Three More Upgrades on my Ozark Trail G.1 Explorer- Less IS More Healthy 198

I discuss 3 more upgrades I've made to my G.1 Explorer.
some links to some parts: Affiliate through Amazon:
29 MTB Wheel Set: amzn.to/3VKLq1c
Rear Cassette 12 sp: amzn.to/3VWkRHH
New Brake Pads: amzn.to/4chkHk5
TPU tubes in tires: amzn.to/3W1Dk5U
YBN 10sp chain: amzn.to/4clcH1e
New brake Rotor: amzn.to/3VJUm6T
New Seat cheap: amzn.to/3L3AdnA
Carbon seat post: amzn.to/3XCLXFb (you WILL need fiber paste to use this.)
Satori Firebird Bar: amzn.to/3VI4Fsr
Meroca Suspension Stem: amzn.to/3L8qV9H
Nonaffiliate links to AliExpress that I could not find on amazon:
L-Twoo 12s set www.aliexpress.us/item/325680...
meroca suspension stem: www.aliexpress.us/item/325680...
Thus far I'm about $550 in on various items added to the bike, double what I paid for the bike. I'm not counting stuff like the rack, bags or lights that I already owned. I had a lot of this stuff on hand already for various ongoing projects. The wheels, stem, cassette, and drivetrain seat and seat post were the things I purchased specifically for this project.
I plan to upgrade the cranks and BB as well as the front fork. I will probably also upgrade to a touring seat made for women by Terry. I obviously need new bar tape.
Affiliate links for incidental items I generally carry with me and are on the bike:
pair of water bottles: amzn.to/3zkcBsp
rear brake light smartish: amzn.to/3XFgMJa
front bag: amzn.to/3L565s1
Feed bag: amzn.to/3VE1Qsl
rockbros kids feedbag, remove cartoon face: amzn.to/4eE4Ld7
I bought a 3rd pair of Antora 2s. They fit me so well and feel really good.
This is a referral code- you get $20 off and I get $20 off. Anyone can get this code from Merrell, they offer it to anyone who orders from their website. refer.merrell.com/leslie.herger

I’ve never regretted money sunk into saddles. Finding the right one is super subjective, can vary with the bike it’s used on, and be hit and miss. It’s definitely a project!

I'm with you. The other saddle I bought, a Serfas women's saddle, is great for a commuter bike, really really comfortable but it's not great over 20 miles. I won't regret the saddle I'm planning to order, a Terry touring saddle, but it's a big hit to the wallet!

Sick bike! In my experience with saddles, it can sometimes be surprising which ones are actually comfortable. My favorite saddle right now is an old, all plastic one I took off of a cheap yard sale bike. I would recommend checking out a local bike shop and seeing if they'll let you try a few saddles before spending money, or maybe a bike co-op if there's one near you

I've got a couple of local shops I know and trust. I've been planning to head into one of them to test out a couple of saddles. That said I adjusted the velmia forward a bit, and it's been really good since then. Still too long but very comfortable.

@@LessISMoreHealthy That's another thing I've noticed. It seems like pushing the saddle forward and tilting the nose upward can put your sit bones more toward the wider part in the rear, rather than making you slide onto the nose. My most comfortable bike looks like it would really hurt to sit on.

Looks good! It takes a while to see how each upgrade performs. I do a little at a time too. I like the handle bar choice. It always seems there is not enough room for accessories and hand positions. Thanks for sharing!

I have grown to really love it. I think I'd like the redshift KS, but I wonder if it comes narrow enough. I gotta look into it. I know they have one with a bit of a rise, and I think I'd like this even more with a bit more of a rise. It's a solid bar with just the right amount of flair for me.

awesome, great job. I do my upgrade incrementally too. It's easy to get overboard in one shot. I have learned that there is gonna be trial, test and see what works. I always gauge my upgrades based on my needs. That is the best thing you can do. One new product that I'm doing a test is suspension seat post for gravel bikes. I love it. highly recommended. thank you and keep up the great stuff!

It's like you are seeing in my brain. I was just researching that exact saddle. It's rated well for women. Though I have to say, I just did another 30 miles on this cheap ass velmia and it's actually okay in longer miles now that I've moved it forward. Also the logo is quickly wearing off. It is still way too long for me.

    @LessISMoreHealthy

It's a great starter bike for sure, especially if you want to learn how to maintain and upgrade. The frame is solid and can handle a lot. I'm doing mostly smooth gravel and some green trails with minimal technical stuff and it's great. Keep an eye on your walmarts! One will pop up eventually. Also FB market place, some people have posted that they've seen these for around $100 on there. The 3 walmarts in a short ride had the small and medium in stock for a VERY short period of time. They've been out of stock for ages now. And there are NONE on the sales floor ever.

I put 2 water bottles into the frame bag. The pannier has stuff for making coffee and camera and art supplies. The front bag has batteries for my osmo action, my glasses, sun block, and keys. I try not to have anything on my body since it stresses my back out. The feed bags have my phone with gps directions and the other is the water bottle I'm using. The pannier is pretty lightweight the water is the heaviest thing. Sometimes I have a camp chair strapped on there. But lately I've been carrying a little thing waterproof mat for sitting on.

I disagree. When I buy another bike I'll still have all the parts on the G.1. I can swap them onto any bike where they'll fit which is a lot of the bikes out there. Further if I want to sell the g.1 or give it to my nephew, I have all the original parts, I can put them back on. The G.1 frame is sturdy and stable and I don't care if I beat it up, and I am riding it all the time, as much as I can. Upgrading anything means you can upgrade the next big thing. It is an excellent bike to learn or hone skills on and those always transfer.

Why did you put a 12 speed on your bike @ got rid of a 2by drive train. I am up grading my drive train on my g-1;gravel bike. I'll keep my 2 x drive train and install a nice climbing gear. So I'll have all the gears I need for any occasion. And guess what. All for 50 bucks. Sounds like you don't know bike's really good. That was a down grade you did, for what.
