1959 British film based on the novel, of the same name, by A. J. Cronin. It was directed by Jack Cardiff and stars Van Johnson and Vera Miles.
The film tells the story of Paul Mathry, a man who left Britain for the United States as a child evacuee, and who returns to Liverpooltwenty years later. Believing his father, Patrick, had died a war hero, he is shocked to discover he is alive and serving a life sentence in prison for murder. Paul embarks upon his own investigation and finds the true culprit, clearing his father's name.

I ran into Van Johnson years ago at my doctor's appointment I had with pulmonary physician in midtown Manhattan. Van Johnson was so surprised that I, an African American woman decades younger recognized him [ he was in his 80s by then ] I am a fan of old movies; We hugged and chatted, he was so friendly, he gave me a kiss on the cheek as we said goodbye. I remember thinking, when you age, it means so much that you are treated with love and respect. He was tall and had a cute face full of freckles, wearing an ascot and a houndstooth jacket, handsome in his later years.

He had an extensive screen career and I read recently when he was much older than in this film that he was in some episodes of 'Murder, She Wrote' with Angela Lansbury. She was credited with a role in a Van Johnson film of 1953 'Remains To Be Seen' another great older film.

Loved seeing the toy yacht. Its a Penguin brand from the 50s. I have an exactly similar one. Seeing it inspired me to take mine down to the local park park after it's being on the shelf for 65 years.

Watching this in my city of Liverpool & as yet I haven't heard one scouse accent, as it was supposed to be war time Liverpool, you would think the cast could have used their acting skills & even attempted a scouse accent.
There was so much more 'true' suspense in these older movies than current movies...and the characters had genuine class...Thanks for taking the time to share with us !!!!

Nothing beats this casting plus the expert direction by Cardiff & memorable score by Matthissen. I''ve mentally added ithis to my list of classics along with Fritz Lang's "Fury", Carol Reed"s "Fallen Idol" & anything by Powell ! RMH/Ohio USA
Brilliant. Another Great film from the Wonderful British era of 1950s Classic Movies. Cannot beat a film with Bernard Lee and the Brilliant Leo McKern. Loved it. Thanks for the upload.
Well worth watching. Thanks 😊
I must say, young as she was, Vera Miles was excellent, and held her own in this powerful film...
Oh my , i was looking for this movie for the longest time .i read the book 34 years ago .
A little film trivia for you: 18:00 . . . The prison warden is played by Geoffrey Keen, and prisoner Mr. Mathry played by Bernard Lee. In James Bond Moonraker, these two worked together again when Lee played M and Keen played Frederick Gray, Minister of Defense.
Thanks for the movie. I was born and raised in Liverpool--brought back memories!
This is a good movie. Nice fast pace, right to the end.
Wow this is so much more of a performance than I remember from Van Johnson a real jem Thanks bunches

What a wonderful movie. It's a real treat to be able to see these gems.
One of the most beautiful of A.J.Cronin's novels. I read it in its French translation ''L' Epee De La Justice - The Sword Of Justice'' But never got to see the movie. Thank you for the upload. I hope netflix won't ever remake it.
I just saw this movie for the first time. What a really fine story. Thank you so much for sharing this. You never know when you are going to discover some hidden gem, do you?
Great film that I'd never seen before. Thanks!
you could never take a stranger home today and offer him a room in your apartment
So redemptive were A.J. Cronin stories.......this was wonderful...thank you ....more of Cronin's work would be great! I noticed that the actor playing Bob the journo was The Scarlet Pimpernel's right hand man Lord Hastings! Thank you for a lovely night's entertainment...
Pretty good little movie. Thanks for posting.
Thank You
A real delight to discover this film. The story goes along at a great pace and carries you along. Exactly what you want from a film! Trivia: I was amazed to see that distinctive oval spiral staircase at 1.16.19. Only the other night I had seen it also turn up in the 1952 film "Miss Robin Hood" starring Margaret Rutherford! (1.02.11) The entrance foyers do not appear to match in both films, perhaps thanks to cutting, but the staircase is exactly the same. I wonder where it was, and if it featured in other films?
Great film thank you.
Thank You For posting 🙏😊
Good film, very good performances particularly that of Bernard Lee. It was directed by the great cinematographer Jack Cardiff, who for some reason doesn't even mention it in his autobiography Magic Hour.

I have never been much of a fan of Van Johnson BUT this is a COMMANDING performance from him and shale cause me to revist his Acting Carrier ...
Love the Van! This is practically Dickensian.
Australian actor Leo McKern was just right for the role as the newspaper editor. Later went on to an enormously successful series "Rumpole of the Bailey" in which he played the lead as a London barrister. 7 Series and 44 episodes.

