Tim Duncan Defense on Shaq - 2001 NBA WCF

Спорт

When Duncan first defended Shaq in Game 1 of the 2001 WCF, he struggled to guard him as Shaq scored at will to begin the series. After a slow defensive start on Shaq, however, Duncan had more defensive success against Shaq for the rest of Game 1 and most of Game 2. In Game 3 and 4 Duncan didn't guard Shaq as often, and had occasional success in defending against Shaq for the last 2 games, though Shaq still got his points
Game 1 - 0:00
Game 2 - 4:55
Game 3 - 8:05
Game 4 - 10:10

Tim Duncan was so alone during this series and in the 2002 playoffs. Robinson was already on the decline, although still pretty effective defensively. But scoring wise, Duncan was carrying such a heavy load, while playing elite defense, it wasn't enough.

+thaxcutioner#1 True. Tim had a BIT more help in 2003. Manu, although a rookie, provided some spark off the bench. Parker was a tiny bit more experienced. Bruce Bowen was more acclimated into the system. But Duncan was at his best that year, he flat out dominated the league. But 2001 and 2002, Duncan was pretty much solo. You even hear the commentator say at 7:25, "I just don't know how much Tim has in him, he's carrying such a load offensively......"

{ bruh it's not like cousins is facing a prime duncan he can body current one } Duncan could still score on younger posts (until his very last season, when he turned 40, when he was finally too old). After that particular "Imma bust his ass" game thatswavy referred to (when Duncan was 36), Cousins had just twice scored after lowering his shoulder into Duncan's chest to knock him out of the way, and yelled "IMMA BUST HIS ASS'. Sean Elliott at the scorer's table (doing radio) heard that and said over the radio something like "Cousins may regret talking trash to one of the all-time greats. Duncan never talks but if you talk to him, he answers. Younger players have to learn, you don't tug on Superman's cape" Meanwhile Duncan and Pop give each other knowing looks and the Spurs go to Duncan for at least 10 straight possession and he scored on like 8 of them, culminating in a backdoor cut that spun Cousins completely around in a circle. Also, he blocked Cousins' layups 4 times that game. After the game, somebody told him what Elliott had said and Cousins waited outside for him and threatened to fight him.

He was literally 3,4,5 steps ahead of everyone on the court, every game night, for 19 years straight.. it's hard to find words to describe his game.. Jordan and Duncan, in my opinion, are the two best basketball players in history. Both sides of the ball.. . watching this man play and understanding his play, he's a true genius of the sport.

This perfectly illustrates why I love Duncan and dislike Shaq. Duncan was a complete, two-way player. On offense he could score in the post and from outside, and his D was outstanding. Shaq on the other hand didn't have a shot when he was more than 8 feet away from the basket. Sure, he could be highly effective, but it was all brute force, whereas Duncan highly skilled. Shaq was also inconsistent on D.

Hakeem Olajuwon was a true center who had a great fade-away jumper. He was also a great defender. Yes, Duncan was a PF-C, unlike Shaq who was a straight C, but they're both post players. Duncan was a highly-skilled, while Shaq was mostly brute force. I'm not saying Shaq wasn't effective in his prime, he certainly was. But as his athleticism diminished he wasn't nearly as effective, whereas Duncan still was.

You're talking about the Lakers Shaq. The magic shaq was very fast with good footwork. He was also good at blocks since he could jump so high. In Lakers, shaq put on more weight which made him so strong. He would score 30-40 points in one night, especially when other teams would clamp down Kobe a little bit.

He couldn't make a free throw if his life depended on it and the same for his shot beyond 6 feet away. He had maybe a "few" key word here is..👉 few nice plays but that's it. Nobody can guard Shaq because he was the biggest guy in the NBA at the time. All his shots and I mean all were possible by him bulling his way to the rim. There is no special skill set for that. Big and strong is it.😂😂😂 If if u say athletic.. I will tell u to watch the dunk Duncan blocked on Shaq. Shaq barely got off the ground and he was practically under the rim. Even his second attempt he didn't jump high. 💯 Ppl are funny when they try to put Shaq nxt to Duncan. Sorry man no comparison. They not even close.✌️😂😂😂

I wish people would notice that shaq never had basketball skills, he's just bigger than everyone. if I probs outweighed everyone by 40 pounds at least, I'd dominate any league. whenever it was a shot besides a dunk or 1 foot layup, Shaq was off and looked very uncomfortable

Tim Duncan could’ve just as easily dominated at the Center position as well. It’s interesting to wonder how he would’ve developed if he didn’t start his career standing slightly shorter than David Robinson….

He is a Center, 1-5 positions is literally for casuals to understand the game. In reality there are 3 positions: Guard, wing, big men. The difference between a 4-5 is extremely minimal

  • @DrakeBrunette

    @DrakeBrunette

@@redman6790 yes and no… It has recently come to my attention that Duncan actually spent most of his career as a Center. So my original question is somewhat irrelevant. However, there is definitely a difference between a Center and a Power Forward. Shaq v Rodman Embiid v Draymond Robinson v Barkley Yao v Dirk Dwight v Love Mutombo v McHale I could go on all day! Players are not always 1-5, correct. But sometimes they can be positioned as such. Some Centers are too big and slow to effectively play as a Power Forward. And some Power Forwards are too small to bang down low with the best Centers reliably well. It’s complex and depends on the system/players the coach is working with.

Shaq always had a hard time with guarding Duncan.. He was so bad that Shaqs coaches would try to keep him off Tim and play D on someone else. But when Shaq had to guard him, Duncan would fall back on his mid-range game and his pump fakes to get to the basket. He knew he wouldnt be able to out power him so he would just out play him from range. Duncan would create space off and pull Shaq out of the lane and drive by him. His footwork was too good for O'Neal. Shaq also made some stupid decisions on defense.. theres reasons why he was never voted to an NBA First Team All Defense.. unlike Duncan who was on that list eight times. Seemed to always be aggressive when he should be passive.. and visa versa. But as good as Timmy was at D.. he.. nor anyone else could guard Shaq 1v1 at this time of his game. He was too damn big and strong. A 7'6 Yao Ming even had a hard defending his shots.

People talking about the Duncan's defense vs Shaq like it's 1v1 lol. He has majority of the team committing to him lol. Anybody can stop Shaq if he has to reset and constantly worry about 2 other defenders coming in to triple team he's gonna struggle to score at times. That help from the defense forced him to take jump hooks outside of his comfort zone. 1v1 he could back Duncan down EASILY and finish at the rim. It was more of team defense vs Shaq than just 1 individual . That goes from any player that has been that dominant in the paint. Lebron, Giannis, etc...

That thing I loved about Duncan is, he always let the game come to him and never forced anything… and it’s crazy how bad Shaqs game is anywhere outside the paint? He never developed anything outside the paint… just like Lebron. U really have to be a privileged player or “Superstar” getting calls ur way to help u get more points, cuz that’s the only way ur gonna get any other points… at the foul line! And Shaq and Lebron are both horrible FT shooters so they can’t really capitalize off that LOL
