    Just got mine today and it works great. I only had medium roast on hand and I did notice a bit more crema when preheating the piston with the thundie. Looking to trying some light roast soon with it.

    To preheat the piston, I connect the portafilter spout to the portafilter, and then lay down a pre-cut silicone mat inside the portafilter to keep water from flowing out. I then pour in boiling hot water and attach the portafilter to the robot. This keeps the piston hot as well as the portafilter and when I need to pull a shot after prepping the basket with grounds, I just pour the water out and pull a shot (with or without the spout? ). Honestly, I think this is a much better option, because you just need that tiny piece of silicon mat.

    Interesting. If you want to pull without the spout though isn’t it a bit finnicky to remove it because it’s also hot by that point? I guess the robot doesn’t ship with the pressurized basket anymore but that would actually be quite a good use for it. That is, plug the hole on the pressurized basket somehow like you have done with your silicon mat, put it in the portafilter (without spout), fill with hot water, and put into the robot. Then when ready you can take out the PF, dump the pressurized basket and the water out together into the sink or whatever, and drop in the normal basket and proceed. Problem is the pressurized basket is like 45 € and that feels like too much if you’re just going to use it as a preheating tool. Would only be worthwhile if you didn’t have to buy it separately and just had it laying around anyways.

    @@loniousmonk Yes, exactly! Mine came with the pressurized basket, so it was just lying around. I didn't realize that they stopped shipping them together -- I definitely wouldn't buy it just for that purpose

    I wish the temperature graph you shared had an entry for just portafilter plus basket because I think that is the easiest way to make a super stable temperature for the robot. I just let it hang from the rim of my kettle while it's heating up

    Hey Brian love the videos I do have an off topic question, I’m very interested in getting a new grinder and I know you seem to be the only KZreadr who’s basically used the lagom p100 and the Webber EG1 I’m just not sure witch you would recommend for mainly espresso I do value your opinion.

    Is there a reason you use boiling water to heat the piston but use steam to heat the portafilter?

    Filter 2.0 Is kind of like turning the Robot into an Aeropress.

  • @gpapa31
    @gpapa31 Жыл бұрын

    Great gadget. But wouldn’t it be better to preheat both the piston and the basket by simply felling the basket with water and attach it to the piston while you prep your coffee? You can have a mod to seal the bottom end so it doesn’t drain, like seal the spout and attach it.

  • @lukeW7344
    @lukeW73442 жыл бұрын

    how does the filter 2.0 differ from an aeropress? with that kind of pressure and "immersion" time its seems very similar to an aeropress recipe

  • @BrianQuan

    @BrianQuan

    The biggest difference here is the grind size! You are grinding slightly coarser than turbo shot espresso which would be way too fine for any normal AP attachment. Luckily Churls also made an attachment that allows you to use a 51mm basket with the AP and you can pull filter 2.0/2.1 on the AP. Video on that to come soon.

    I heard of this but never took it seriously or looked into it because the name is hilariously cute (and brilliant) but I also don't have a robot. So that's probably mostly why.

  • @fredwilson1191

    Since the piston never touches the water , because there is always a air pocket between the top of the water and the botttom of the piston, i guess i don't understand the reason to preheat the piston (has no contact with the hot water). Cheers

    My concern with the robot is the food grade silicone rubber seal of the plunger I don't know if I can trust the company because it's made in China and they don't have the best standards when it comes to these things.
