Tie-dye pattern P137 : Shifting Spiral

This is an experimental spiral pattern, it is made by twisting the spiral in one direction, and when the core is done, you hold it in place with a round object, you then twist the remaining fabric in the other direction.
The pattern is called a shifting spiral because of the way the final design shows a spiral that twists one way and then changes direction to finish the other way. It is definitely a cool tie-dye pattern that needs to be studied and repeated many times, it has the potential to make something even crazier.

𝟏) 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Start with a clean 100% cotton blank white shirt.
Soak the shirt in water then wring it out. Leave it slightly damp.
𝟐) 𝐌𝐢𝐱 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐲𝐞𝐬
Using 8oz (230ml) bottles
Measure and add your dye powder first.
Add 1 teaspoon of soda ash to the bottle.
Fill the bottle with water and shake well.
Don't mix too much at one time - the solution only stays good for a few hours.
𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡 - 𝐃𝐲𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲
Pastel - 1/20 tsp (0,1g)
Soft - 1/8 tsp (1g)
Medium - 1/2 tsp (4g)
Strong - 1 tsp (8g)
Powerful - 2 tsp (16g)
𝟑) 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Choose your favorite technique and follow the folding process.
Pleat, crumple, and fold your way to success.
When you're done, bind the shirt using rubber bands or string to secure it in place.
𝟒) 𝐃𝐲𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Using your dye bottle, apply the dye gently over the shirt. Use your favorite technique or let loose your creativity, there's no wrong way to do it!
𝟓) 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐲𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭
Leave the shirt in a warm room. The dye reacts better at a temperature of 70°F (20°C) or more.
Let the dye react for 8 hours or overnight.
𝟔) 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Rinse your shirt in the sink under cold running water. Open up the shirt while rinsing. Continue rinsing and washing by hand until the shirt stops bleeding.
Soak the shirt in warm water to remove any remaining dye.
𝟕) 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Machine wash the shirt by itself or with other tie-dye shirts for the first wash.
Cold wash with a small amount of detergent.
After the first time, you can wash your tie-dye shirt with other pieces of clothing.

Wonderful! I started a tradition with my kids starting when they were 2, 3, & 4 ( they're a year apart) where every summer we have a tie dye party, this was in the late 1980s and now we're doing it with my grandchildren! Thanks for showing some great techniques that don't require a lot of tools etc. Beautiful!

Me too….soda ash makes a huge difference and thickening the water and using needle point caps. Check out Meo’s channel.

@@iridaart7528 There's a time my art teacher is finding for a good project so I told my teacher we could make a dyed shirt for the project,she said yes.Then I try to imitate one of their design but it gone wrong then i got 88 in my grade sheesh!!
I think this tie-dye technique can make an ordinary dress look beautiful

I can’t attest to what is used in this video however I can tell you Dharma Trading Company is on of the best sold here in the U.S.A. :) What do you use there?

You don't really need to hold the center in place if you aren't changing direction

Yo, what part of Canada are you? When I eventually host my bachelorette, i wanna do a tie-dye day.
This but what would happen if you did green, orange, and purple on the other side of it? Like, have purple half in the red and blue, green in yellow and blue, and orange in yellow and red? I'd do it myself but I don't have the set up yet.

We use plastic squirt bottles that we found on the internet. I'm not sure about the brand, but just about any bottle will do the trick.

@@Chandye I have some but the ones I have once you start tipping it over to use the dye comes shooting out and tends to go where you don't want it to

@@11chago11 Yes it can be a problem. Some solutions for you would be to either use smaller bottles with needle tip or to use thickening agents in your dye solution. We like to use sodium alginate powder in our dye mix it gives you much more control and prevents dripping.
