Thunderstorms near Montreal - August 17th-August 18th, 2020

A video compilation showing non-severe thunderstorms affecting in and around the Huntingdon-Ormstown sub-area of this general area during the late-evening to early-overnight. Thunderstorms were occurring ahead of a cold front, and largely a developing shortwave trough to the South. Significant solar heating during the day also boosted instability, and together with gradually steepening mid-level cooling rates and high humidity, instability reached moderate standards at its highest. This helped to maintain sufficiently high instability into the evening period, and as lift increased, thunderstorm coverage briefly increased. Deep shearing fields were also rather weak, and so thunderstorms were largely briefly-sustained and somewhat slow-moving. The first part of the video shows some morning moderate to heavy rainfall associated with the warm front. This is followed by a collection of photos showing the isolated afternoon deep convection that was occurring in response to moistening and solar heating by early-afternoon.
Footage was taken in SW Pierrefonds, located in Montreal’s West Island. Radar imagery is courtesy of NOAA.
