TiK ToK girl felt racial DISCRIMINATION in Asia....Was it?

#asiatravel #vietnam #solotravel #solotraveler #tiktokvideo
While Scrolling Tik Tok I cam across an upset girl ranting about her mistreatment in Vietnam. She made the conclusion that it was racially related. Im not so sure but I would like your opinion. Are people of color discriminated against in Asia? Was she barking up the wrong tree? Could this situation be related to other factors?

Their country, their ways. As an American there is something Americans must learn. The American way isn't always the "right"way. I was on a baht bus some years back in Thailand and this old lady looked at me and said "you fat", which of cousre I am. I didn't take it personally. It is what it is. One of the many things I love about Thailand. They say it like it is. Thanks Greeny.

These people, especially Americans, need to realize that no one outside of the US cares about your feelings. Discrimination is alive and well throughout the world. I've lived in Japan (for work) for the last three years with my Thai wife, and we experience discrimination daily. At the customer service level, we are treated pretty well, but outside of that, we are nothing more than an inconvenience to them. We have been denied entrance into restaurants and bars because we don't speak Japanese. Imagine that happening in the US, the left would have a field day with something like that. I also work with other Americans who are married to Japanese spouses, and they are treated differently than traditional Japanese couples. Their children are also treated differently at school. Your entitlement is only important to you, no one else.

“I don’t know if it has anything to do with me or how I look, but I just know like they wouldn’t be doing this to some like white chic.” Where to begin? First the second statement contradicts the first. Next I’m assuming she’s never seen how the family treats “white chics”. Third, and in my experience, Vietnamese people are very much to the point when they’re dealing with people they don’t know. For her to chalk up a situation in which she felt slighted (whether real or imagined) to racism is purely anecdotal. I don’t know her, but based on her little rant she sounds very entitled. And if she’s never been treated worse than that then she still has a lot of living left to do.

She's leaving out so many details, all just to play the victim card. I've been to the far east many times and I've never ran into this problem. If she's in Vietnam she has to think about the fact that our country was involved in a serious military conflict with that country that ended only a mere 50 years ago. Many Vietnamese people were killed in a conflict that lasted 20 years, so maybe she ran into someone who lost loved ones due to this conflict. So many western women have problems outside of the west, why, because they've been spoiled and coddled by the gynocracy in the west. It's sickening how many westerners believe the rest of the world has to operate by their standards. When you are in someone else's country act like a guest and assume nothing. I seriously doubt if what she experienced was racism but was more like a reality check. If she went to France and didn't attempt to speak French she would be treated as bad, if not worse, so I doubt if her perception was correct. Maybe she just hasn't traveled enough to understand that the extreme coddling that occurs in the west doesn't carry over to the middle east or the far east (thank God). This woman might have just been scammed and couldn't communicate with the owner well enough to clear up the matter. Sure, there is some small degree of bias in many places around the world, but racism is a whole different beast. Great reaction video, keep 'em coming.

she's assuming the landlord/landlady is literate.... maybe the owner already doesn't want to rent out the property, and when the current renter subleased, that was the straw that broke the camel's back. I get people wants to save money and has a tight budget, but why sublease.... there are plenty of other affordable places you can lease directly. my rule of thumb for picking places to travel is that if there are any hint of anti-american, I don't waste my time with that place, I don't care how "great" or how "beautiful" that place is. case in point, the 3 idiots (2 men and 1 woman) decided to go hiking near the iranian border a number of years back and ended up getting arrested by the iranians and the u.s. government had to pay a random to get them back. it's interesting that back in the States, when you go to a vietnamese restaurant and a thai restaurant, you'll get a much better receptive and friendly experience from the thai restaurant than the vietnamese restaurant. it may not be a fair representation of each's country and their people, but hey, it's my money and my life, I chose to spend it all in thailand instead of vietnam just basing those initial experiences. don't get me wrong, I had encountered racism in thailand. a few years before pandemic, I was staying at the le bue state tower. and I had issues telling the taxi drivers to take me back to that hotel. so I would take out my phone and bring up the picture of the building, most taxi drivers immediately knows where I wanted to go and take me there. all except this one old thai taxi guy, he took 1 look at it and then told me to get off and also said "my taxi is for thai people only". I left, no fuss about it. but that didn't change my positive view about thailand.

Sure racism exists, but what I’ve seen more often than not are people claiming racism as a way to shift blame on something they can’t control. Playing the victim tends to gain sympathy from others and that nurtures their own insecurities. In my opinion there was no racism here.

Oh my these poor people. The people of Vietnam can prefer whichever race they like. White people like them too (the women!) and we get along well, if that wasn't true we wouldn't be in Asia. Interestingly I recently saw an Indian in Vietnam's YT channel and he was really upset about this so-called white privilege. Fair enough but if they don't like Indians maybe not a good country to be living in.

Well Greeny, since you asked people to "help you out", here it goes... But first, I agree with you on a couple points. Vietnamese culture is definitely more curt and less customer service oriented than places like Thailand, and that likely contributed to the TikToker's takeaway of the situation. Also, this single incident is not necessarily evidence of a wider problem; it may have simply been a misunderstanding further complicated by the language barrier and saving "face". That said, your reaction to her reaction--taking to KZread to say she's wrong--might be equally oversimplified and rushed to judgement. The term "racism" isn't only applicable to situations where people intentionally treat certain people with hate or disdain; it also describes situations where, even unintentionally, the OUTCOMES experienced by people vary along racial lines. A good way to explain this is to describe a less politically-charged "ism": ageism. While a society or person might profess to respect its elders, the data might show otherwise in that elderly people are more likely to be discriminated against when applying for a job or renting an apartment. Such a society isn't "we-hate-you" ageist, yet it's still ageist, as demonstrated by the measurable disparity in outcomes. So back to the TikToker, she repeatedly made it clear that she was describing the latter type of racism, not the former, specifying "white privilege" in which that group simply doesn't have to deal with some hassles that are all-too-commonly experienced by non-whites. Again, a less politically-charged example may help: think about how some cultures may insist that women not lift heavy items or engage in physically strenuous or specially unpleasant chores; regardless of how that came to be, it still amounts to a privilege that many women may take for granted, much to the chagrin of men who don't get to enjoy the same treatment/benefits. In summary, I'm not saying that the TikToker was right...but I'm also not saying that she's wrong either. Every society has a pecking order, and a person would have to be blind to miss that, in many but certainly not all regards, it's REALLY good to be a white dude in many parts of Asia, whether we're talking Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, or Japan.
