TIE Shuttle's TRUE FORM
Star Wars has no shortage of TIE variants. We've all been told that the TIE shuttle is essentially just one ship re-purposed as another. But... the truth is a little more interesting! Let's explore the TIE Shuttle's true form!

The TIE Command Shuttle finally has a proper canon image thanks to the TIE Fighter Owners' Workshop Manual and let me just say your rendition is almost identical to the official model. Hopefully we see more of the hidden and obscure ships from the films you focus the spotlight on so very often get some love in canon soon

Wonder if that model is somewhere? Or maybe they just temporarily modified a TIE bomber model for that one shot? The only other weird ship i can think of now is that strange version of the AT-ST in Empire that's only in one shot.

Thanks for the fun video. When nearly every ship and ground vehicle in a trilogy are iconic, you know that the design and modeling teams made something special. The star wars vehicles and vessels are both completely fanciful and yet fully believable at the same time.
Wow! that detail flew right by me! That's so interesting. Sop that means they built an entire model that we didnt even really know about. Thanks for this Henry!
@seajaye9540

They did that to us a LOT and EC Henry is really good at fleshing them out for us.
You know…maybe the reason the TIE Bomber frame was used for the TIE Shuttle and its variants is the extra space. The OG TIE Bomber has all this space added on, but its jammed full of sensors, targeting computers, and of course, ammunition. In a TIE Shuttle, without all that stuff (which would be unnecessary for a spacecraft not meant for a heavy combat role) they could add in shields, proper life support, and maybe even a hyperdrive.
Great video Henry, i've always thought that something was out of place there but i've never imagined the outward wing position =). Your model is lacking the landing gear and the boarding ramp is said to be underneath the second pod.

Tie fighters: Have side shields to protect the crew. The side shields when you touch them: *A'ight, I'ma head out.*
Thank god! I was literally watching ESB an hour ago and yes I paused on this thing as I often do. It’s done my head in for years
I don't know but I'm laughing at the fact the the TIE VIP, is literally the Body of a TIE Bomber, the holding pod for passengers, but the wings of a bomber just inverted, am I wrong? XD!!! Also ECHenry, these videos of Star Wars and Star Trek are amazing, cool!!
One ship I never seemed to track down the identity is some fighter-like rebel ships in the attack on the second Death Star (shown flying along with other small ships as you see the rebel fleet fly towards the imperials). They have 4 main engines arranged horizontally in a line at the rear and are rather flat ships. But I never see anyone ever mention them.
A LIFELONG QUESTION FINALLY ANSWERED! Hahaha for the longest time, I did think it was just kind of box-shaped shuttle like the ones in Star Trek. Now we can finally see what it really is! Think maybe the studio model is still sitting at Lucasfilm somewhere? Get Pablo to dig it up! And yes I'm still noticing new things when I watch the Star Wars movies. Used to happen every time I watched them. They're so densely packed with detail it's insane.
I like the music in this video
I refused to believe you until I looked into this myself... mind blow! I’m not worthy. You are the Pan
One advantage of having grown up with the series from it's release in 1977 is having all the card's, books etc that came out as well. Before the internet was a thing you only had movie stills or released info to go by. Thanks to the item's that were available lot's of what is seen was already documented in various forms. There are still argument's done of content like who shot first, Han did in the 1977 release, Greedo never even fired so that solves that :). But owning item's from that time does offer so many little details one doesn't even think of or notice. If you watch ESB on the big screen it's easy to tell the wing's are reversed to that of a Tie Bomber but no real other detail is noticed. The best thing about Star Wars is it doesn't matter how big a fan you are or even how many time's you seen the movie's, there is always new thing's you learn. A prime example in ROTJ until a few weeks ago I never knew Vader was holding Luke's saber during their battle, and I can say I am not the only one. That is one reason fan's of SW are so great we all share a love of finding and learning new thing's.
Good catch! I wonder how many people at Lucasfilm are now looking at Rogue One and Andor and going “Woopsie!”. Nah…who are we kidding. They don’t care at Lucasfilm. They had Kylo Ren take a regular Imperial Tie Fighter to save Rey and forgot it didn’t have hyperspace capabilities.
Dang, I hate to say it, but this was the advantage to having the privilege of viewing multiple screenings of the 70mm print when it was originally released in 1980. On the big screen it was very evident that this ship was different than the typical TIE bomber. I remember it clearly, although, as the years went by I think most of us old school fans forgot about it until the day we got our flat screen TVs. When I did I had one of those “OOH YEAAAH!” moments.
I've seen the Empire Strikes Back probably more than any other Star Wars film and I never thought about this. I remember seeing this shot and thinking it was a TIE Bomber and not connecting the two scenes together at all.
Very flipping cool! Even 40 years on, the OT is giving us new tiddlybits
In high def, I noticed that Carrie Fisher is stoned most of the time in the second and third movies...

