What if you're just trying to go about your day and someone starts with you, "Hey, do you want some curry with that??" while using a stereotypical Indian accent but with no intention of giving you any food or being hospitable to you in any way? But it isnt the definiton of racism. But racism broadly speaking is differentiating people based on race. This isn't inherently bad. Acknowledging stereotypes can be funny and bring us together for example. If a black guy teases his white friend for getting a sunburn is it racism? yes because he's acknowledging a difference between the races. But is it bad? Probably not. If an olympic lifting coach suggests a different technique for someone of a different race to accomodate their limb proportions is it racist? Yes. But is it wrong? no because the coach is trying to help them in their sport Racism isnt inherently bad. prejudice and bigoted ideologies about race are what is toxic

Back in 2013, I hadn't heard of Gabriel until my friend dragged me to his show. Gabriel closed his set with his own "greatest hits" jokes that the audience knew the punchline to, so I felt a bit left out with everyone else saying "cause you can smell it!". There's something that everyone needs to learn: when it comes to racism and offensive things like that, context *does* matter, and jokes made with friends can make allll the difference in the world. I had a very diverse group of friends in my early 20's, and it was just kind of a running gag that we'd constantly make stereotype jokes with each other. Every time we passed alchohol, "better keep Andrew away from it" because he's Irish. I'm black, so when we'd walk past watermelons and they'd remark how excited I must be that they're back in season. We'd laugh, we'd flip each other off, it was all fun because we all knew that none of us actually *believed* any of it, none of us had any malice...it was like playing cards against humanity. It was funny *because* it was wrong and we all knew it. It was absurdist humor.

One of the best ways to deal with something evil, like racism, is to make fun of it. I used to manage a restaurant and I had a particular black employee who would jokingly accuse me of racism every time I would single him out for an extra task. He once asked me if I'd ever heard of the emancipation proclamation because I had him do a little extra mopping. It was funny. Then, one day, I had to fire a different employee who was also black. The first guy asked me if I was going to "fire all the brothers". It was funny. Then I said, "No, but I figured I better fire at least one, just to keep the ratio down. Problem is, you all look the same and I'm not sure who I fired." He laughed. I laughed. We both knew neither one of us meant anything by it. Humor is an important part of dealing with the dark side of life.

Race jokes are always the best. I grow up around mexicans in south Florida and one thing I can say is this is accurate. We use to do this all the time, literally everyday but we love each other. Good times

I love seeing the audience CRYING with laughter......! A friend of mine played me the recording of this quite a few years ago. One of the funniest stories ever told, and a sign of true friendship among men.

Comedians are usually one of the best resources to learn about different cultures because they are uncensored and honest about their own. Media tends to hold a bias over certain cultures, which can lead to inaccuracies.

I’m half Indian, so my black buddy once used a red sharpie and put a dot on my forehead when I was sleeping. I laughed my ass off. A few days ago it’d was his birthday . In the 1980s, I was at a catered, corporate reception. One of the corporation's vice presidents was a distinguished, 50ish black man. As he approached the buffet table, he looked around the room and said that if anyone laughed, they'd be fired. Then he grabbed a fork and took a bunch of slices of watermelon. Of course, EVERYONE laughed. No one was fired AND no one got offended. Miss those days.

It's an American culture thing, has to do with stereotypes that you might not be familiar with. It's like getting a Chinese person one of those hats you see in costumes, chopsticks, a cat or dog, etc. Hope that makes it clearer for you

I was just watching a Cesar Milan video yesterday where he was training a woman on how to come into the house without getting her dogs excited to the point they were jumping all over her (because she was pregnant). They're practicing at a fence gate and he tells her to try again with more confidence because she was coming in kind of weakly, expecting the dogs to jump on her or try to get out. And he said, "You are squeezing through that little gap in the gate like me when I came across the border." The funniest thing was the woman and her husband didn't really seem to catch on to what he said.
