I have just discovered this great, young, jazz preservation group about a week ago, and I have a word of warning to anyone who sees and hears just one, Tuba Skinny KZread video. The warning is, you can't turn it off because it's extremely addictive.

Thank you for keeping it alive on KZread, because if I had not run into yours and possibly others, I would not have known about them. I have forwarded and shared your videos to some of my old jazz band members, who are still alive, that I have played with here in Ms., and they are agreeing with me 100%. @@JamesSterling yes James, I have heard them, but I do not know them personally. Unfortunately, I have become disconnected from any active groups for at least 50 years, after my college days when my Penzel Mueller B-flat clarinet crapped out on me and I had become a radio Broadcast Engineer and never picked it up again. After my addiction was energized just about 1 week ago, my mind has gone back to my high school and college days, and thanks to you for the videos, I'm seriously considering at least a replacement instrument off of eBay or somewhere, just for my own personal satisfaction. I own two radio stations currently and occasionally get to NO for a convention or something, and now I will be reliving my youthful experiences, at least in my head, the next time I get there.

I bawled all through this... this was my beloved parents' "official love song". My dear daddy was a circus drummer, & he met my mother when it played her tiny home town in West Virginia. They both loved this song, & it was played by my daddy on the piano almost every day, when I was growing up... I've been singing it in my heart ever since. I couldn't remember the name, for some weird reason---& now I have it. I love this version, & I love this band!!! My folks have gone home to the glory of God's Kingdom... but I can almost see them dancing around Heb'm (thanks, Dizzy!)as Tuba Skinny plays "their song"... Thanks so much for this, y'all, from my heart & soul--it's been such a joyous surprise to find this sweet song tonight, at a time that I really need that joy...& from New Orleans, too, one of my daddy's favorite cities ever--in this great old jazz style, which he played in many big bands in his younger days. They both loved this style so much, too. Know what??? I think they led me here tonight, to ease my mind. It's been a rough year this week, but this is a saving grace. Thanks again AND again(& a few hundred MO' 'gins, as Daddy might say...& God bless you all, & your little dogs, too. Or cats. Or birds. Or possums. Or lizards. & stuff.😘🎶🎵🎶🎵

Thanks again for everything, & keep the music in the air-- it's desperately needed, in these sorrowful times. 💙🎵💓🎶💚

Absolute ripper, to use an Australian expression to say how good this group is. In the 1950’s I had a skiffle group during my RAF medics posting in Germany, trad jazz and skiffle was all the rage back the. This magic group take me back to a wonderful early part of my life. 👍🎼🎺🎷🇬🇧🇦🇺🦘🔭

Skiffle, Ken Colyer and the Crane River Jazz Band were played on radio, I was lucky enough to see/hear them live. the song eluded me then, I wanted more info about it, no Computers those days, dragging around the Jazz/Skiffle clubs of those wonderful days remains in my mind sixty plus year after. I had my Own band, 'aka' San Jacinto Hot Stompers when in the mob, ended up playing Rock since skiffle and New Orleans jazz sadly died out to be replaced by tuneless moronic Chants and electronic Drums/Organs'pretend piano's etc. still we are able to look back and THANK those amazing Jazz Musicians.Absolutely Bonzer mate.! Good comment. In some ways, this is both poignant and comic. Todd strides out in his greatcoat over a V-necked tee-shirt and scarf then plays a great line until he jumps up as a car honks at the band. Even though they're all freezing, Greg sits laughing as Craig (from Seattle), who normally can't get a note out when it's cold, plays a great solo that's in tune and not pinched. And Jon Doyle, another northwesterner, plays a leisurely and touching solo, wearing a tee-shirt and zip-up sweatshirt. As Bill Edwards says below, these are not mere mortals.

The essence of jazz is improvisation. They're not remembering anything. They're making it up as they go. Which is even more impressive than if they remembered it all. Classical soloists remember longer, more involved musical pieces. Great jazz musicians invent their music new every time they play it.

@@danielschechter8130 No, they aren't inventing it anew; if they were, we wouldn't recognize the tunes from song to song. What makes musical improvisation possible is practicing together until they each know what the other is going to do when it's their turn.

@@jlongfellow6877 I'd totally forgotten this comment and was surprised to see you show up in my Gmail notifications. But yes, that's a great response, DC and an 18th C magistrate's wig. Since I specialized in 18th C lit, I consider this a witty and literate response. Nice to hear from a Longfellow! And it's fun to see that over time, comments take on a life of their own. I still think about responding to comments from more than a year ago. Esp on James' great videos.

I made that trip especially because I knew that Jon Doyle would be in town playing with Kris Tokarski and I hoped to hear Jon play again with Tuba Skinny. This Monday busking performance was the only occasion he had to play with them this trip so I stayed over until Monday so I could be there.

Yes it looks like a Conn New Wonder. You may know this, but the sax per se is at most a small component in making that mellow sound. A mouthpiece with a large chamber and low, straight baffle is essential. The player may further damp the overtones by cushioning the reed with lots lower lip.

But it was worth it , to watch this perfect performance with a solo from Jonathon Doyle to add iceing to the cake. Thanks James for all your hard work in presenting these gems, it's not as easy as some imagine.
