Today's video is the second in my versus series. It is the turn of the Thundercats! I discuss the 85 and 2011 shows. I talk about the animation style, the action, the voice acting and compare which I feel was better. Both excellent shows with their own unique styles.

Nice, but Thundercats (1985) actually premiered in January of that year, not September. I thought it was an odd time to debut a series as well, but it happened 🤷🏿‍♂️ I wanted to like Thundercats (2011), but I felt there were layers to what made the OG special that the reboot/reimagining lacked. It wasn't necessarily bad, but I felt it leaned too much into one particular genre whereas the 85 series did a better job blending the fantasy/sci-fi/folklore elements. Perhaps the main missing ingredient was THE MUSIC. It can't be understated how Bernard Hoffer's score elevated that series beyond our imaginations. Each character, setting, weapon/vehicles having their own theme?...C'mon. TCats 85 was light years ahead of it's time & that's why it worked so well.

Hmmm. I’m certain it debuted in September of 85 … I’ll need to look that up again . But I agree Thundercats was light years ahead of the time back then. It gave the 2011 show a lot to build off . I preferred different elements from both shows as I point out in the video. But I love both shows.

The toys didn't sell because 2011 show had overall sloppy design. Which should have been a category.

So, since this is your perspective and since you gave away your bias in the lead up where you couldn't help but gush, I'll just focus on correcting a couple things: 1. It is fan theory that the show was canceled due to poor toy sales. There is also an equally unsubstantiated conspiracy theory that it was axed to make way for Ninjago. And there is another ALSO unsubstantiated theory that it was canceled after having its time slot moved around making it hard to establish an audience. I don't have any comment on the veracity of any of these theories, beyond noting they are unsubstantiated. The 2011 creators made statements at a panel that people have run with, and I frankly doubt they even have the reasons because TV execs are rarely forthright and explanations often reach the creatives second-hand. 2. The show had mixed reception and if you are curious enough to confirm that, you only need to constrain your googling to the relevant period and dig into any artifacts you can find of forum discussions. The main complaints, to my memory were the love triangle, uneven pacing, and blah character design. I have my own complaints but they're mine and not relevant. My own perspective: 2011 was in my own perspective, a noble effort to make a more mature version with a lore that pulled from the original, placing it on a new framework, one that felt like it borrowed from ATLA. It was much more successful than Roar but certainly not on par with the original (despite the 80s "sat morning action cartoon" flaws of the original. But it's subjective, love what you love. Anyway, I would not want a second season of this show, especially based on having seen the breakdown of what a season 2 would have been.

Yes I May have shown a preference to the 2011 show, but it does not mean i'm dismissive of the 85 show, I love it. I just think from a story telling perspective, the 2011 show was better. I Will Friedle said himself on the " I hear voices" Podcast that due to poor toy sales, the show was cancelled. There were fans who didn't like aspects of the show yes, but there were also alot of fans who loved the 2011 interpretation. It is subjective and whether you like the 80s show over the 2011 show or vice versa, I dont think there is a right or wrong answer. Both shows are good

@@smugfaceent I won’t debate 2011, I understand that those who love it really love it. I don’t think Will has a source for that beyond hearing that toy sales were poor (they were and still are in the resale market, Bandai did a bad job with the line imo - although they did better figures than LJN).
