I was thinking the exact same thing. I just decided to randomly search him on youtube to see if he was still putting out vids.

I'm struck by how skillfully you're doing this and I also really love seeing artists branch out in other types of art. I hope you can keep sharing these videos - I know it's a lot of extra work but I for one really enjoy seeing them. What a tactile experience I can almost feel the cold gooey-ness

coming from a professional ceramic artist, your doing very well for your beginner courses. From what I can see I would say focus on centering your work and maybe slow down as your pulling up your walls for your piece so it remains centered, and i guarantee you will have an easier time throwing and trimming. great job!

On the subject of unusual words in ceramics, I recall there was a job called the 'Sagger-makers' Bottom-knocker' These were lads who assisted the Sagger-maker, who built the fireclay boxes to protect items during firing. The bottom of the boxes didn't need the same level of skill, so the SMBK spent his day hammering clay into frames to shape and flatten it. Sagger is also spelled saggar, sagar, or sager.

The thing I miss most about Jr.High and High School art class was working with clay. The schools had their own kilns, and it was always my favourite unit. Both schools also had pottery wheels, but they never used them nor let me use them since they were "too messy." This video really has me missing clay and reigniting my desire to use a pottery wheel!

I can not imagine a pottery wheel at a school not used as being too messy? How very absurd it is to hold that "stuck" mindset? And I imagine the other areas of that school remain pristine in cleanliness? Pffft!! If I were a teacher or pupil at that school and saw that I would see changes were made somehow. The saddest thing about coming from California Schools to the Alabama ones is seeing there are no art classes at all. What happens to the student that can not express such a desired hunger to be taught? Yet, athletics takes on a huge crowd here. My own son was not one who suffered from this. I his mother saw to ot that he had plenty of Art after school and on the weekends. California teaching is going above and beyond. Of the which my heart applaus. 👏

Hullo Peter! It looks like you have a wonderful work room for creating ceramics! I took several ceramic classes in college and so I realize how difficult it is to create several items that look the same! You did an awesome job ! Jargon is a specific set of words that are used in a field of endeavor to essentially exclude the neophyte and keep techniques secret from the un-initiated or strangers! I found the exact same thing with learning about computers and computer languages! I am glad that you are enjoying your learning experience. I truly feel that an Artist never stops learning, the more fields of knowledge that you are familiar with the greater your knowledge base is and allows you to create more knowledgeable art. Keep learning Peter! I do enjoy watching your videos!

Your creative spirit and willingness to experiment with any medium is pretty inspiring.

Something you would probably love for glaze designs is laying a string/thread across your pot and then glazing. By the time the glaze dries you pull it off and have a neat little scribble pattern😄

You will find that at least one of those little pots you made will represent these times in your life for always & the satisfaction that YOU made it will last forever. If I were you I would keep the very best one AND the wonkiest. Both will make you smile :)

Looking forward to you glazing them! ❤️ Btw - the reason pot's can blow up in thevkiln is because the a air bubble was in the clay vessel that never got out. At least that is what my teacher said oodles of years ago when I was in art class learning pottery back in the 70s. The teacher always encouraged us to kneed the clay well on the block to make sure and get those bubbles that "might be" worked out. This video was uber satisfying to watch and took me back a few decades. 😎

When I was a freshman in high school I took a ceramics class and really enjoyed it. One week we all made our own stein-like mugs with glaze and carved in designs and were excited to see the finished product. A day or two passed and when we walked into the classroom our teacher was crying. She told us all that our mugs had exploded/broken in the kiln and apologized profusely through her tears. Although we were all a little disappointed, it was really sweet that she cared so much about our little works of art that most would probably consider insignificant. That was 17 years ago but I still think about it from time to time. That teacher and her class taught me a lot about exercising my creative mind and also being a thoughtful and empathetic person. Art is wonderful

Slowly rotate the wheel as you wire off the bowl and it will be straight. Plus i suggest using more water. But you’re doing great!!!

Man it's been months, probably even years that I did not watch one of your videos. You could probably know from the youtube panel. I watched you back when you did plants reviews and mooved to a new flat etc To be honest: I got bored of the pen testing arc that was going on a lot a few years ago. As I'm coming back to drawing and a more artsy and creative spirit, I came back to this video I saved for later when you released it. I missed your soothing voice and comments about stuff. KZreadr Andy Ward discusses and shows himself finding clay "in the wild" in Arizona. He teaches about the Native American clay pots from the past. The Native Americans even had a trade route. Very interesting guy.

I took a pottery throwing class for one day last September, and ever since I've been desperate to get back on the wheel. Nothing is like it.

Cole Pottery from near Sanford makes all their own NC clay. I have some amazing pieces made in the 80s by Nelia. A bread bowl that is over a foot in diameter and the walls are 1/4 inch and less. One of the most memorable days of my life was the day I toured Come pottery. I have pieces from all over the world. I especially like experimental pieces like wood fired, salt glazed, raku, native clay… Good to see you getting your hands dirty. John Denver wrote a song the Potter’s Wheel “Take a little clay, put it on the wheel, get a little taste how God must feel…”

*AIR POCKETS!* If there's a big enough air pocket hidden inside a large chunk of clay, there's no escape route for the pressure that builds up (due to the air inside the pocket heating up much faster than the surrounding clay), and so it explodes. *KILN KABOOMS!!*

Just a curious question. What's the reason for slicing them off with the wire while stationary? I would think you could get a straighter cut if it was spinning (slowly). I suppose maybe it doesn't matter since you clean it up later, but still.

Ceramics was my least favorite Art Class. It was mostly the people's who spent SO MUCH TIME on their pieces only for them to EXPLODE in the kiln.
