The very first time I saw Tilda was in Orlando. I was taken with her performance and the film that I sat and watched it THREE times in a row. I just thought it that spectacular. Watching Tilda in anything instantly draws you in and lights up the film with a focused intelligence. Amazing actress and fascinating person.

Mark Kermode is perhaps one of the better examples of a BBC acolyte who has succeeded saying what he likes because the Beeb likes what he says. Great at communicating the virtues of film within the milieu of film. Beyond that he has no practical use. A hologram which affects substance and yet has no mass. Years ago I begged Alex Cox to return and put us out of our misery. But he preferred wandering the boondocks of Oregon to working with the BBC one more time . That said, even Kermode can look down with disdain upon Simon Mayo - whose sum total of work is often confused with Dead Air.

God, this is a such an annoying criticism. At 26:25, Swinton is talking about the last scene of "Michael Clayton" and how the power of the scene comes from the conflict between these two different voices. Kermode interjects, "if Quentin Tarantino is watching, try to learn to do that." No, idiot. What you're saying is that you don't like his style. That's a different criticism. Tarantino writes characters from their core and populates his stories with different voices that reflect their experiences, social conditioning and understanding of the world. Django's voice is different in tempo/cadence/tone/pace to those of Vincent Vega/Rick Dalton/Jackie Brown. The only similarity is these characters have something to say and they are not afraid to say it.

  • @robertr798

@@esinach Read one of his scripts vs most scripts. He creates memorable characters with different voices and writes dozens of them into some scripts. Is Tarantino's dialogue heightened? Does it have a style? Sure. So does those of Wilder, the Coens, Sturges. His scripts are not filled with witty banter for their own sake. They're style and substance working simultaneously. He can make films as long as possible but you're never lost because of the clarity of each character's purpose within the story and their unique approach to speech (both content and style). THAT is writing characters from their core. He's one of the few screenwriters who has done this at such a consistently high level for decades. Kermode has always had a weirdly patronising view of Tarantino and has never avoided the opportunity to level a petty insult at the celebrated filmmaker, whether his criticisms are informed or not.

Tarantino can make 3 hour movies, where the main source of conflict is often people just talking to each other, absolutely riveting. The Hateful Eight is just a room with a handful of characters in it talking to each other 95% of the time and it’s one of the most intense movies I’ve seen.

Okay Swinton lost me at the Oscar story...love seeing her work. Have literally no interest in hearing someone falsely pontificate on not realising the impact of winning an Academy Award. Such bulls***. 🙄
