Douyin is local chinese version, it operates separately from tiktok (on separate server). This is about information control. If bytedance had the majority of the shares, all the 3 letter agencies cannot access the database and user data which is stored in the server, which it can freely do with the likes of facepuke, instagay, youturd and X.

At worst, the other apps are taking your data and using it to sell you stuff. TikTok feeds your data straight to the CCP, which has been building up their military with the specific intent of surpassing the US. I don't particularly want to live in a world run by authoritarians, and I don't want to aid them in their aspirations to do so. Ban it.

Can we just get rid of all social media? Or just take it back to what it used to be, keeping up to date with family members and friends? The current iteration of social media is such a blight on society for so many reasons.

The fact that Tik-Tok and Instagram reels are slowly hindering people’s ability to focus for long periods of time, which is particularly worrisome for children whose brains haven’t fully developed. This is also contributing to phone addiction. It’s causing far more harm than good. Getting rid of Instagram and Facebook was by far the best decision I’ve made in a while. If I want to get an update on a friend’s life, I’ll ask them directly.

Quite an overblown argument. What are the chances that business owners would even need to worry about the bill. Unless its malicious of course. Though vague, "National Security Risk" is a tall statement. It just so happened that Tiktok is way too popular, and especially close to china. Which would explain the insisting questions about the companies' relations with the CCP. Not to say that bytedance have done wrong or have done so, but its definitely a possibility and is a risk which would be bad for the national security.

Well, if they don't want to ban it then TikTok should comply with the congress.
