THRE Connectors Webinar: Human Rights Budgeting with Lydia Murphy (Poverty Alliance)

With Scotland moving toward further embracing human rights in legislation and practice, such as the burgeoning Scottish Bill of Human Rights, it is important to move our focus to how we support this work.
THRE champions a human rights and equalities first approach- funding is a crucial aspect of this. Human rights budgeting ensures that people are at the centre of funding decisions. It recognises that to fulfill human rights, you must adequately fund the organisations, projects, and frameworks that support them.
Government budgets are crucial for the third sector. We know that, with the Scottish Budget recently released, funding is on the minds of community and voluntary groups across Scotland. Voluntary organisations and community groups in Scotland are part of the framework that helps respect, protect, and fulfill human rights- so they must be funded as such.
For this Connectors Webinar, we have chosen to focus on those everyday rights that are so crucial to us as individuals, but also the work of the third sector- the Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights that human rights budgeting must support.
Our Guest speaker is Lydia Murphy, a Development Officer with The Poverty Alliance's Rights in Action project. Lydia talks us through ICESCR, the Scottish Human Rights Bill, Progressive taxation, and how this bill will look at a local and national level.
THRE’s Connectors events are an opportunity to network, hear updates from the project, and hear from a range of guest speakers on emerging issues in human rights and equalities.
About THRE's Connectors Network
THRE's Connectors are the link between THRE and their organisation and help THRE to connect with their organisation and to the people and organisations they work with. They are interested in the issues, ideas and conversations around human rights and equalities, and are keen to help more third-sector organisations know about and start to take a human rights and equalities first approach.
About THRE
THRE (Third Sector Human Rights and Equalities) is a partnership of GCVS, EVOC and HTSI. It’s a nationwide project with funding from the Scottish Government Equality and Human Rights Fund to allow us to develop and deliver resources, training and networks to support third-sector organisations towards taking a human rights and equalities first approach to their organisational development and delivery.
