Through The Scope - The Malcolm 8X Vintage Sniper

Howdy everyone! Today we're looking through the scope on a Malcolm 8X USMC - the Unertl or Lyman style scope you'll often find at CMP Vintage Sniper competitions.
Due to the camera alignment on these old scopes, the outside of the sight picture to be a little distorted. As it turns out, camera lenses and Mk. I Eyeball lenses aren't quite the same. I tried to line it up as best I could, but the edges of the glass don't line up.
00:00 Introduction
This scope has a very straightforward use and reticle.
The reticle is a plain crosshair. The parallax it set by removing the sunshade and then turning the parallax ring. This pushes the objective lens housing outward when adjusting for closer distances (clockwise). If you're spinning the dial counterclockwise, you'll have to manually push the end element back into the scope.
For the first length of this video, I have the parallax set at 25 yards.
02:05 100 Yards
Looking across some 20" and 10" lollipop targets. They're pretty easy to see with this 8X (fixed magnification) scope!
04:14 200 Yards
A quick run through targets from 200 to 25 yards. I change the parallax from 100 to 200 yards, then from 200 down to 25. After peeking back at the 25 yard target, it's back to the 200 yard 20" and 100 yard 10".
05:12 300-500 yards
A quick adjustment of the parallax and the 300 yard target is brought into sharp focus. 24" and 10" targets. Then a 40" target at 500 yards (8 MOA)
05:58 650+ yards
Targets out to 650 yards are quite visible, but you may have difficulty hitting targets 5" across at 650.
30", 20", 10", 5". Then it's back to 25 yards and a run through the parallax until the paper targets are in focus.

Yep, classic crosshair of the Malcom scope, I actually got to shoot one of these in the early '80s with a certain marine sniper we all called pappy..

You could certainly use it for hunting! And, anecdotally, that's exactly what soldiers in the field did when they had the opportunity. As for mounting on the Krag... that'd be a tough setup. Due to the shape of the receiver, there's really not much real estate to work with back near the bolt. Historically, scopes on the Krag were mounted offset, attached to the left side of the mid/upper receiver. An 8X scope mounted offset would be terribly unbalanced.

@@HiLuxInc on that note, if I buy the Malcom rim fire rifle scope bases, they would be compatible with this scope as with others, right?
