THRIFT FLIP men's blazer to women's oversize blazer | sew with me!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hello my pretties! In today's video I am turning a men's blazer into a women's oversize blazer. I hope this video will be helpful if you are planning to convert a men's blazer into a women's blazer and still have that oversize look!
Having the men's blazer to start from is also great as you are working with longer sleeves and wider shoulders to start off with, which gives more allowance when taking in. I have always found women's blazers to be too short and too snug in these areas!
For this thrift flip, I decided to bring in the width of the sleeves, take in the shoulders (and take OUT the shoulder pads hehe), and then bring in the side of the blazer. I also wanted the lining to look just as pretty as the outside.
I am calling this a thrift flip, even though I technically didn't get this at a thrift store - it is actually my Dad's old blazer! I didn't know what else to call it though and it's basically the same idea as a thrift flip, except I got it from the back of my cupboard.
I am super happy with how this project turned out and can't wait to start styling it, especially in some dark academia outfits!

Most people wouldn't even try to take that blazer apart. Great job.

Thank you so much! I'm quite surprised myself that it turned out so well lol
I found men's blazer generally has better quality both on materials and workmanship, you can find a lot of such at second hand market. The only challenge is to resize them! I found the shoulder and sleeves are the most challenging part to deal with... also the lining part. You did a great job!

The quality makes them hard to take apart sometimes though. The one I'm currently altering is so nicely sewn together!
I like your idea and it is great to be sustainable like this. As a formal menswear enthousiast and experienced tailor, I can advise any women looking to thrift mens blazers on the following: It's very doable to slim the waist down, easy to shorten sleeves (although you probably like the long sleeves to roll them up for a casual look), also easy to slim down the sleeves. Be warned about shoulders! Because shoulders are very difficult if not impossible to adjust, maybe only by maximum of 1cm, otherwise the sleeves will not fit properly to the jacket body. So what I'm saying is, make sure you like the shoulders how they are, because they will not change! Happy hunting.
Great content! You just showed me how to solve the biggest issue I have had with thrifted men's blazers. Now I feel confident sizing down the shoulders and sleeves. Yasssssssssssss! 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😍😍😍😍😍
Altering my grandma‘s oversized blazer is one of the projects I want to do! Thanks for the video! Great job 🎉
It turned out great! When I was in high school I loved altering thrifted clothes, I stopped in college because I didn't have the time nor the space and tools but I may start doing it again. Love this videos.

Thank you Grace! You should totally start altering thrifted pieces again! It's so rewarding when it works out 😄I tend to go through phases where I thrift & alter quite a few things, get overwhelmed and tell myself I'm never doing it again, and then a few months later go back to it lol

@@FabSakker hahaha I totally remember feeling so overwhelmed sometimes. It's really rewarding, but the fear and pressure of not knowing if you're going to ruin the piece is too high sometimes. Oh yeah, good times 😂 Still, I'll do it again when the sewing machine gets repaired 🤞🏼
Thank you so so much for this! I have thrifted a beautiful dark green wool coat which is huge, so this walk through was so helpful. Most takeing in jobs on YT are just a s all size difference, but I really need to take in quite a bit. Thank you!

Ooh yay I'm so glad it was helpful Rachel! That dark green wool coat sounds amazing... I'm a bit jealous of your thrift find haha! Good luck taking it in, I'm sure it will turn out really well xx
Fantastic job!!!! I'm so inspired to try this. I'll try first with a blazer I hardly like, in case I mess up.
You did amazing! Even some “top tailors” will scare you away from doing this. I think that’s a bunch of baloney and you just proved them wrong!
Just bought a gorgeous men’s tweed blazer. Thank You!

Thank you so much for this video! I got a ton of my dads old sets with matching blazers, vests and ties I’ve been wanting to fit to myself but I’ve been so scared to touch them haha
I accidentally thrifted 2 blazers that r literally men's blazer (they advertised it as women's) and now im stuck with it. Seeing ur video makes me wanna try to resize it!!
Thank you, this is really helpful. I've been into coats/blazers these days, I really love how they look in my outfits.

this is COOL would be even cooler if you tightened the waist up with darts, and if you added ruffles and puff to the sleeve shoulder join as you had so much material to work with
Very wonderful, you should do more like these

It's hard to find women's jackets with anything like the quality of fabric, serious style, detail, and construction that men get. I love them. Right now I have my first cut-down project from an op shopped men's jacket, which I chose for it's breathtaking quality fabric: Harris Tweed. I could not leave the shop without it.
I just found a nice lightweight union made blazer but the shoulder is too wide for my liking and I'm afraid to do it myself coz it's just soo good to make a mistake.
Watching your vid coz i bought the wrong size of coat i hope i can fix it
May I ask about how you ensured the arm still fit after taking fabric off the shoulder? All I really want to do is take fabric off the shoulder for mine, but I figure that will make the armhole bigger so I'll need to take in the sides of the blazer to make up for that. Did you calculate how much you'd need to take in the sides after doing the shoulders to make sure the armhole circumference matched the sleeves?
What a great job! I need to take in an oversized jacket in the same style but, i have been to intimidated to try it. After watching your video, i will try it tonight! I got it for 14.00 on sale so what do I have to lose?! Thanks girl.

also how did you do the lining of the sleeve?
As a poncho. No shoulder pat
Could’ve cut it in half to make it a short blazer and a skirt😉
i thought this video was great! i was just wondering how you managed to sew the lining back together??

No shame in taking it to a tailor if you think it's beyond you! I literally did that last week with a shirt I knew would be way too hard for me to do myself at home!
My blazer has too many layers of clothing and my sewing machine is not working on it😭😭😭 my shoulder is detaching what to do!!?
@TriggaTreDay

Most tailors do a lot of their sewing by hand. Do look up some proper hand sewing techniques and you should be fine. Don’t get discouraged, you will figure it out!
@this_mundane_life

@@TriggaTreDay i tried sewing it by hand but my largest needle which I use for making garlands/ for binding books also got bent out of shape. I don't think hand sewing can work on blazers with shoulder pads. the blazer is now lying in a corner since then and my mother has asked me to never touch any piece of clothing for upcycling :(
@TriggaTreDay
2 жыл бұрын
@@this_mundane_life ok, so I’m going to encourage you to try again, because I know you can get it done. I have successfully hand sewn plenty of things that had super thick layers of fabric. If it was sewn before it can be sewn again ok…! Outside of the shoulder pads, what type of material is the blazer made from? For certain types of material you will need different tools. Is it some form of leather? How were you using your needle that caused it to bend?
@this_mundane_life
2 жыл бұрын
@@TriggaTreDay I really don't know much about the fabric except that it is not leather. There are multiple layers so when I tried hand sewing the needle bent out of shape. Maybe I need a much bigger needle?

Great video, except this style isn’t Dark Academia it’s just Academia. dark Academia is actually more of a goth style
Mauvaise méthode. Dommage la veste est de qualité.
but… the question remains: is your dad a professor?!
i also love the oversized blazer look & often times struggle with whether to remove or keep the giant shoulder pads that usually come with thrifted blazers - how do you know if removing shoulder pads would destroy the overall look of the blazer? and have you had any experience replacing big/fat shoulder pads with smaller/thinner ones?
but… the question remains: is your dad a professor?!
