Through the Eyes of an Engineer | Grady Hillhouse | TEDxTAMU

Learn how to find excitement in our everyday surroundings, and how large problems can be solved with just a little curiosity.
Grady Hillhouse is a civil engineer and science communicator widely known for his educational video series Practical Engineering, currently one of the largest engineering channels on KZread with over 2 million subscribers and millions of views each month. His videos focus on infrastructure and the human-made world around us, helping people make a connection between themselves and their constructed environment. The Practical Engineering channel has garnered media attention from around the world and been featured on the Discovery Channel, Science Channel, Make Magazine, Gizmodo, and many others. Hillhouse graduated from Texas A&M in 2012 with a master’s degree in civil engineering. Before stepping into full-time video production, he spent nine years as a private consultant working on a wide variety of infrastructure projects with a focus on dams and hydraulic structures. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I have watched many of his videos on KZread and I find them to be very interesting. People tend to take technology and infrastructure for granted until something goes wrong. Being what is referred to as a maintenance fitter in Australia I can honestly say preventative maintenance is always better than a critical incident such as a machine breakdown. 😎🇦🇺

We neglect our inpection duties at a cost - inspectors sometimes are undertrained - lax - overworked - utilized inefficiently - underpaid or just mail it in, aka "pencil whip" the work order - any of these - but we do have a designated position for this, and this goes beyond civil engineering inspections, electrical, fire & elevator inspectors are a few more that most that iv'e met in the newly built construction trade are serious, but some in residential are hacks. Homes should be checked for Radon during home purchasing inspections but most buyers do not buy this service inspection because of cost. Radon causes cancer.
