated as a passer, especially in later years, his passing was a massive part of the Spurs playing what is regarded as the most aesthetically pleasing form of basketball ever in the 2014 season. -I’d say he’s the 3rd greatest defender ever, only behind Russell and Hakeem. Was as smart as anyone, was laterally very quick in his prime to the point that he could guard the perimeter in an increasingly perimeter heavy sport, and his rim protection spearheaded the greatest defensive dynasty ever other than Russell’s Celtics. During Duncan’s prime, from 98-09, the league average DRTG was 105.1. The Spurs in that time? 99.2 DRTG, just south of 6 points better than league average, including 11 seasons with a rDRTG of -4 or better, typically considered the benchmark for a historic defense. Duncan not winning a DPOY is criminal, I’d say he deserved the award in 01, 04, and 07 respectively. -His resume is ridiculous, as Nick pointed out. -As a leader, culture setter, and teammate, he’s arguably the greatest ever. Look at the Spurs before Duncan, a team that could never get over the hump, and since he’s left, they’ve progressively gotten worse and further and further away from the model of the NBA they were for oh so long. He’s got quite the playoff resume as Nick pointed out, and there are legit arguments he could’ve won finals MVP in both 07 and 14, on top of the 3 he already has (although Manu had a case to win in 05 as well). Finally, while Duncan did have very good teammates for a majority of his career, I believe they’ve been overstated with time. He won his first 4 titles without an All NBA player, won the 05 and 07 titles without a “top 75” player, and from 2001-2004, after David Robinson’s prime had ended and before Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker’s primes began, the Spurs led the NBA in wins, Duncan won B2B MVPs and had maybe the greatest playoff run in NBA history in 2003 en route to winning his 2nd championship. You could very easily reverse 3 plays: Derek Fisher’s miracle shot in game 5 of the 2004 WCSF, Manu’s foul on Dirk in game 7 of the 2006 WCSF, and Ray Allen’s shot in game 6 of the 2013 finals, and Duncan could very well have 8 rings and be considered the GOAT right now. Still, I firmly believe he’s one of the 7 greatest players ever and isn’t brought up enough in that conversation because he wasn’t flashy, played in a small market, and was quiet.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Duncan was an all time defender and franchise anchor. Every year 50 wins, he won 3 titles in a 5 year span and 4 in 8 years, and the fact that they were a great defensive team virtually every year even with a revolving door of personnel and coaches is a testament to how dominant he was defensively. Have no idea why he doesn't have a DPOY but regardless he's one of the greatest defensive players of the last 50-60 years and the greatest PF ever by a good margin.

Huge Spurs fan here, I grew up idolizing this man. This is a bit of a read but I hope it helps people appreciate the kind of player Tim Duncan was. I remember in 2010-2011, the Spurs started the first half of the season on a 70+ win pace. After a couple of seasons of relative mediocrity, I was so hopeful the Spurs would win the championship again. As the season wore on, the Spurs had so many key injuries to the team, and even though they ended up as the No. 1 seed in the West, they got beat up by the 8 seed "grit-n-grind" Grizzles, and I was crushed. The Spurs looked old and slow, beat up and injured. Their play style seemed increasingly stagnant and outdated. I remember thinking, "This is the last best chance we had in the Tim Duncan era." You can imagine how amazing it was to see the Spurs begin a renaissance starting in 2011-2012, after acquiring Kawhi Leonard and with Pop embracing a new playing style. That 2012 Spurs team was not only good, but dominant. They won the last 10 games of the regular season, and the first 10 games of the playoffs. 20 straight games! Even though they eventually lost in the WCF, I knew these Spurs were championship material. To start the 2012-2013 season, Tim Duncan was visibly in the best shape he had been in years, looking slimmer and more agile, sharp and focused. By the end of the season, he made First Team All-NBA, at the age of 37! And if you saw his game, you couldn't help but be in awe of his mastery of the fundamentals, his control of the flow and pace of the game, his basketball IQ, top-notch defense and team play. He was the whole package, that late into his career, routinely making far younger and more athletic big men look silly in the process. In the first half of Game 6 of the NBA Finals, he put up 25 points on 10-12 FG, finishing with 30 PTS and 17 REB. It was a gusty all-time performance for the old man. If not for one shot, he would have had a 4th Finals MVP, beating a peak Lebron James and Miami Heat, all at age 37. He would probably be a place or two up the GOAT conversation. In 2014, maybe he wasn't as dominant, but was no less important. His complete embrace of an egalitarian motion offense, and his willingness to play a high level role for the Spurs, being the best player on the court when he needed to be, was nothing short of amazing. After hitting a clutch basket in OT to close out the OKC Thunder in the WCF, he boldly predicted in his post game interview, "We'll do it this time". He KNEW that this Spurs team was going to bring home the title, and they did, with the most lopsided margin-of-victory in NBA Finals history! If you think of the type of team the Spurs were in 1999 or 2003, compared to how they played in 2014, it was a world of difference. And yet, Tim Duncan was just as key as ever, accepting the evolution of his game and that of the league as a whole, coming out on top at the end. How many all time greats can we say the same thing for? Even in 2015 and 2016, the Spurs were there, competing for the NBA title, even as the reins of the team were being handed to Kawhi Leonard. It's very telling, that even in the last year of Tim Duncan's career, the Spurs won 67 games, a franchise record, with Tim Duncan still being a defensive anchor helping his team achieve new heights. We all know Tim Duncan is an all-time player, and in his peak was an unstoppable force on the court rivaled by few. But for me, it's his consistency after so many years, the dedication to his craft, the trust he had in his coaches and teammates, and the selfless sacrifices he made to elevate himself and those around him, even in the last stages of his career, that sets him apart, and makes him a transcendent once in a lifetime player, in the mold of Bill Russell.

