Three Types of Friction Problems in Statics

Here we explore three types of Friction Problems that may be encountered in a statics class:
Type 1 Problems are in static equilibrium and don't use the friction formula at all.
Type 2 Problems have impending motion at all surfaces, and make the assumption that f=(mu)(N) at all surfaces with impending motion
Type 3 Problems have impending motion at some surfaces but not others. Here you need to assume f=(mu)(N) at all surfaces with impending motion and then check f≤(mu)(N) everywhere else.

if three boxes were used, how do i check if the sliding occurs at the bottom of the third box?

You'd use the same method: Draw a FBD of each box, being sure to label the frictional forces as equal and opposite from box to box. Then write the equilibrium equations for each box, and check that frictional forces are all less than or equal to mu_s*N

first, thanks for the reply! video helped a lot. So is it okay to say that the box that slides is the box with the least Frictional force?

If the problem asks for the maximum force prior to sliding, wouldn't it still be static? The box isn't sliding yet but the tiniest amount of extra force onto the force the problem is asking us to find, would cause motion. But since the problem is asking for the maximum force prior to sliding, wouldn't we be using the coefficient for static friction and not kinetic friction like it was shown in the video?

Hello, do we need to consider tipping in this question too? Or is that professor based if he wants us to consider it or not.

Great video. Some criticism I will offer is to be much more clear and organized with your drawings. At times, I have no idea what you are writing because it is illegible. Other channels provide the same clear explanations you do, but with better drawings. They keep colors consistent, number clear, etc... otherwise great video.

If we apply force on green block at shown the figure at 8:59 then the friction will be of the green box is in left direction and the friction of green block will be a force of blue box and as this if the force act on blue box left in direction then the friction of blue box will be right 🙃

I think most of us agree we'd all be better off if America switched to metric... except temperature. I've heard convincing arguments that Fahrenheit is a superior unit for temperature in everyday life. Anyhow, I don't have power to control any of that, so I'll keep making videos using Metric and Imperial units.
