Hi, thanks for your very interesting review. To avoid too much color shift with VNDs, I use a Kase Clip ND8 filter and when I use a VND, it limits a lot the color shift and also the light reflection because I don't use the VND to its maximum. The X pattern is also significantly reduced with my Sony FE 20mm and 24mm lenses. I haven't found a better solution at the moment, other than using ND filters alone. It's the same for videos, now I use a Kase Mist (Dream) Clip In filter in front of the Sony sensor (equivalent between 1/8 and 1/4 Polar pro). I get a really nice result.

The only thing I don’t like about it is that the adapters for large format filters just clamp onto the front. Same as the mini matte box they make, which puts it right in glare and streakville. Wish they had put it into the back…. I am not selling my expensive filters. This is a nice box tho. And I will pick one up. I hope the Vaxis filters are good because I’ve found most of their glass products to suck.

Hi Adam and family! Good to see you are well! I often think that Tilta are the 'pro' version of the things you make yourself. You seem to have a similar ethos to one another. I feel like you could do consulting work for them! It's so nice to be able to have a variable ND on a control like that. I got the Weeble S transmission package, and whilst I love being able to use my iPhone on the gimbal to give me more control and angle options, unfortunately I cannot use the follow focus motor function as my lenses are fly-by-wire micro four thirds. Maybe someday I will be able to afford a speedbooster and EF glass!

  • @apropo441

Thanks for this presentation ! The problem with variable NDs is that since it's a couple a polarizers, it changes the light polarisarion, so light reflection, when rotated in capture. Do you know it the whole variable ND could be turned to keep control of the polarization ?

Great video Adam, I wonder if it’s possible to also still use screw-in filters with this setup. It was possible with Tiltas Mini Matte Box to use Screw in Filters on the lens even when using the step-up rings .With this new Step-up ring design I’m not sure if that would still work. Could you please check?

Image being able to use a VND instead of ISO for native auto-exposure on your camera! If Tilta can work out how to control the motorised VND using the camera's exposure value, so it maintains consistent exposure by increasing or decreases the ND, that would be INSANE!

Shame they havent thought it completely through. If you use the vND, you cant use another one of the new drop in effects filters because the matte box only has one slot. would gladly have taken 5mm more depth to put a second filter, like a pro mist, into the matte box. of course, depending on the lens you can use a screw on type one and than attach the matte box onto it, or fall back to the big and heavy 4x5.65 ones, but a second slot would have been easier/cheaper/lighter.

Have you noticed any barrel vignetting when using the stack adapter to mount two 95mm circular filters? I use the Sony S3/A1 and the GM 24-70 as my main run and gun and notice anything wider than 30mm I get heavy vignetting around the corner edges, of course the “solution” is to just zoom to 35mm and ignore it, but is that right? Wonderful but would've love to see more direct VND color reproduction quality vs PolarPro Basecamp. Buying it anyway as I struggle between 5-7 stops during midday which means jumping from 2-5 VND to 6-9 VND back and forth. Also ND's are dirt cheap on this mattebox vs $200 each for PP basecamp. BUT we need in-depth comparison between all as I already own the PP basecamp and it might end up being exclusive to 200-600mm G lens, assuming this doesn't fit it.

Thanks for making the review. What's the biggest lens diameter the matte box can take? Since filters are stuck at 95mm I guess for majority of cinema lenses that are over 100mm in diameter (which is more common) wouldn't be able to be used unfortunately then. So it's a matte box targeted for lower end lens market.
