This is one of the best documentaries I´ve ever seen. Such well thought and meticulous voiceover accompanied with beautiful footage. Wow! And thanks!

It's one of the best war documentaries I've ever seen. I especially like how they covered the day-to-day lives of the ground crews.

My father (lost him in 06' at 88yo) was a combat veteran who served in the South Pacific campaign on Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He was a P-47 Thunderbolt flightline mechanic/engineer in the US Army Air Corp. Serving in the 20th AAF, 7th AAC, 414th Fighter/Bomber Grp, 413th F/B Sqdn. The three Squadrons of the 414th (consisting of 2 P-47 sqdns and 1 P-51 sqdn.) were the first on Iwo after the USMC secured the airfields. They provided close air support to the Marines while finishing off the Japanese on the island and ran B-29 Bomber fighter support as they bombed the main Japanese Islands. His unit, the 413th F/B Sqdn, received 2 unit Bronze Stars.

Very brave men in deed we salute them thank you for your full service. I too realize speaking English is much better than speaking German as an main language…….

My Dad was a S/SGT with the 57FG, 64th FS from day one until after the end of the war. His duties were, as explained in the movie, placement of the cameras for intelligence, etc. He also developed the films and acted as an analyst to his bosses. His other duties was maintenance and care of the 8 .50 cal machine guns (4 on each leading wing).

The pilots get all the credit but it's the ground crews who keep those planes flying. Very few people understand the logistics required in aviation. You know the pilots had the utmost respect for their ground crews.

My dad went to Corsica to build the airfields used in Operation Strangle. I see now why he liked Corsica so much !!!

One of the Great War documentary’s and well done. I have undying respect for those airmen and everyone who fought and died in that war so I may live free.

Sometimes you enjoy a good, old documentary, including the second-person narration

Back in the early 1990's I was driving on River Road in Bethesda, Maryland - there was an older man driving a white Pontiac Trans AM & his license plate was "THE JUG". I was happy when we missed the light next to each other & I got the chance to yell "Did you fly Thunderbolts is WWII?" He answered "Yes" -- the light changed & we both moved on. I felt, at the time, that we made a great connection, if only for a moment; I'd like to think he felt that way too. I was about 40 & I think he appreciated that I recognized that once you flew a Thunderbolt a put put car would not do !!!

4:42 - Starting from the top - Punta Mortella - Punta Cavallata - Loto beach. It is in the Agriates "desert". When I was young in the 90s on hollidays I wandered a lot in this hills there. There were some sequels of the war more to the north near Monte Porcini craters with relics of airplane bombs around (the tails and the noses) the place offers a great sight so there must have been some German post here.

The Reason is it’s so good is because it was made by the 2 Greatest Hollywood Directors.. possibly of all time. Gentleman John Sturges Directed some Epics like “ The Great Escape “, Magnificent 7. William Wyler.. probably the Best Director who ever lived, directed the incredible 11 time Oscar winning “ Ben Hur”. ( ofcourse that’s not counting the most famous Hollywood director( Irishman John Ford, the only Director who’s 4 Different Pictures won 4 Best Picture Awards). Enjoy my Children 😁👍

+mbazell Not even close, 8 .50 cals was nothing they were using 20/30mm cannons back then. But Henschel Hs 129 had an insane 75mm cannon.

You are correct.

My Father was a first lieutenant forward artillery comander spotter. Fought his way from Normandy Hurtgen forest and battle of bulge. Liberating Boukenwald concentration camp. The horror of war haunted him for many years. Combat veterans don't brag. About their service. The. One thing I remember him telling me was how happy he was to see a P47 effing up the Germans he said they ripped them a new back side. I have always had reverence for the Jug.

General Jimmy Stewart was an amazingly versatile individual. He could go from talking to Harvey the invisible rabbit in a comedy movie, to piloting a nuclear armed bomber in the blink of an eye. Absolutely brilliant in both roles.

I had watched this doc a long time ago. But this time I noticed footage from different versions of the plane...older versions vs the newer ones with the bubble canopy. Anyone else notice that?

Sweet deal, these guys had it easy. Bombers were turkeys. These guys had a tank.

some of that indiscriminate shooting was a little ridiculous if not even self destructive. Like the lighthouse. They could use they lighthouse more than the axis who had very little active navy at the time, surly a lighthouse was more useful to the allies who were landing and had navy all over the place..plus running out of ammo seems sort of dumb, no matter how small the chance of running into the Luftwaffe was at that point over Italy in a fighter, they were around..anyway, I actually don't mean to be too critical, this is what war is./was...good video..

A lighthouse makes a great observation post to observe shipping and aircraft and radio that intel back to HQ. So yea, I would take it out. It can always be rebuilt.

You really need to know your history pretty good before making erroneous passive comments like this dumb ass one. These brave airmen were assigned specific targets from command. They were also told to search and destroy targets of opportunity on the trip back. They weren’t just shooting up the place indiscriminately besides strafing at low altitudes for them is the most dangerous. At that time the Luftwaffe was thinned down with fuel shortages and inexperienced pilot replacements therefore hardly seen. If you knew anything about German flak towers you would understand why they capped that light house.

The sad fact ist, that some of those young men acted like criminals, shooting at farmers, fishing boats, farm houses... And such young men seem to have had fun, just like we have fun in video games.

Tell that to the russians who just tried to invade Ukrain. Its goes both ways. War is ugly!. Every war civilians are killed,tortured. Weather it's on purpose or accident. You sound like you're just hating on the U.S.. Get real buddy!.

So anything goes then? A freakin lighthouse, anyone in a field, anyone in a random house that might have a mother with her children, ratatatatatata light them up. And there is no shame in it! No wonder the US always had a reputation for shooting anything that moves, this film hardly discredits it. Pretty sickening tbh.

The horrors of war are what makes it something never to be taken lightly, and it should be studied far more than what you apparently have. Many gun camera films show 'innocent' civilian houses blowing up violently after being strafed because of the ordnance that the enemy had hidden there. They were using civilians as human shields. Any supposed American 'atrocities' pale in comparison to those committed by Japan and Germany. It is better to be silent and thought ignorant, than to have spoken and removed all doubt.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'm not some hand wringing leftie but they seemed to just shoot ANYTHING that took their fancy. Couple decades later they'd be hanging out a helicopter gunship shooting cattle shouting "get some get some"..
