Some fun facts: 1. That song the field mouse sings to convince Thumbelina to marry the mole was so bad, it won the movie a Razzie; it’s first animated movie to win one. 2. The movie has a creepy subtext where you can only be happy if you’re married to your own kind, otherwise you have to marry for money. Not sure why they added that. 3. This was a kickass retelling.

Julia: "So in the night she gets kidnapped by four frogs, four performing frogs." Karina: "Oh, I hate when that happens..." My suspicions are confirmed: Karina is smol, only a couple inches tall at most, and Drawfee uses camera tricks to make her look mostly human-sized, though still pretty dang smol.

I can't believe you animated the WHOLE RECAP Absolutely legendary. Loved the casting choices. Especially paper cutout of Gilbert Gottfried's head. Truly a stellar performance.

Idk why but the fact that the 'beetle' costume for Thumbejulia is just a half pill shape with a face hole and some wings is absolutely sending me. It's so simple yet so effective this entire video is so cleverly done.

The Julia frogs are so choice, I love them This whole vid is a delight edit: FUCK I took a drink of water and then the Duolingo owl showed up and I choked

The biggest part I feel was left out of this is that LITERALLY everyone also outwardly and vocally says that Thumbelina is an idiot and they also may not be wrong. But you don't have to SAY IT to her FACE!

I can't get over how well Julia remembers the movie for someone who hates it 🤣

This is sooo good!!! I laughed so hard at the Drawfee crew playing the characters, the special appearances of the Duolingo owl and Porfo and just the funny little details you put in it. Marvelous!! I'll be watching it often ☺️😆

i adore the thumbelina movie so much but Julia's rant is valid and i agree with every point but tbh its like the most faithful recreation of the thumbelina fairy tale lmao one thing id probably mention is that the frogs are like a really awful stereotype of Mexican/hispanic people edit: someone pointed out that it's probably spanish, which makes more sense in hindsight

pretty much all the "evil" characters have some ethnic characteristics to their designs, as animated movies often did back then (and up until very recently, see disney). beetle has a big human nose (italian? jewish?), mr mole is very round (using body size as the butt of the joke) etc

The style of this synopsis given by Julia is how I want stories recounted to me forever now lmfao

I'm sitting here through the whole thing, thinking, "Who are Karina and Nathan going to play?" You made the perfect choices.

I really appreciate the inclusion of everyone as characters, Nathan as the Mole and Jacob as the prince was peak casting 😭 this was a masterpiece thank you for your work

Now Jacob and Julia are engaged, I hope that they have a sword shaped runner down the aisle. I think that’s be neat.

My favourite thing about this bit is just how genuinely upset Julia gets because I relate so much to becoming unreasonably, sputteringly angry about some stupid piece of media you were subjected to as a kid which made no sense and/or had a problematic message. Like sure that thing might be kind of annoying anyway, but when it's a specific thing from your childhood you get ENRAGED whenever it comes up and have a whole powerpoint ready to go. Julia encapsulates that energy here perfectly.

You know how dark and edgy renditions of fairy tales are a big thing now? What I've learned from Julia is that that's impossible with Thumbelina because the original was already the worst kind of needlessly dark BS imaginable.

Read any fairy tale, the originals were already the darkest. Back when folk tales were told by word of mouth, they were all intended to warn kids off of things that were dangerous. Stay out of the forest, don’t trust strangers, don’t be greedy, don’t break the rules… and if you do any of that, you’ll die. Big reason why edgy reboots suck is they’re trying to do something that was already done by the source text.

Actually the original original Thumbelina by Andersen isn’t as dark or depressing as that animated movie by Don Bluth. I actually loved the story of Thumbelina and found it uplifting for some reason as a child. So there can be no edgy retelling because the darkest, most depressing one was made years ago and haunts Julia to this day lol

Ok, but now drawfee needs to do a stream where they just react to fan animations like this!

Making Thumbelina and the Prince look like Julia and Jacob is so flipping good!

The production value of what seems to be a middle school or high school play is incredible

So it wasn't until this episode came out that I realized I had completely forgotten the story of Thumbilina. I haven't seen the movie since I was like 6, so in my head I thought that it had basically the same story as The Borrowers. So when Julia was talking about how wild the story was, I was so confused and then she explained the story and I was like wait what? I do not remember that story AT ALL, but I know I've seen Thumbilina before

I think the most fascinating part about your incredible animation is that the expressions you gave look EXACTLY like what the narration sounds like (tone and inflections and everything)

WOW that's a lot of work, what an amazing job you've done!!! I love all the cute little in jokes, with the frogs done like that one Julia drawing of the weirdly upright frogs, and Porfo sneaks in for a sec, and it's just... wonderful, every detail, I am so impressed and delighted. The way you designed your character assets is great, looks so simple but it's like, deceptively simple, they can pull off whatever you want them to do, and the expressions are spot on. Also good choice for a clip to animate, Julia basically recounted the whole movie spot on. The orig story is already a bit of an aimless mess but in trying to make it musicy-dancey-charming the studio made it like somehow even worse. It was a shame because the animation itself and the sets and such were pretty to look at but the story had no substance, a janky timeline, no real point or moral center, and very little internal logic, in addition to the somewhat weird portrayal of women and marriage.

Karina's little "good for him" when the prince gets frozen in ice is so good.

The Julia frogs got me.

This is so good. The adorable caricatures of the Drawfee crew, the funny faces, the nods to other Drawfee bits, the whole aesthetic, the cameo of Jack Frost, and the Gilbert Godfrey beetle… it’s all just delightful.

Rewatching this now that Julia and Jacob are engaged to add a lil extra pizzazz to the experience.

KZread was like "You wanna see this again?" and I jammed the play button so hard. This animation of a play of a stream of recounting a movie is a level of meta I can only dream of.

Look, this is a treasured childhood classic to me but, Julia is right. And this animation is absolutely incredible

I really need to rewatch this movie. When she mentioned it initially i had completely forgotten about the mole and her bird friend i just remembered the really creepy frogs and the LET MEEE BEEEE YOUR WIIINGSSSS song she sings with the prince. And the song at the start that all the animals sing about her thumbalinAAAAAAA 😂

I like that the Drawfee folks reference how much they enjoy the fan-made animations of their bits/stories. This is done so well!

Setting it all up as a play that they’re watching is so clever and having them all star. Also loved the little self insert cameo at the end, very very cute

THE DRAWFEE UP FROGS!!!

This reminded me of this Thumbelina Adaptation I've been trying to find for YEARS now. It was in the style of studio ghibli but i have never seen it in any ghibli catalogue i've seen. Thumbelina isn't actually thumbelina she's a normal girl whose a bit spoiled and lives with her single mother, and one day her mother got fed up with the girls misbehavior and asked a witch for something to punish the kid, which is a cookie or something that shrinks her down. anyway the mother and daughter fall asleep and Thumbelina shrinks and is taken by these grogs to marry their son. And its just this big adventure of Thumbelina trying to get home to her mother and the Frog boy wants to be a muscician or smth and they ride a butterfly. Like this is the only adaptation where Thumbelina wants to stay with her mother where is it???

This was amazing! I love the play set-up and using the Drawfee members as actors and Julia's frogs!

Hell yeah this is sick!!! You're so awesome ! On a sidenote, I watched thumbelina SO much when I was little and apparently forgot 80% of the story. I mostly remembered the beginning and the whole frog thing but thought that the frog wedding was crashed by Cornelius or whatever and then she cried to the bird and that was it. I don't remember bugs or moles so maybe I blocked that out lmao Oh i do remember the lady frog had massive bazoingas I'm pretty sure
