    Dang man I’m so impressed with what Thypoch has been doing! And this one gets me thinking - collapsible used to be common with screw mount cameras, why not bring them back for digital? I think they’re onto something this is super cool. Love the modern sharpness and vintage character

    Thanks for the reivew. Very nice modern rendering. I have been on the look out for a collapsible Summitar or Summicron, but finding one without haze or scratches at a not-so-insane price is next to impossible. This would be great for street when I don't want to carry around my Summilux 50.

    Nice appearance of the lens, but I keep wondering whether the collapsible design is really worth it in this case, when collapsed it's isn't much smaller than some other non-collapsible lenses... but it's a nice gimmick for a Leica I guess. Anyway, great video, thanks for sharing!

    Great video! Would you happen to know if this Eureka lens is compatible with the Leica MP-240? My manual states that this camera shouldn’t be paired with their vintage Summicron F2 collapsible because when it is collapsed it will damage the sensor. Is the Eureka lens designed to eliminate this design? It would be great considering this line seems to want to blend vintage build and image rendering but could address design flaws of those vintage designs not foreseen as being issues with digital M cameras.

  • @erichung9043

    I have the ME240. I use the collapsible M39 mount Elmar 50, and LLL M39 mount 8-element 35mm Cron, they don't touch the sensor. I do not think this Eureka will either. The only thing you need pay attention is to extend the barrel first before mounting or dismounting to ensure the rangefinder coupling roller is not touched by the back side of the lens barrel.

    @@Johnny5tele I’m aware of the P models! But if you notice on the M11P the screw is smaller than the Leica dot on the regular M11. Since the logo is removed on the p models they have the Leica script on top as a reference to the MP film cameras. If you notice his doesn’t have the script on top (0:34) and his screw is larger than the screw of the P models and is the exact same size as the Leica logo on the M11 & M10. So that stands to reason that Benj replaced it himself and I’m dying to know where he got it from!

    This lens looks near perfect, beside the fact that they decided not to include a regular e39 filter thread...I do not understand these bizarre unforced errors these lens makers have like this. On a smaller note, the top of the lens mount has a little divot on it as if it is a LTM lens with a M adapter attached. I don't get that choice either, it doesn't look good and I feel like it could acquire gunk over time and possibly pass thru tiny dusts or something with some cameras. Otherwise, it seems like a really nice lens! They seem to have recreated the classic Taylor Hobson 50mm f2 lens very well.

    It’s clearly marketed towards still image makers who appreciate the character of vintage lenses of the 1950s. The fact that there is a modern manufacturer for a lens of this type definitely opens up the ability to access vintage inspired glass. Alas, vintage collapsible lenses are becoming more expensive with each passing year just as more of the vintage glass on the market having fungus and cleaning marks they are prone to makes this a wonderful value proposition. I have a vintage Summicron F2 collapsible with an m mount that I managed to snag for $300 but which now seems to sell for double that and not often in the same quality of condition. Would I buy this Eureka lens? Yes I would if I didn’t already have a nearly pristine vintage lens. This is to say that I’ll purchase this lens eventually but if I didn’t have a vintage Summicron I’d snag this without a doubt.

    @@CrispyFrenFry its 1k for a f2 lens. You can get a planar 50 for much less, as you say a second hand submicron, send it to service and would still be cheaper than this. yes the alu is 700 but still too expensive IMHO. 300 euros it would sell well, at this price I doubt it. LLL elcan offers the same basically with brass and smaller body.

  • @CrispyFrenFry

    @CrispyFrenFry

    @@Bbarm97 hate to break it to you but the LLL Elcan costs the same price as the Thypoch’s brass version while on sale. Full price the LLL Elcan costs $1000. Don’t get me wrong, I have no horse in this race beyond congratulating the range of modern options available to us. After all, if you were to get a vintage Summicron for $600 that needs servicing, depending on where you live or choose to send your vintage lens, the cost could range from $80-200. Depending on the option you select, it could take a couple of weeks or months to get your lens back. So in this example your out approximately $700-800, shipping not included. Factor in the filter and lens hood this Thypoch comes with, it really isn’t a bad proposition considering manufactures like Voigtlander or Fujinon no longer including metal lens hoods with newer lenses. Just food for thought.
