Tips on saving tomato seeds from homegrown fruit including the types of tomato plants to avoid saving seeds from and three different methods you can use for saving tomato seeds. One method is extremely simple, the second takes three days, and the last method -- completely new to me -- takes one day and leaves you with clean seeds to store in seed packets or other containers.

I saved seeds from an F1 hybrid of cherry tomatoes last year and yes, the fruit is totally different - much bigger and tastes amazing. Also it's the only tomato plant (only one survived from that lot but that's my fault) that produced decent crop. The rest didn't do well this year. I saved the seeds from that plant again (fermentation method) and am looking forward to seeing what's going to happen next year.

Fun experiment but by saving seeds from hybrids you'll not always get a good result. You were lucky this time :)

@@Lovelygreens yes I was, and it was exactly that - an experiment. That's part of the fun when it comes to gardening. I'm also experimenting with growing avocados in my polytunnel. It probably won't happen but I'm enjoying seeing the plants grow.

I just found you by watching a video on Permaculture Magazine. I want to thank you for your video and the message I left you on that video. No snakes? Rattlesnakes will be curled up and not rattling this morning in the garden. Walk softly. I am an Irishman trying to grow in the chemical waste land called Kansas. Where chemical farmers are destroying everything. Including the topsoil. I have to pay a lady friend of mine to make soap :-) I was glued on you from the minute your video started. Absolutely love your garden. My fourth year with living soil and very interested in food forest. I have 100 foot row that is basically that. So excited to find your channel :-) They must put all the angels on Islands😊

I just wash the seeds until all the gel protecting the seeds is gone. I then dry them for a couple of days and then store them in envelopes.

Excellent video. Thanks. I have a question.... Do Gardener's Delight and Moneymaker need 'flower bagging' or are the flowers capsulated?

  • @Lovelygreens

Hi Dave -- I've not grown Moneymaker in a long time (not as keen on the flavor) but think that both are capsulated. Best check though before saving seeds!

Hi Tanya, I know that this is off topic a little, but did you ever make a video on how you made the arbor at your other house?
