Three Hermits. A Short Story by Leo Tolstoy

Спорт

This is a surprising tale about three hermits discovered on a remote island and what it reveals about genuine spirituality, told by the master of the genre, Leo Tolstoy.

Wow...What a wonderful story! Thankyou so much for this it is balm for one's soul. I wonder if you realise how much this is appreciated...This is God speaking, helping you to introduce the west to a world which Tolstoy inhabited and which he loved. For those interested, find the film made with Tolstoy's young sister about her life with her parents. It is marvellous, and enriches one's understanding of this truly great writer, this man of God. ☦☦

For some reason we always tend to associate talent and success with virtues and morality. The more money and talents ones possess the more we admire and justify admirations with praises, oh such a good person. Each of the qualities stand alone individual characteristics of each person. A horrible person could be quite talented and vice versa. Sainthood is beyond thought and expression. Sainthood is a life of action. I love these Tolstoy shorts probably one of my most favorite things on KZread right now. In my opinion, Tolstoy is one of history’s greatest story tellers, philosophers, and educators. I don’t know his personal life I don’t care to know it. I’m afraid to judge him. His talents were special to helping humans understand earth other on deeper levels. As far as sainthood, let us encourage each other towards the goal of living lives that honor God. Let our shortcomings show the transformative power of surrendering to the will. I have no point to make just rambling encouragements. If I have any highlights it’s let’s separate the material from the spiritual with respecting each. The human powers of the elites and Godly powers of saints. The idolatry of human spirit brings glory to the nature of the being itself. The sweet surrender of saints recognizes all glory belongs to God in miraculous ways. I can say this Tolstoy has helped me understand my neighbors, myself, and God. For this I am thankful. (Please forgive me if I spoken out of turn sharing opinions on matters that don’t really concern me.)

This is one of the most amazing short stories. It cuts right through appearance and reality, religion and the knowledge of God, and it does so with mystery and something near to horror. Don't read it if you don't want to stay up most of the night thinking.

I love this story, I heard a "version" (of this story) exactly like it, but it was an "OLD ISLAMIC, SUFI" story. About a wise and proud Sufi, trying to teach a "hermit" on a island in a large river. He tried to help the "ignorant" hermit how to pray correctly. When he had done his best he left and the hermit ran after him on the water, asking again, "what were those words". It is a WONDERFUL STORY. Did not know of this version. THANK YOU!!!

Just a story, piecing together a place and time we know - this 'place" the origin of the deep human longings? (purpose,belonging,love...) a place we all have been? And for now we're in human form, temporarily displaced until death, like a layover of sorts ( in most cases like mine more like prison sentence) lol only to keep from crying lol. Anyway, I think this story - his thoughts - and other "stories" attempting to explain life are fragmented memories of a past experience we may have had and they are pieces of a puzzle a memory..... you get my drift...I promise to try to be kind, love others and myself - to find peace and joy in what I have, to be my best, and trust my intuition BEST REGARDS TO YOU ALL!

Just like not saying a divine name in vain, which literally means secularly, no vain repetitions doesn't mean to not become adept in or perform ritual prayer, but to not treat it as something you just have to go through to placate the spiritual worlds. It is important to worship as revealed and inspired, but we need to do as we can and make it personal.

If we were not in utter desperation and helplessness to fix our mess, God would not have had to come Himself to fix it. Where there are sinners there is sin as where there are the sick there is disease and injury. Are you not sick as the rest of us? Closely examine your life and tell yourself honestly if you really are or not? Christianity is about Christ, not Christians themselves. We expect we shall fail and falter and like the Lord Christianity is abused and misunderstood by many. Such is the way of we who grope in the dark, until we find the Light of Lights.

@@mattropolis99 Politicians, absolutely!! Lots of hypocrisy in the religious salesmen that are on every corner. And don’t forget the televangelist! Talk about greedy con artists!! Christian merchandising is big business. Your bibles have been edited to fit the agendas of kings, popes and scribes and are so poorly translated that they are to the point of contradictory gobbledygook. What is actually as rare as hen’s teeth are real spiritual teachers.

@@dsiepiela6449 And what exactly do you mean by that? How do you actually know God does not fix anything or prevent evils? God is not going to prevent or stop all the consequences of our actions because, we have free will and if our choices are to mean anything, they must have the dignity of affecting the world. God madevus stewards of the Earth and it is our own actions that cause the majority of our problems Another aspect is that God cares about our eternal fate, as that will last forever and anything in this life besides is liminal and so passing. That is not to say it does not matter, but it is secondary by a long way to our final state. God has also tasked us with being the light and salt of the earth. We need to do all we can to improve the lives of our fellow human beings out of sacrifical love for one another and so die to ourselves, become one and imitate Christ Who.in dying made eternal life in beatitude in participation of the Divine Life of God in Christ Human being's evil actions are the problem and so it makes sense for God to work through humanity to fix humanity's problems.

The hermits don't remember the "correct" prayer and yet they seem to have super Jesus powers. Aka, the words are not important. The bishop was arrogant, believing he knew God better than the hermits because of his fancy bishop hat.
