I tentatively disagree, largely because the thylacine was still alive in the last 100 years and died as a result of human intervention. It still has a place in Australia's ecosystem and, with care, could potentially be reintroduced to it's natural habitat. It wouldn't be a mindless exploit of nature. Jurassic Park was a critique of scientific fanaticism, focusing on scientists questioning if they could, but not if they should. In this situation, science is being used as a means to reverse human error. If this is a successful venture, the recently extinct white rhino could make a comeback as well. If they tried to clone monstrosities like deinosuchus or archaeopterix, I'd be right there with you. But what's being proposed is bringing back animals and plants that still have a place in this world.

Well i think we should bring back some species like mammoths if he can just because it would be amazing to bring an extinct ice age animal back. Though it may be too big for an elephant mother to give birth to. So we could do wooly rhinos, or cave lions since we have a perfectly preserved specimen. I feel like cave lions would be the most likely and most helpful since they could theoretically live in warmer climates than mammoths or wooly rhinos.

Theoretically we can manufacture genetic diversity. We know the building blocks of DNA so we can "simply" insert different genes where needed to create the differences we need. Figuring out what we need where is kind of trial by error, but assuming the host can reproduce quickly it can be done.
@GazB85
Жыл бұрын
The problem with cloning them is that when born the new thylacine’s will be as old as the DNA they were cloned from. So if the dead thylacine was 10 years old, that new born thylacine will be genetically 10 years old, which will lead to a load of health problems like with Dolly the Sheep.

I feel like cave lions would be the most likely and most helpful since they could theoretically live in warmer climates than mammoths or wooly rhinos.

@@hyboirds1536 There's also the fact that Thylacines were a doomed species. Rampant inbreeding and a similar disease to what Tasmanian Devils meant that had they not been hunted to extinction in the 1930s they would have died out naturally in the 1980s or early 90s.
We still waiting for the wooly mamoth...
Am I the only one feeling some real Jeff Goldbloom emotions right now?
Literally just got done watching Animalogics Paleologic episode on the Thylacine and Vice's documentary of Neil. What a night!
My question is how are they going to expand the gene pool from cloning? Without enough Gene diversity this could go very south if they're brought back

exactly what im thinking. and the question ofcourse is can these clones breed and produce viable offspring. plus they might behave differently because some behavior could have been taught behavior.

Theoretically we can manufacture genetic diversity. We know the building blocks of DNA so we can "simply" insert different genes where needed to create the differences we need. Figuring out what we need where is kind of trial by error, but assuming the host can reproduce quickly it can be done.
@GazB85

The problem with cloning them is that when born the new thylacine’s will be as old as the DNA they were cloned from. So if the dead thylacine was 10 years old, that new born thylacine will be genetically 10 years old, which will lead to a load of health problems like with Dolly the Sheep.

This is stale news and was already a complete failure like over a decade ago.. the specimens collected dont have a DNA sample in them due to the harsh type of alcohol used
That is one animal I have always wanted to see in my life....I am hopeful
That is actually pretty fucking wild. I would've rather you rediscover them but this is almost as good

@pandock6834

@@outback8370 no, we killed off these animals within the past century so I can sort of see it as a viable option since they are a natural predator to a specific rodent, forget what they're called. Anyways these rodents carry nasty nasty diseases. And they have proliferated out of control. The dodo was many ages ago. I think this could definitely be a slippery slope. And since I can't stop these biologists I can only express concern and hope that this action will really be a good idea and not backfire. I am not naive. Just optimistic that these people really know what they're doing.

@@outback8370 also fundamentally disagree with messing with nature but hey, we hunted these to extinction very recently. Counts as messing with nature. I'm hoping this will actually correct an error, one that's recent. Bringing back the dodo would be disastrous. If you get the point I'm trying to make?

@MetziTzah B'peh idk, there's a lot of footage, especially of the last one alive, of them just panicking and pacing in the most bare cages and so many paintings and photos of them lying dead in groups because they were so heavily hunted and for what? It's a really tragic story and I was taught it young and it just stuck out as a really sucky human move and such an innocent and beautiful creature
