    I liked the example of breaking up and isolating the columns. Explaning it in a vacuum helped me understand how it works in real situations. Using a theoretical board started to break my brain

    A very good explanation of zugzwang control. I really like the generalizations you made regarding zugzwang controlling threats. It's very nice when trying new board types. Great video!

    Thanks ^v^ I don't really care so much whether the game is solved or not, as long as it has complicated emergent behavior. Solved or not, there is so much that we still don't understand about connect 4. Just knowing who wins in any arbitrary position doesn't mean we actually have a sense of... - The structure of the game tree - The essence of the opening - Any sort of formal understanding of line transpositions, and isomorphisms between different situations - Generalizations to larger board sizes I've got at least somewhat satisfying answers for a number of these questions, which I hope to present and refine over the following videos. Let's say you sat down, and memorized the colors for every x,y coordinate in inches of the Mona Lisa. Have you seen its beauty? Not in the least. This is the equivalent of brute-force solving a board game. Knowledge and understanding are two different things. Revealing the structure of the emergent patterns of this formal system in particular is my goal, and beyond that I hope to continue by showing how these emergent behaviors are of the same form as those of music, reality, math, and all other complex emergent systems. In due time...

    @@twoswap that's a really beautiful motivation, one I share. Emergent strategy is such an interesting topic, if you have any other good resources on it I'd love to see. Other than that, any plans on doing things with the king of emergent strategy, Go? I imagine it might be a bit more difficult sadly.

    @@shminge7779 i am gonna make some go videos and hex videos sooner or later :) Ive thought about trying to formalize more complex group statuses (beyond just life death seki and ko, you can have double and triple and n-uple kos, ten thousand year kos, and all sorts of other stuff.) Quite curious how these life statuses can be taxonomized but I have yet to work it out on paper. I imagine there is some hierarchical structure they obey... Im 4kyu on ogs if you want to play some time, name is also 2swap

    The layers of abstraction here get crazy. I was halfway through when I remembered that the threats aren't actual pieces and this board was essentially the negative-space of the actual board

    I think it could be interesting to consider a variant of the game where players are allowed to pass rather than being forced to play (if both players pass 3 times in a row without a break in between, it's a tie).

    @@twoswap certainly one could still win by creating threat pairs at the very least, and passing can give the opponent a chance to build stuff up for their end goal; it would at least require a change in strategy I reckon

    Any plans to do a from scratch analysis of a strategy game? I think it'd be really interesting to see your thought process throughout, and definitely educational as to what to look for as well. If you ever do, I've got some games that's I've almost completely analyzed if you need examples :)

    The notation with just the Zs, 0s, and #s, in the columns, seems like it should maybe be sort of a recurring pattern in the analysis of a variety of other games. It seems like it could be like, a family of games that should have a name, like nim, or hackenbush.

  • @twoswap

    @twoswap

    10 ай бұрын

    Yeah, it definitely feels nim-ish! Worth checking out the sprage-grundy theorem if you don't know it. It states that you can reduce a certain class of games to nim. Unfortunately, this endgame mechanic isn't one of them (at least at first glance, without further reduction) since there is an asymmetry in that each player can only pop the letters of their own color from the bottom. The theorem disallows this sort of asymmetry.
