創建と興隆
その地に足利尊氏を開基とし、夢窓疎石を開山として開かれたのが天龍寺で、その目的は後醍醐天皇の菩提を弔うため暦応2年（1339）に創建された。
造営に際して尊氏や光厳上皇が荘園を寄進したが、なお造営費用には足りず、直義は夢窓と相談の上、元冦以来途絶えていた元との貿易を再開することとし、その利益を造営費用に充てることを計画した。これが「天龍寺船」の始まり。
造営費の捻出に成功した天龍寺は康永4年（1345）に落慶した。南禅寺を五山の上として天龍寺を五山の第一位に、この位置づけは以後長く続いた。

Founding and prosperity
Tenryu-ji Temple was founded on this site by Takauji Ashikaga and Soseki Muso, and was built in 1339 to pray for Emperor Go-Daigo's body.
Although Takauji and Retired Emperor Kogon donated manors to the construction, it was still not enough to cover the construction costs, so Tadayoshi consulted with Muso and decided to resume trade with the Yuan, which had ceased since the Genji period, and used the profits for the construction. The plan was to use the money to cover expenses. This was the beginning of "Tenryuji Ship".
Tenryuji Temple, which succeeded in raising the construction costs, was completed in 1345. This position continued for a long time, with Nanzen-ji being the top of the Five Mountains and Tenryu-ji being the first.
