Thuburbo Majus was identified in 1857 but large-scale excavations began only in 1912 and resumed in 1957, bringing to light about a fifth of the city. Thuburbo Majus is an ancient large Roman site founded as a Roman veteran colony by Augustus in 27 BC. The ruins include the forum, the capitol, the amphitheater, temples, baths, houses, and other sites.
