Nice video Terry & much appreciated. Having been in the transport refrigeration industry...I can attest to the sheer strength of quality silicone & polyurethane adhesives. I did some "tiling over tiles" many (many) moons ago....and even if I do say so myself, made a decent job of it. I'm about to try another project & your video has re-established the confidence I had all those years ago! Cheers.

To all the professional contractors who are outraged by this method, the thing is gutting out even a small bathroom is an expensive venture! And a major commitment! Not to mention the cost of labor if you have to hire someone to come in and do it for you. He’s offering a cheaper quicker option for those of us who do not share your skills or have the means to take on a big job but want to update our bathrooms. I appreciate him showing “ out of the box” ideas! If you think this is so terrible make your own video showing a cheaper and less complex option than gutting the whole thing out. Most people know taking shortcuts result in less than desire results but if you do you know the risks up front

maam i understand your point of view we installers are only upset and few of u who have had less than quality installs value men like us that get so angry at this its not that a do it urself may want to save labor costs and try this method all though every setter has said great addons to this mans reglect to take time n learning the proper way to tile over existing tile for the best QUALITY video and install ..were upset becuse some dipstickis out here in the industry after wathing this video ripping someone off and charging the customer for a full install and just doing some b.s half ass job like this ..weve crafted our skill and do not get to take ANY EASY routes if we do our job with integrity and give our customers a 100% quality install .. its teaching scammers another way to rip people off and thats just another under payed job one of us will get called to come fix after some want to be installer empties some poor couples bank account and were there hearing and seeing the honor story ..so in the end its more work less pay and theres no respectful mans knowledge hard work or time put in knowing if this will last month or years ..grout excepts water so eventually youll end up with moldy water stiuck behind this layer growing all kings of bs etc its just no way to offer anyone and optional method ...the multi purpose thinset is way cheaper do not use spacers as depth finders ,primiers and scuffing the crap outta face of each tile would be #1 thing to do along with finding out if you have any loose tiles etc plus you have 0 idea how bad one installer said the cement board hold the first layr up is ..the pan most of the time has started to leak bye then and almost every shower ive tourout has had black mold between the tile and whatever style walls its stuck on. so honestly no unless ur planning on selling and ripping off the next homeowner your just causing yourself more labor cost n what we see as near future...but thanks for telling us who dont want people like u to get crappie installs how we should be as dumb as man making this video..wish we could teardown the walls and do video of this now after all u no it alls dyi ers think u can do whats taken us years to master and the EXACT REASON ITS A COSTLY VENTURE .. IF U DONT HAVE MONEY TO DO IT THEN YOULL PROBABLY GET ONE 2 EITHER DIPSTICK INSTALLER RIP U OFF OR A QUALITY INSTALLER LIKE I SEE COMMENTING WHO OUTTA KINDNESS OF HIS HEART DOES THE JOB FOR HALF THE PRICE TO MAKE SURE U DONT GET SCREWED....MORAL OF STORY DO UR FRIGGIN HOMEWORK BEFORE U MAKE VIDEO THINKING YOU HAVE MASTERED SUCH N ARTISTIC HARD MANUAL LABORED SKILLED TRADE

I've watched a lot of these videos in preparation for re-tiling by bathtub surround wall and the one thing no one addresses is how to finish off the edges where the tile ends and the drywall wall begins. Really appreciate you taking the time to film it all.

You can tile on top of tile. He could of use a primer, ie bal primer and then adhesive and it still would of worked. Also silicon is designed to grab most things. I once done a small splash back at home and used CT1. Still there not budged 4 years later. Also for those who say your losing living space, what 6mm? You can tell he knows what hes doing, look at his joints and cuts. Great work buddy, nice to see someone understands modern building materials and how to use them in the 21st century. Suprised you havnt had someone say use sand and cement then wait 3 weeks to dry then tile. Lol

+Jimjim Skimmer I wonder why this method isn't the industry standard and ANSI approved? I wouldn't be surprised if you start to see signs of failure when it's 10 years old. A bathroom should easily last 30+ years with thin set mortar. I have my doubts about the silicone. It looks nice though, level tiles and no lippage; he is definitely skilled at measuring and makign cuts.

First thing is that tiling over tiles is legit. I went to the Henkel labs and they showed me pull off tests that prove it works better than nearly any other substrate. They use their tile adhesive and it works fine. You can use silicone, I have seen basins stuck with it and they don't come off even when you want them to. Provided the existing tiles are well stuck there is nothing wrong with this method. Would I do it? No because tile adhesive does the same job.

I agree, I tiled over the original tiles in my kitchen with silicone and they have been on over a year and are stuck fast,in fact I made a mistake with one tile and when tried to get it off the next day it was stuck so well I had to smash it to get it off and even then it wasn't easy . By the way one of the main reasons I did it this way is because I managed to get the silicone tubes at a pound each.

I would like to try this silicone method as long as the surface is cleaned with TSP or a similar product to remove any oily fingerprints or dust and or debris. I would also make sure the previous surface has no voids in it and maybe scarify the previous tile surface. Also silicone doesn't break down. For the people that have thumbs down that's say that this method is just not right.. I would love to hear the reasoning behind it, not just because that's the way they were taught. New things are learned everyday. I've been tiling for 15 years it's definitely a known fact you can tile over tile but I would really like to hear some input on why this method is no good from the" pros" .I try to learn something new everyday and always keep an open ear to new tricks of the trade. Thanks in advance for your input.

I have tiles in the inset of my fireplace, also on the hearth. Thing is i have painted these using tile paint. Do you think the silicone would work against the tile paint. The reason i need to cover this is because i have found i am allergic to the tile paint. If your method won,t work, what else do you suggest without removing the tiles?

Just an observation. I was recently removing tiles and the ones that were tiled over plaster actually came off a lot more easily than the ones that were tiled over other (glazed) tiles. But all of them had been secured with tile adhesive, not silicone.
