Throwing a Ball in a Boat - Demonstrating Center of Mass
When I throw a massive ball to the left such that it lands in the other end of the canoe, what will happen to the positions of the objects? What if the ball does not land in the canoe? This video provides answers and solutions to those questions. Want Lecture Notes? www.flippingphysics.com/cente... This is an AP Physics 1 topic.

Man, I hope your channel keeps growing and hopefully you get an even greater platform than youtube. I have been binge watching your videos for days now and you truly deserve more than you give. There are only so few good you tube educators and I know that the best of the best will get recognized all around the world soon enough and trust me you will be there. Cheers mate :)

What if the ball after landing in the canoe collides elastically and rebounds for the thrower which makes its contact with the ball and ball exerts force on the thrower and hence on the canoe which speeds it up and since from the first throw the canoe have been moving to the left the cycle repeats and the boat never stops !? Great video! I have one question, though. Since this question requires a quantitative understanding of center of mass, would it be able to be tested on the AP Physics 1 Exam? Thank you so much!
@FlippingPhysics
4 жыл бұрын
The first half of the video is entirely qualitative. That is the part which could (and will) be tested in AP Physics 1.
So well explained with all variables involved with y and x variables, exterior and the interior system and the motion in relation to the earth vs. motion in relation to the center of the mass of the boat. Without having all these details included in the explanation, physics can be confusing!

When he throws the ball out of the boat- at what point is the ball no longer part of the system? Is it when he throws it, since that force is technically 'external', or is it when the ball hits the water instead of the boat?
@carultch
2 жыл бұрын
The ball becomes "external" to the system, the instant it departs from his hands, propelling the boat to the right. The ball rejoins the system when it lands in the boat and comes to rest.. The boat itself comes to rest after absorbing the impact of the ball that then nullifies its own momentum.
Best ever video
So in the beginning, the centre of mass moves to the left, because the ball moves to the left, but in order for the system to keep its centre of mass the same relative to the earth, it moves to the right. So it basically moves a bit to the left and a bit to the right, that way it actually doesn't change its position? I am having a bit of trouble understanding, it would be great if someone told if this is correct
I am from india....and a regula viewer on your chanel....this video is realy realy amazing.....please make more videos on centre of mass.....

I will do my best. Love to you from the USA!
Amazing sir love from 🇮🇳
I have a quick question. Since you throw the ball up, isn't the center of mass of the original system going up and then coming back down? The boat and you should theoretically move down if that was the entire system. Do the effects of gravity and the buoyant force of water play into effect here to keep it in line with predictions? I do see the boat and you initially move downward, but are brought back up to the same height because of the buoyant force. I guess what I'm trying to ask is, the center of mass kind of changes, but do the non-negligible forces acting on the system account for it? Thank you!
@Jidnesh
Ай бұрын
In real life only when the ball is in contact with the boat or the person holding it it is considered a part of the system When it is in the air it won't change the Com of the boat and man system in the vertical axis
You are absolutely amazing and the most important thing for being amazing is that your way of visualisation of topic is fantastic. Well done bro. keep it up. Best wishes from INDIA.

Well done once again Mr.P. My inner nerd is pondering the miniscule external friction from the water during the slide. Should the final velocity be (albeit negligible and perhaps not even asked in AP) a tiny, tiny bit left due to this brief external force? Cheers!
@FlippingPhysics
6 жыл бұрын
The friction from the water during the slide is negligible compared to the waves pushing on the boat. It took several takes to get one where the waves did not visibly push the boat!

@@FlippingPhysics The canoe is supported by a buoyant force, which requires a displaced equal mass of water, whose movement directly depends on the movement of the boat. I would expect that the inertia of the displaced mass of water would also impact this problem. Analogous to a sideways Atwood machine, the displaced mass of water would have equal and opposite kinematics as the boat. I would expect that this factor would effectively double the inertia to the boat + Mr P system. Is this a realistic factor that would come in to play in this problem? If not, what would enable the boat to move without this effect impacting its motion?
The physics works! Thank you.

Can you please explain the ball falling out of the canoe situation
When the ball is not a part of the system why will the force applied by ball on mr. p and force applied by mr.P on ball will not be equal ??? Since Newton's third law must be applicable...and According to Newton's third law action reaction pairs are always equal !! Please explain if someone sees my comment !!

what if you drop the ball in the water instead of throwing. the center of mass will change but net force in x-axis would be 0
@3:29 what if initially the system is in motion and net force is zero than what will happen to centre of mass . your's new neet subsciber
@FlippingPhysics
2 жыл бұрын
If the net force acting on the system is zero, using Newton's Second Law, you should be able to determine what happens to the center of mass of the system.

Wow
Sir why you are not taking gravity as external force
@singhpreet8301
3 жыл бұрын
Because it's balanced by Normal Force of the boat otherwise the boat would be flying.
But why constant velocity?
@carultch
2 жыл бұрын
Because once the ball leaves his hands, there ceases to be a horizontal force on the canoe + Mr P system, and the canoe proceeds to the right.
Why is this video like having a dance party on the beach? Because they are both throwing a ball close to water!

It is not really a close system, because when you throw a ball you pushed some air. This air will push the boat and you. Try this in a closed system maybe inside a car or something. I doubt the car will move at all no matter how many balls you throws inside the car. Here is what happen inside a car. You throw a ball to the left and the car will move to the right. The ball hit the glass car to the left and the car will move to the left too. So the car will ended at the same position.
@carultch
2 жыл бұрын
A car has a lot more bearing friction than a canoe in the water would, so even if you put your car in neutral on a flat road, you probably won't be able to throw enough balls to get the car to budge. A car also has a lot more mass relative to the person in it, and relative to the mass of a ball that a person could practically throw.
Glad to see it wasn't a bowling ball. Grummans are getting rarer.