Yep, she was taking cocaine at the time. You can spot her "coke nail" a few times in ESB.
I've always wondered ! Thank you !
I feel like I've known about this for a long time, at least since the '90s. either I saw it one of the many times I paused the space scenes in return of the Jedi to examine the background ships or it had a card in the SWCCG.
Great video! Are you also able to analyse the Rebel fleet at the end of Empire strikes back? Their ships are wildly different from what we are used to
That concept art really just set it in stone. Really wish this appeared in Rogue One instead.
Nice vid, I hope we get a model of the TIE shuttle someday.
sweet find
I come in regards of Grand Admiral Eckhartsladder of the Eckhart Armada to notify you that he really appreciates you on the Viscount Star Defender.
Nice catch.
Crazy lol...that ship always stood out to me in ESB.
Concerning the TIE Boarding Craft (so, not the TIE Shuttle), I'm pretty sure that one of themt is present in ROTJ: at the beginning of the movie, when Vader arrives at the Death Star, there is a TIE moored in the hangar. You can see it from above when the shuttle arrives. It looks like a TIE Bomber, and I always thought it was one of them. But then, Moff Jerjerrod walks to welcome Lord Vader, and at this moment, you can see the TIE from its front (judging by its wings, but also it is clear that it's not the cockpit side, not the back side). And guess what ? It seams that there is NO "bomb shooter" under this part of the ship. In that way, it must be a TIE Boarding Craft, visible since 1983 ! Amazing isn't it ? I let you check and eventually, make a video about this :) !
This would be interesting to think about from an in-universe technological standpoint, like if this different radiator configuration traded the sturdiness and compactness of the typical TIE bomber, something that's only really useful on a dedicated attack fighter, in return for a more stable distribution of weight while in flight and for a much more efficient heat radiation system, allowing any VIP to enjoy a climate-controlled, turbulence-free flight that ends up being far more comfortable than the cramped, swelteringly hot interior of a typical TIE shuttle.
Thank you EC Henry Very cool
Outstanding analysis! I always thought it was a airtight box with an airlock and thrusters.
Damn, I watched ESB doezens of times, but I never noticed that. It's nice to still learn something new about those movies even after all those years.
It may also be TIE advanced like Vader's, TIEs advanced currently has a slimmer profile than a regular TIE fighter. But the original TIE-AD like Vader's was big and similar to a TIE BOMBER. But as you showed, the wings seem to be angled out, it seems to be a special ship.
This was awesome!
Seriously surprised there has not been a Captain Needa and Shuttle Lego set... would be neat.
Fantastic detective work and beautiful model! :-)
Kuat is really getting their credits worth with all these TIE variants. Kinda makes you wonder if this ship could go toe to toe with a U-Wing. While this tie definitely seems to be purpose built I'd be curious if post Endor or even post Exegol, that someone might convert a TIE bomber frame into a shuttle craft like this one.
Ah, the shuttle that Captain needa use for a 10 minute ride to inform Vader of something that could be transmitted in 10 seconds through the comm.
Ahhh, the joys of design geekery. Love this.
Until I saw this vid, I really didn't know what it was. enjoyed this vid. subed to your channel, Eckhartsladder sent me.
I like the idea that it has the front door and ramp comes out it lets you know were they board etc and shows this is a shuttle not a combat tie.
It does raise questions of practical reasons to invert the wing angles for a shuttle, even if it's just to make the ship more visibly distinctive.
A very, very awesome video like always from you. :-) Thx so much, for all of your work.
It would have been pretty cool to see storm troopers deployed planetside from this kind of craft.