@@SustainableEnslavementAgenda Many things are for the better. I worked hard to get a college education. I now have a much greater earning potential than if I had only a high school education. Since 1959: 1. *Mental health studies have shown that being positive makes one happier* 2. Cars are engineered more safely. They absorb a greater force of impact and safety glass is now required for all car windshields. 3. Kevlar was invented and has saved 1000s of lives. 4. There are a greater variety of jobs for women beyond maid, waitress, secretary or nurse. (all honorable occupations). 5. The answering machine was invented. Do you have any idea how difficult it was to reach people back in the day? 6. The Institutional Review Board was established to prevent unethical research on humans. 7. Car seats for infants and children are not only required, but constructed better than in the 1980s. 8. Effective mammograms. 9. House insulation has improved. 10. X-ray fluoroscope machines have been outlawed.

Great film and great music by Gamley....
Terrific film. Jack Cardiff was a great director and, even in this low-budget B movie, his skill shows.
Van Johnson was such a fine actor who made it look so easy. I always love his movies.
Great to see much loved Scottish actor Jamieson Clark as the discredited policeman Swan.
Van Johnson (1916 - 2008) was the embodiment of the wholesome boy next door American stereotype which made him a hugely popular in the 1940s and 1950s especially in war movies such as Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo - it was ironic that injuries from a car accident exempted him for actual war service. After a stage career he appeared in his first film (uncredited) in 1940, Too Many Girls and his last, Three Days to a Kill, was in 1992. By 1945 he was tied with Bing Crosby as the most popular Hollywood star and his big breakthrough came in Two Girls And A Sailor (1944). He was never out of work and he once joked that he did so many war movies one after the other that sometimes he forgot what branch of the military he was supposed to be in. A memorable role came with The Caine Mutiny (1954) and he refused to cover up his facial scars (from that road accident) for the role saying that it made his character more believable. It is often forgotten that he also appeared in many musicals such as The Pied Piper of Hamelin (1957) which was a spectacular success. He so-starred with Judy Garland in In The Good Old Summertime (1949) which was the first screen appearance of Garland's daughter, Liza Minelli. Ironically, for the imagined "all American boy", Van Johnson was gay at a time when it had to be covered up and in 1947 he married actress Eve Abbott (1914 - 2004). A statement by her issued after her death said, "They needed their big star to be married to quell rumours about his sexuality and unfortunately I was it." At the time of his death he was one of the last matinee idols of Hollywood's "Golden Era".

A J Cronin, one of my fave authors, read all his books in the 80's....great adaptation...
Leo McKern also plays a newspaperman in THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE (1961), which launched the career of Edward Judd.
Appreciate it thanksalot

23 Paces to Baker Street is one of my favorite movies with the two stars. It is in color and, oddly enough, made three years earlier than this one. Vera Miles has a great role in "23" and is quite alluring.

There are various reasons for making a B&W film in an era of colour. Budget is one; artistry is another. Noir is better in light and shadow; and film makers are still doing it today. If you ask me, 23 Paces would be better in monochrome.

50:05 I remember reading that Van Johnson had a car crash before WW2 (for us Americans) & ended up with a plate in his head, as a result he was not allowed in the military during WW2, I was reminded of that at the fight scene at 50:05.

In the movie Caine Mutiny he had a scar on his head, I always wondered if if it was real or just makeup for the movie. It must have been from his head plate.

Maybe so - but some kids forget to wash behind their ears. And it was in another time and space to where we are today - I found with my children that they let you know when they are ready to move from infancy to being an older young child when it came to matters of privacy if that is what you are referring too?

your forgetting the era 1940s when families were close and mothers were proud of their kids, they were lucky to have a real bath, when i was that age we bathed in tin bath in front of the coal fire in the 1960s

Overly pampering let the kid learn but inspect his ankles and why behind the ears? they never get dirty. I used ti spalsh the sponge around and wet my hair and make sure ankles and obvious dirt on face was clean and lots of soap to make me smell nice was enough to get thru mums inspection. This scene is uneccesary, not soapy, but soppy.
Wow! I’m surprised the scene where “Dad” had obviously rented a guy in drag made it past the censors!!!! Especially while Dad was lying face-down on the bed crying “NO!” I felt so bad for him. Good film. TYSM!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💕🙏🙋♀️
This was filmed in Walton studios
A child that age should be capable of bathing himself
Van Johnson was way too old to play the part, but he was very good anyway.
I’ve read most of AJ Cronin’s books - Hatter’s Castle was so harrowing I could only read it once ....btw that boy was old enough to bath himself .....
You have to think of Johnson as s young man.hmm
Problem is, in the past there was no true suspense because, in Hollywood and especially with Van Johnson, you know there is gonna be a happy ending. 🙄😎
