I have a pair of the OZ Trail poles, May I suggest you get an 'Allen' Key and slightly tighten each of the screws, test the flip lock for tightness, you should be able to put extra downward pressure on the poles. They are made from Aluminium and I find then robust enough for the job. Kezza

Super practical, good work Rachel. I would recommend a much more compact mattress and sleeping bag, and definitely a smaller tent. I've hiked many parts of North Island (I'm from Lower Hutt originally) as well as the USA; Grand Titon's national park, Yellowstone national park, Boulder Colorado, and west coast of Canada and having compact gear (and lightweight) makes it SO much more enjoyable. I hope you got to complete the trail, its on my bucket list too.
