Tighten Pivot Pin on a Folder

A method for eliminating blade play and tightening the pivot in a traditional slip joint folding knife (works for any pinned knife):
1. squeeze pivot
2. peen pivot pin
3. buff bolster
It is best to make a lot of light taps instead of a few hard taps, because there is less damage to the bolster. Good luck!

Came across this video when looking for info on how to do it with a slip joint old-time knife. Worked great. My knife isn't nearly as wobbly as it was. Thank you fir the video bud

Thanks so much for posting this. I had assumed my knife (similar to yours) was beyond repair but I followed your steps (I already had a ball-peen hammer) and managed to peen the loose pin pretty accurately. A bit of tidying up with fine sandpaper and a strop and it looks and feels fantastic.

I used a flat tipped punch that was about the same diameter as the pin and it didn't mar up the bolster at all as opposed to just using a ball peen hammer 🔨.

Ì use a micro punch to repeen the pivot and bolster pins on knives that have loosened up. I took a 1/8" long shank punch and put it in my drill press on low speed and filed it to size and polished it as it was spinning in order to not get it off center. I have several in diffetent diameters to fit different knife brands and models. You can use a nail also. File it to size, then harden the end. It works just fine but doesn't last long.

If a person has a really nice expensive pocket knife, such as an antique slip joint with exotic handle material, or even a rare knife, I would warn against doing this UNLESS you already have good experience in doing this sort of repair. Some knives or parts are irreplaceable, and one little slip up can result in cracking your handles, ( genuine ivory, stag, bone, abalone, etc.), or scarring the bolsters so much that a lot of bolster material would have to be sanded away, or even over-tightening of the blades, which is asking for even more problems to loosen them to the exact tension & tolerances. Depending upon the actual knife, many good repairmen will often use a special type of feeler guage to have the proper shim so that the blades are not over-tightened and have the proper blade action known as the "walk & talk". Sometimes, this type of repair may require the complete removal and replacement of the pivot pin itself. If your knife is "just a work knife"........it wouldn't be so much of a concern. But I don't recommend doing this to really nice knives. There are plenty of good qualified people who can easily repair loose blades in nice slip joint knives for a nominal fee plus shipping. We're only talking around 20 bucks, and that is a small price to pay for SAFELY repairing heirloom quality knives. Always get references from past customers. A good knife restorer/repairman should have plenty of references available. Your good knives are worth it.

Any recommendations for a good knife repairman? I'm afraid I'll crack the 90+ year old bone and I would much rather have a pro tighten the pivot.

I actually just used this video's peening method on my swing guard stiletto that had play in all directions. Worked pretty darn good, but I overdid it slightly, so I had to play with it for a good hour so I could loosen it back up 👍

This is a way to tighten anything that is pinned together. As others have said, a drift pin might be more precise. As for an auto, I am not familiar with those knives.

Do you have any tips for tightening the covers, scales, handles, back to the frame? I would guess you could use a vise and some leather or something to soften the pressure from the vice to do a similar thing you did in this video.

theWZZA Thanks for the reply, i think it's going to be difficult to hammer the scale pins on because it has celluloid handles and it's a really old imperial from the 30's and I'm worried about cracking them. Should I just squeeze the knife scale back on gently with the vice instead? I was never planing on carrying or using it I just wanted to fix it up a bit. Should I just leave it alone as is? Thanks.

Tilbily Well seeing as this looks to be an older knife most likely the company is out of business or is now overseas or the warranty no longer covers a knife of this age. If the company is overseas would you really want to risk shipping your knife overseas for warranty repair and A. most likely never see it again, or B. have it sent back to you and say they didn't make the knife. It's just easier to do it yourself anyway in an afternoon than wait a week or more to get it back.
