Thread Tapping in Acrylic Perspex Plexiglass Lucite using a drill driver

Ғылым және технология

An easy way to tap a thread in acrylic, perspex, plexiglass, lucite. Using these drill/driver tapping bits and a squirt of WD40 you can tap threads in acrylic very easily. Here's how...

Incredibly timely for me, thank you for the time and effort in sharing this Alex.

Thanks for sharing, Alex! I discovered another video recently where the chap used a spiral point tap (otherwise known as a gun nose tap) as opposed to the spiral flute tap you used. It pushes the swarf out ahead of it, so really better for through holes (such as the ones you did). I tried it out, and it really works wonders! So mu better than the standard 4-flute tap, which leaves "crunchies" inside the hole and leaves a very rough thread. Try one, and you will not be disappointed! They are also much stronger, so can be used in steel without fear of breaking. Cheers!

Hi, do you have any tips for drilling into lucite wall-mount bannisters? I got these beautiful bannisters however they are not drilled. They are 2 inch diameter and have decorative air bubbles throughout. How do you suggest keeping the bannisters still while drilling?

These taps were specially designed for aluminium sheets. Of course they will brake in use with the harder metals. I found they will work with copper too, but not with the brass / bronze / steel. They are okay for acrylic but definitely not the best. From my experience regular straight shaft tap works best for acrylic

Those bits look nice, but I've tapped many, many holes in acrylic and with just regular taper tap bits in a drill chuck. Mostly between M3 and 1/4"-20. Happy tapping!

Do you think the threads in acrylic will last long if you screw and unscrew often with a metal screw in it? thanks!

Was waiting for the test of them drilling and tapping in one go, rather than tapping pre drilled holes. Any chance?

In aluminium you have to drill at high speed then switch to low speed to tap. If you are doing a lot of holes it is quicker and easier to use standard drills and taps. In acrylic use tallow not wd40 as a lubricant, the swarf sticks in the flutes of the taps leaving a clean hole but the flutes need to be cleared after each hole.

Nice vid! I suppose the all-in-one thread/drill bit work, but I'd rather use better quality bits ... sure they are certainly more costly, but they should last a lifetime- not too sure about the Chinesium alloy used in the all-in-one.

I was curious about these, but now I've had a successful tapping experience I'm encouraged to buy a "proper" tap and die set and try tapping other things. It's been something I've wanted to do for a long time, but never really had the need.

The convenience of drilling, tapping and chamfering all in one is very tempting. Especially considering my fondness for flathead bolts. I think I will stick with my expensive taps and dies since I do tap steel also. Trying not to brag to much but I have tapped 3/8”-16 threads into a steel block 3/4” thick by HAND! The thick steel was for a heavy sculpture base.

but no one has issues with tapping through a thin piece of acrylic even with regular taps. the problem is when you try to tap through the side of a 1/2-inch plexiglass without going all the way through. then that son of a gun cracks everywhere...

frankly every single tap u made is junk...its all chipped off, its not tight seal, completely useless, you might as well kept them as holes