The best power forward of all time. Shaq was more dominant, but Duncan’s consistency and longevity puts him in a league of his own. I wish his and Hakeem’s careers lined up more because that would have been a rivalry for the ages. The Dream’s transcendent skills vs. Timmy’s unbreakable fundamentals. I would argue Tim is top 3. Regular season, playoffs, finals, he always performed, and always won. My main reasons for putting him above Kareem and Magic are: 1. Kareem and Magic had each other, and also James worthy. Tim had good teammates but he never had a stacked roster like those Lakers were. 2. Tim played in a tougher era. Sorry for all the guys who love the older eras but the league was simply not as developed. Similar to why this list only covers the last 50 years. When Kareem entered the league there were 14 teams, and the skills were no where near what they are today.

@@pacedeli24 That wasn’t the argument tho. But if it is, only Kobe fans obsess with this idea of flash in a pan greatness than sustained excellence. Duncan won 3 in 5 seasons, and in the seasons between made 2 deep playoff runs that ended on singular plays (0.4 Fisher shot and Manu foul on Dirk). Duncan is also the only player to win a title in 3 decades, something Kobe didn’t do. Back to back and 3 peats serve nothing past allowing casuals to believe they’re making some valid point. Most true NBA fans and analyst considered SA a dynasty, just not one that peaked insanely high then faltered, but one that never plummeted and consistently competed. Duncan didn’t have a single All-NBA teammate in 01/02/03/04/05/06/07, yet in that time still won 3 tiles. Didn’t even have an All-Star in 02/03/04 and made deep runs. On the flip side unless Shaq, Gasol or Bynum made All-NBA Kobe never even won a playoff series. As for Pop, and SA as a whole, they’ve achieved what without Duncan? Pop is literally 13 games over .500 without Tim and is now tanking again. Jackson has 6 without Kobe and just 4 years after Kobe retired LA won another title. Duncan >>>>> Kobe and it isn’t close

Kobe with a comparable teammate has KILLED Duncan and Pop's Spurs in the playoffs everytime, IN HIS PRIME. 18-12 record. And once was a sweep when he wasn't even an adult yet. after he became an adult and a starter, 18-8 against Timmy. He averaged 27+ ppg on 47%+fg. Lebron 25ppg on 45%fg. He's only 5-11 in the playoffs against Duncan and the Spurs and TWICE wayy AFTER his prime. If Lebron couldn't beat what Kobe could destroy on a regular basis. In my book I don't understand how he isnt better than Lebron and for sure Duncan. He has the most consistent coach, teammate, staff, and front office in NBA history for 2 decades with no major injuries. And he never got a back to back. Kobe is in my top 4, and I got Lebron and Duncan lower next to each other. What Kobe was able to do, go to THREE STRAIGHT Finals in the loaded west WITHOUT a top 75 player is wayy more impressive than what Lebron or Duncan did to me with a Big 3 or other Top 75 Players. Super underrated.
