TikTok tracked UK journalist via her cat's account - BBC News

A British journalist has said her TikTok account has been tracked and accessed by staff at the Chinese owned social network.
Cristina Criddle from the Financial Times had been working on a story about the culture inside TikTok's UK operation, when staff used her data to try to identify her sources.
TikTok's parent company said the staff responsible have now been fired.

TikTok is absolutely a security risk since it is owned by China, which is known to do this periodically. When you accept the terms of service, it allows TikTok (and many, many, many) other apps, to record video and audio *at will*, which means that it can turn on recording equipment on your phone without alerting you or getting your consent each time it turns them on. Beyond this, any data connected already to the account is stored by the app's company, and can potentially be mined at any point by anyone if they gain access. This can happen via sale (legal in many places), hacking, or a back door (most likely scenario in this case) that allows the parent company in China to gain access. To answer your first question, they did answer it- she got a call to look at the NYT article which talked about this issue. Presumably as a journalist she then did some digging. Third question is one that is not safe to publish publicly, though it is an interesting one.

I love how everybody focused on TikTok. You don’t even need TikTok to be tracked. As long as you’ve got electronic items, or even walk on the street. If someone wanted to track you, here you go. It’s not rare to hear gov data or system got hacked, even the US army. It’s not something you can avoid unless you’re an engineer yourself. However, unless you’re a influencer, MP, PM etc you don’t have to worry about it cause we the normal people don’t even worth being track😂.

@@HumanBeingsRThinkingBeings Any sort of spying on our citizens should be averted, however China is a direct US competitor and we have good reason to believe that they would use this technology to harm the US and it's people as a whole. There is already evidence of a huge propaganda campaign conducted by China which targets people online across the world whereas Israel doesn't need to conduct propaganda or harm the US and it's people (not saying they're angels, either). Another factor to consider is that China does not allow Western social media websites and apps to function in their territories however they expect us to be able to use theirs, which is a flaming double standard which further raises suspicion that they may have weaponized social media. The worst part is, the American people have no idea. Before you think whether China would do such a thing -- think to yourself, why wouldn't China?

This is weird, like really weird. First off, how did she find out? Who told her? Anyone with facebook should be well aware that Meta have access to all their info and it is regulated by even our own government and they have full access to it. How would they censor it otherwise. You could post porn on there if they didn't. And there is definitely something odd about her, outside of her being one of these creepy cat women. She seems well informed. Does anyone on here know when their facebook account has been looked at by Meta? I think she's there to spread propaganda... either that or she's a government employee masquerading as a journalist. Maybe they just couldn't believe someone would actually want to setup an account for her cat and decided to check out who this mad woman was.