Done, and it looks nothing like a bomber. The TIE Scout on Wookieepedia looks almost like a regular TIE. The TIE/sr, which is a Legends TIE Scout also doesn't look like the bomber. The sr has an extended hull, not a double hull. starwars.fandom.com/wiki/TIE_scout starwars.fandom.com/wiki/TIE/sr_starfighter
In Squadrons if you look behind you in VR while flying the bomber there are several passenger seats.
Please do something on the several odd mon-cal cruisers seen retreating from the DS2 towards Endor moments before the Death Star blows. They each have 2 engines unlike any other mon cal ships.
Nice!!! Great idea for new (old?) TIE :)
You just blew my mind
2:15 A scene like this would be badass for Esb if they do another cgi rerelease I would love to see them ask you for this short segment
Why are you putting so much effort? Not that I say it's bad, but it's just so impossibly incredible! How do you find motivation to do put much work into this?
At 0:22 the rear of the shuttle looks like it has the Hyperdrive part of Vaders TIE-Advance as well (the dark blackish edge between the bright panels). So this TIE Shuttle might by Hyperdrive capable at least for short jumps.

There is a capital ship in the opening battle of Revenge of the Sith that I have never been able to find a reference or explanation for. I don’t have a time stamp, but the moment is when the clone pilots in the arc-170’s are coming to reinforce obi-wan and anakin right before the big clash with the vulture droids. If you watch right under them in the distance there is a massive capital ship with three large circular engine blocks on top and a totally unique nose unlike any other ship I’ve seen. This comment is probably gonna get buried but I’m super curious to see what it is.

I think this is more of a skif or a dingy, meant for quick ship to ship or ship to station trips and can be stored easily on an isd without taking the space that the hyperspace capable Lambda shuttle takes, while maintaining a personal level of comfort higher than taking the utilitarian landing craft.
Wow this is really interesting
Did you know that the Firefly class ship from the old show Firefly is actually a star wars ship? Blew my mind! I was wondering, could you do a video of the firefly ship converted to more like a rebel ship?
This is kinda like seeing a an old Rebel fighter in Jedi that was dressed like a Storm Trooper. Later Retconed into being Rex.
Are there any data regarding a life support system in the tie shuttle or would the passenger have to wear pilot suits?
I noticed this first time I've watched ESB on DVD (only way I've watched it) (It's not my fault I'm a millennial)
Good eye!
I always thought it was weird, i always noticed it
You could work up a TIE variant that resembles the TIE variant in the reticle of the X-Wing in Star Wars. It has wings that are slightly bent inward. It is not the standard TIE. It is not Vader's TIE, or an Advanced TIE. It is not a TIE bomber. It is not a TIE Boarding Craft. It is not a TIE Shuttle. It is not a TIE Interceptor. It is not the white Kenner TIE. It sure as hell is not the TIE Defender. It is yet something else entirely, and for whatever reasons, it was not been brought into existence in the ecology of TIE fighter variations. But it is right there in the most canonical of all Star Wars films, Star Wars, hiding in plain sight for 40 years.
There are like 5 or 6 ships in the rebel fleet at the end of ESB that have yet to be discovered
I can't help asking myself why not use a Lanbda class? If it is for personal too low of rank to use one, why not use an Imperial troop transport. The only answer is if it is for a very small amount of middle ranking personel which explains why we so few of these vessels
I was made aware of the ‘VIP’ shuttle with its outward bent wings (predating the TIE Defender by over a decade) a year or two ago, but it was controversial and not widely accepted despite being in the most acclaimed film of the holy trilogy. For some reason ‘fans’ choose to accept ‘evidence’ presented in source books and guides while ignoring the actual canon itself. Also those ‘shuttles’ in rogue one should have been boarding Craft, but that’s just my bias showing.
And yet Star Wars insists on using the Lamda Shuttle as the standard transport craft, when that was clearly a luxury shuttle for the Emperor
