Thrilling Cape Town Street Photography Gone Wrong! (pov Fail)

Attempted a POV streetphotography session in Cape Town. It failed, but I learned a lot, and got a good perspective of privilege.

WHO AM I
🙋🏼‍♂️ I´m Daniel Bryn, a KZreadr, adventurer, photographer and ex engineer from Oslo, Norway. I lost my job as an engineer in 2016. Lucky me I guess! Saw that as an oportunity to trod up my own path in the world. That led to making videos, some freelance photography, building passive income etc. It has all been, and still is, in the pursuit of living the best life I can live on my terms with passive income building my own thing. With my girlfriend! Yey!

I kinda know the feeling you got there.. where i live it's safe but you still have to have self awareness and not go in the dodgy spots in the city.. Sorry to hear what happened 😔 I kinda when through a scene like that and just kills the mood. I know the feeling of doing street photography in peace and out of harms way

Yep - well, just a reminder of the privilege I guess. I love visiting odd places to do photography, but weird to try and be happy go lucky with so much hardships on the streets…

    Why is Capetown so dangerous?

I’m not a local, but I suspect high levels of poverty, compounded by a history of racial discrimination. I found a 2012 article quoting “More than 36 percent of city households earn less than R3500 a month.” Adjusted for inflation, R3500 in 2012 would be R6250 in 2023, which is $335 in US dollars. Even for employed people, the current national minimum wage is $1.37 per hour (that’s $2k/year at 40hours per week for 50 weeks). So walking around with $2k or $3k of camera gear probably makes you a good target for mugging, especially by the poorest. Dunno how frequent muggings actually are, but at the very least the maths look like it would be risky.

@@fvsch this exactly. Ive found the history of SA has the most to do with it tbh. Ive been to some odd places where people are worse off, but take better care of ome another and met me with a more curious and friendly attitude. Lusaka is the current location and a completely different vibe and people alltogether
